Hey everyone, I was just curious as to what bands you guys are into right now that you think are not very well know right now. I am really into discovering new bands that dont get radio play.
Right now i'm listening to a band called Gatsby's American Dream. Thay are sooooo good. they just put out a new cd called volcano. My favorite song is called Fable, it is a song talking about the book lord of the flies, its awesome.
I am also listening to a band called Boys night out they are good, gonna be at warped tour this year.

There are two local bands from Denver - The Fray (http://www.thefray.net/) and Love45 (http://www.love45.com/) that both recently got record contracts. They get pretty good airplay here, but I doubt they're being played anywhere else in the country. :dunno: I like 'em :)

Mushroomhead is a good band, like some of thier stuff I heard on AOL radio.
Suprisingly, even though they've had 1 or 2 vids on MTV, CKY. They are still considered a local underground band around here. You ask a normal person minus the "skaters and punks." Not many know them.

My favourite band at present is a rock 'n' roll group called Tentative, which none of you will have heard of probably, they are a local group in my town which consists of my cool guitar teacher...
They have major label interest so heres hoping that one day you guys might know that name: "Tentative". :D

Bloc Party are awsome. They just released their debut album "Silent Alarm". It entered the british charts at No. 5. They are influenced by bands like The Cure, Echo & The Bunnymen and Public Image Limited; with a spoonfull of Joy Division added. Also they toured with Interpol last year. The single "Banquet" is a floorfiller.

There's a group here in NYC (Brooklyn, really) called "My Favorite," which doesn't make it easy to find them on the web. So go to Double Agent Records' website. They're kind of like Morrisey, with a female singer. Their best is Burning Hearts, which you can download for free on the Double Agent site.
Then there's Britta Philips and Dean Wareham (Night Nurse is their best song, followed by Ginger Snaps).
There's Chromeo out of Vice Records (their Needy Girl video is awesome.)
The Rapture are pretty cool, especially their song "House of Jealous Lovers."
7 Seconds of Love, which you can find on RatherGood.com.
The Velveteens, which have broken up. They're a ska band out of DC, and they still have some stuff for downloading on iuma.com.
The 5, 6, 7, 8s, which were the band in Kill Bill vol. 1. They do an awesome version of "I'm Blue," by the Ikettes, who do a pretty kick ass version on their own.
Nellie McKay's album "Get Away From Me" is frelling brilliant. She does realy eclectic jazz.
Regina Spektor does eclectic jazz, but she's a bit more serious.
M.I.A. has interesting beats. But her music is very spare. However, it grows on you. You know, like fungus.
I love Bikini Kill, but they're something of an acquired taste. "Rebel Girl" is their most accesible song, but "Suck my Left One" has a certain - as the French would say - "I don't know what."
Bloc Party rocks. Check out the Banquet video on iTunes.
Brazillian Girls are pretty cool. Of course, none of them are Brazillian, and only the lead singer is a woman.
Who can forget the Butthole Surfers?
I nearly forgot about the Cramps.
Another DC band, the DBC. They're great. Kind of alternative/electronica.
Har Mar Superstar does dirty pop songs.
I love Le Tigre's "TKO," which is a really poppy punk kind of song.
I haven't heard MC 900 Ft. Jesus in a long time, but they're fun.
Matisyahu is the coolest Raggae act I have ever seen! He's a strict Hasidic Jew. And he sings Raggae. And he lives in Brooklyn.
I love PJ Harvey. I think everyone should listen to her recent album and the previous one, Stories From the City, Stories From the Sea.
The Reverend Horton Heat.
The Scissor Sisters.
The Sleepy Jackson, especially "Good Dancers".
The Virgin Prunes came up in the world in Dublin with a little band calld U2. Of course, the Prunes are a Death/Goth band. Go figure.
Willie Bobo's "Fried Neckbones and Some Home Fries." Pure genius.
Man, I could go on, and on, and on.

