View Full Version : A River Runs Through it...

No... not the film, my front yard. You see, we've had a bit of a wet spell around here for about the last month and a half. It's been raining nearly every day, and this morning when I looked at the totals, it was around 8.2 inches. Well, today, we got hit by a little shower that put down over an inch in, well, it's been about 3 hours, and it's still raining.

Since the ground is already saturated, and the creeks were already running near the tops of their banks, most of this water has been cascading off the mountains, and since I live in the lowest part of the area, or mouth of the canyon if you prefer, I've got a nice stream running through my front yard right now. The creek can't take any more water in the natural channel, so now instead of being 3 feet wide, it's about 60 feet wide, and it's slowly approaching my front step. Really quite a sight to behold, because the natural channel right here is a couple feet deep. I can't say I've ever seen this kinda water around 'ere before.

Now before you people from the wet climes, start rolling your eyes and scoffing about 10 inches of precip in a month and a half, I've got to point out...

I LIVE IN THE DESERT

We get between 8 and 12 inches of precip ANNUALLY. Now, it's come in a 45 day period. Don't get me wrong, we cacti do love a little water, but we just don't know what to do with this much. It's, it's... really something...

As for the desert, we're a desert in classification only. It's more correctly called the cold desert, meaning that we only get 8 - 12 inches annual precip and it snows. Not like southern Nevada or Utah. We don't have vast sand dunes or anything like that. Just sagebrush and such. In fact, everything's kinda lush and green right now, what with all the water.

My home's fine, never was in any danger really. It was just interesting to watch the water run by...
