So FMD is back up again.....which I am grateful...well done whoever fixed it. :applaud:

But I am wondering why its been going down so much lately and is there anything that we can do about it? (more importantly)

A quick look at "who's Online" and there are 6 members and 173 guests, and the board has only just come back up!!

Most of these so called guests seem to be viewing "user profiles" so I am guessing its some sort of program phishing for email addys.

Also I notice on many an occasion, that there is a high number of guests viewing "Let's revel for a moment here jirls." Is the hotlinking in that thread causing a high use of the bandwidth and would changing the hotlinks to attachments improve that situation.

Or, quite simply, do we need to fund a better server?

I think the "guests" viewing user profiles are actually the members signed on in "hidden" mode.

I thought the mods had strict rules against hotlinking?

173 guests being members not signed in or signed in a hidden and all looking at user profiles.....I know we are interested in one another but THAT much?

Just had a quick troll through that thread and its hotlink city!!

Well, I think I'm me today, but this is the first time I've been able to get in for days for any length of time. I thought maybe it was my computer. I'm almost out of room and it's REALLY slow.

Apparently, the reason we keep going down is because mysql keeps getting a blip and hanging up... it's something that hopefully will be fixed..

and we do have a policy against hotlinking, unless people are hotlinking from their own accounts, like photobucket accounts..

I think thats the only thread there is a problem in. I personally havent been in there but if need be I will work on that one to clean it up a bit. UNLESS those that have posted in it can go through their posts and do it :D

I got the white screen after I'd hit the refresh button again and again and again....surprised a message didn't come up on the white screen saying..."stop already it's down!!!"

i've posted a reminder/warning that people need to go back and check their posts for hotlinks [aside from their own photobucket or photo-hosting accounts]... we'll give them some time to edit or remove links.

How about imageshack? That's what I use to host pictures.

If its a site that you upload pictures to and only you have the ability to change them, like photobucket...then thats fine....thats what those accounts are for.

The problem has been where hotlinking to other peoples sites has resulted in the owner of that site, realising that thier pictures are being used elsewhere and without authority, maliciously change them to sometimes quite disgusting photos.

I've asked this question before, but I'll ask it again cause I dont want to get "suspended" from FMD.... :D

All of the pics I have posted in that thread I have saved on my computer first. Which means I guess that they are actually loaded onto this site, which I guess is eating up storage space. Should I go back in and delete them all?

If you have "attached" an image, you can tell immediately as there is a border around the image in the post.

attached images are not a problem

IIRC isn't there a personal limit to the amount of attachements?

Jul

there's a size limit to each attachment, but I'm not sure if there's a personal limit...

imageshack, photobucket, personal websites or webpages... any of that is fine. uploading attachments is fine--and as was pointed out, attachements always show up in a box, so that's easy.

what is not fine is directly linking to an image on someone else's website. that is hotlinking, and that is what is not permitted. ;)

if anyone wants to check their posts, click on your user profile and 'view posts'. that will show everything you've posted... it's easier than wading through pages and pages of a thread.

and if you're not certain, you can PM me or jul or BC and we'll check it out and let you know. :)

if you don't own the domain or the place where you got the image from, or have not moved the image to your own web space then you are hotlinking.

as in you go [img
]http://www.notmysite.com/notmypic.jpg[/img ] when you don't control notmysite.com.