Nu-Metal is comming back. Each reigon of America has seemed to produce a new musical style:
The North: Metalcore
California: New Hardcore
The South: Texas Nu-Metal (A mix of thrash and Nu-Metal) ie Damageplan, Drowning Pool, Motorgrator, Element Eighty, and 90% of local bands.
Local Texas Nu-Metal Paris Green (http://www.parisgreen.com/home.html) is on the bubble of being a big band here in Houston.

my twilight zone moment yesterday was when my dad was watching chinese tv and it was on a music channel (sort of like an asian mtv) and The Killers' "Somebody Told Me" came on with chinese subtitles! it was bizarre because I had been listening to the CD all day when we were in the car, so knowing that my dad knew who The Killers were was really weird.

most of the music i like is not that popular on a mass level in america, but thats ok. some great bands that arent as well known as others:
racermason - triphop
the rose chronicles - goth rock/pop
black tape for a blue girl - goth electronica/rpop/ambient...yeah, varied.
lovespirals downwards - ambient goth (not really sure why it gets lumped in with other goth stuff, but it was on projekt's label)
some bands that are well known critically, but not in the mass market:
his name is alive - indie pop/rock/blues - so amazing, so eclectic
cat power - pop - chan marshall is one of america's best song writers
mirah - pop - another fabulous song writer

Yeah, Cat Power has great songs, but I saw her play at the Fuck Cancer benefit last year, and, well, she should get over her stage fright. She wouldn't let them turn on the spot, if I remember correctly. And it didn't seem like she really played a set in the strictest sense. It was more like noodling and trying out stuff.
Also there were Har Mar Superstar (truly a fantastic performer, with great pop songs. When he flicked a pubic hair out into the audience, women went crazy). Then there was Chavez, who frelling rocked.
I forget if I mentioned Regina Spektor. She's pretty cool, too.
And the Scissor Sisters! I just love the Scissor Sisters.

I finally bought his CD last week (Target had it for $13.99 and you also got a second CD which is the "stripped" down studio version of all the songs). It's a great CD, and that song "Chariot"???.... well, I'm a lyricist.... and I've read the lyrics quite a few times.... and unless "Chariot" is an unusual name for a woman, then it must be a metaphor for somethin', but I can't for the life of me figure out what. :rollin: It is a great song, though.
AgentSun
05-27-2005, 10:40 AM
it is a metaphor. a chariot is akin to the white horse, you know, the knight on his white horse. if you watch the video, it matches the song perfectly. i think in the song's case, chariot is that thing that sweeps him up, that was good and perfect and brings fond memories.

agreed. the only good rapper is Will Smith. (my oppinion) the others suck
AgentSun
05-31-2005, 04:26 PM
i really like will smith because his music is based on talent, not any kind of persona he has. i mean, yes 50 cent was shot a few times...but what else has he done? i mean, if we could all be rappers we could just go survive a shooting. will smith has proven himself to be a talent without having a persona to use as a crutch. in fact, in his lyrics he denies a persona and he even describes how he hates the persona....he mentions going to a club and then the next line is about how he's not going for "that reason" he's got kids. i liked that a lot. he's very kid-friendly since he wants his kids to be able to listen to it and get the style of music without being exposed to the kind of language or perversity in modern hip-hop.
oh and i can't wait for Bad Boys III. as great as his music is, when i need my violent crime fix, i turn to a good bruckheimer flick.

Just out of curiosity, do they have a name for the genre of music that AfS, My Chemical Romance, Hawthorne Heights, and Silverstien are?
And I do reccomend Dope's American Apathy. They've ditched the nu-metal and are going back to their Industrial roots, like their first album.
The Industrial cover of NWA's "**** Da Police" still rules.

Another really cool album that is story based is y Boys night out. The album is trainwreck. Its about a guy that goes through the different stages of depression, recovery, relapse, etc its reaalllllly good.
Oh and i have no idea what the genre is called. a lot of people call it emo but its more than that, i call it screamo
Owlman
12-28-2005, 11:15 PM
Cool, I thought it was Emo.
I reccomend Cold's "A Different Kind of Pain" been waiting for this CD since "Year of The Spider" came out. Not quite as brilliant as YotS in terms of lyrics, but it matches the style of all the strongest songs off the album. No more songs forced on the band by the label like "Stupid Girl" which was the only crappy song on YotS.
