Man United fans keep fighting Glazer takeover
Sat May 14, 2005 10:18 AM ET

By Tim Castle
LONDON (Reuters) - Die-hard supporters of Manchester United pledged Saturday to keep fighting a takeover by U.S. billionaire Malcolm Glazer as he edged nearer to gaining full control of the world-famous English soccer club.

The owner of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers American football team only needs to buy a few thousand more shares when markets open Monday to reach the 75 percent stake level needed to delist the 127-year old club from the stock market and make it private.

Glazer's son Joel tried to appease disgruntled United fans Friday by insisting that the family were long-term investors and avid supporters of the club.

But his appeal fell on deaf ears as supporters planned on Saturday how to demonstrate against Glazer at United's last Premier League match of the season at Southampton Sunday.

Fans writing on one of the largest United supporter Web sites, Red Issue, called for protests at the match ranging from singing anti-Glazer chants to a mass walkout.

Supporters say Glazer has no knowledge of soccer and plans to cream the profits off the club to pay back the debts used to buy it.

Fans pressure group Shareholders United, which says it speaks for around 2 percent of the club's shares, called for a boycott of club merchandise.

"A third of the revenues that come into the club come from merchandising. We think we can make a big dent in these revenue streams," the group's vice-chairman Sean Bones said.

PRODUCT PROTEST

The group wants fans to also boycott products sold by the club's sponsors, who include Vodafone, Nike, Budweiser and Audi.

"This will lower the value of the sponsorship of United, which will put a further dent in Glazer's profit and loss account," added.

Analysts say around 10 to 15 percent of the club's shares are held by individual supporters.

Glazer raised his stake in the club to 74.81 percent on Friday and confirmed that his 790 million pound ($1.47 billion) bid would include piling 265 million pounds of debt onto United's books.

Under the takeover terms, Glazer will offer to buy the shares in United that he does not already own for 300 pence a share.

The club's acerbic and long-standing manager, Alex Ferguson, has said he will "wait and see what is going to happen," with media reports saying the Glazers want him to stay.

The Glazers have promised to work with "current management, players and fans to ensure Manchester United continues to develop and achieve even greater success."

The team are finishing their second disappointing season in a row in third place after dominating the Premier League for a decade although they could still win a trophy when they meet Arsenal in the FA Cup final on May 21. ($1=.5388 Pound)

GLAZER TO BRING BECKHAM BACK TO UNITED?
Sunday, May 14, 2005

Rumours are said that Malcolm Glazer is prepared to bankroll a dramatic bid to bring David Beckham back to Old Trafford.

The American tycoon will give Sir Alex Ferguson the final say, but The SP understands the Glazer camp is keen for the England skipper to join the new Old Trafford regime.

And the idea might be tempting for Becks, who is trying to raise his own personal profile in the United States.

Glazer, of course, will be desperate to promote United in his own Amercian market.

And he knows Beckham is the only footballer to warrant a mention in the US media.

Fergie would not entertain the idea of re-signing Becks if he thought it was just a marketing gimmick.

But the England captain, who turned 30 last week, has been in sparkling form recently.

v And privately, Fergie has told friends that there are no hard feelings between him and Beckham - despite the saga of the flying boot and the player's departure for Spain. Indeed, Beckham has recently paid tribute to Fergie's role in his career.

Beckham has two years left on his Real Madrid contract and wants talks with the club's board at the end of the season.

He has hinted that he wants a two-year extension, but I understand Real will not give him a new deal.

It is thought Beckham wants a bigger slice of the commercial income he generates for the club.

The Beckhams are said to be house-hunting in Madrid, but the chance to return to Manchester could be very attractive.

Beckham has opened up a soccer academy in London, going into partnership with American entertainment giants AEG.

And they are thought to have plans to expand into America.

Ferguson has Cristiano Ronaldo in Beckham's old position, but he knows there is increasing Bernabeu interest in the Portuguese winger.

Glazer's people will launch a charm offensive with Fergie over the coming weeks and promise him funds to strengthen his squad.

But they will not railroad him into buying players he does not think can improve his team.

I would love it if they brought Becks back to ManU. Since he's been with Real Madrid, I haven't been able to see him play on TV. Spanish soccer is not shown here in the US.

He is supposed to be available for one or two games in the US. *crosses fingers*. I think they'd be playing somewhere in New Jersey.

er......Ok......:loco:

It was one of our constant digs at soccer players.

If you play soccer in Texas, your considered a little bitch (I think they are good athletes. Not nearly as tough as football players, but still damn good athletes). I don't know how this translates in other states.

Of course one of our coaches beat the hell out of the soccer coach because the soccer players were on our field.

Unfortunately, I don't live near either of the places he could be playing. I would love to see him play (as well as Michael Owen). Some day maybe.
