Since I'm going to Dragon Con and Anne McCaffery and her son Todd will be attending, it brought back memories. My very first adult book was Dragonsong. Ever since I have loved and adored the Pern books and SF/F. Its quite possible if I hadn't read it I wouldn't be were I am today or even on this board.

So pop in and talk with me about the universe that is Pern!

I have all of Anne's books. The first one I ever read was DragonFlight back in the early 70's, and I have avidly watched for her books since!!! I really love the dragon series! :D

Anne was awe inspiring as she spoke about Pern at D*C in 2003 ... I was mesmerized ... and to see and hear Betty Ballentine (Ballentine Publishing) ... well it was a real treat too. If you're going, then make her workshop a must see DDD. I'm going to be there if I get to D*C - it all hinges on me getting a job.

I have all of Anne's books except her three romance novels (My mother has one of them and if you promise not to tell anyone I'll even admit to having read it). The Ship That Sang was my introduction to her work back in the 1970's. Yes, I'm that old. My next book by her was Dragonsong These two books led to many hours over many years of being immersed in her many spectacular worlds. I've reread her books many times and the enjoyment never diminishes. Helva will always have a special place in my heart as my intro to this author's work but I think my favorite charactor is Masterharper Robinton. All most yield to the Master! Ruth is my favorite Dragon. After all, how can you not like a Dragon that always knows when he is!

I'm wondering if we need spoiler spaces....

I cried when Robinton died. I also ran around the house like a note when Menolly made journeyman.

I have most of the Dragon books but unfortunately, have not read them. I heard a while back that they were trying to do a Pern show but the network wanted too many changes so they shutdown production than mess up the story! It's really a shame! I would have loved to see that!

Yes, Anne was VERY smart and had final approval for everything and she didn't like that they were changing the integrity of F'lar and Lessa. I would have loved to have seen it, but am so glad it was shut down do to straying too far from the original story.

And I too am as old as dirt........I have them all and have read and re-read all the stories and I cry EVERY time I read Robinton died.

What I would really like to see is the "next" story......I am hoping it will take them along their development now that they have been reintroduced to modern technology.

I always wished she had done more with the Crystal Singer verse.

As I mentioned in another thread, my mom's 3-in-1 SFBC edition of The Dragonriders of Pern (Dragonflight, Dragonquest & The White Dragon) was the first "grown-up" book I ever read. I IMMEDIATELY fell in love--with Pern, with dragons, and with sf/f in general.

Like ddd, I don't know if I would love the genre half so much--or at all!--if I hadn't read Anne's Pern books. I still remember the day mom bought The Harper Hall Trilogy for me--I started reading Dragonsong in the car on the way home! To this day, Dragonsinger is one of my all-time favorite books. "We love all your songs, even the ones you haven't written yet."

YEARS ago ( yep...I am in the older-than-dirt club too) I picked up the Harper Trilogy at my local library and fell under the spell that is Pern. I confess I was a *bit* confused from time to time during that first book, because it dawned on me that there had been other books that kept mentioning people that I had no clue about. Nevertheless, I finished all three Harper series and dove into the rest. I still from time to time re- read them...in fact I am re-reading Dragoneye right now!

I think that Todd is doing a wonderfu job of taking on the mantle of writing as well.

My favorite ones were the Harper Hall trilogy, Dragonsdawn & The Dolphins of Pern, but I have enjoyed them all!

Have a great time at the Gather, er, DragonCon , ddd!

*Duchess hands Kech a Bubbly Pie*.....

Of COURSE I am a David Eddings Fan! How could you *possibly* tell :)

The Belgariad has a special place in my heart for a number of reasons....one for the fact that outside of the Tolkien books they were the only series that my almost entire family read voraciously. Someone ( I think my Dad) started with Pawn of Prophecy and then we he was done someone else picked it up and started and we continued through them all.And Polgara was ( and still is) my favorite character , as you can tell.

Would you like some Klah as well, my dear?...

i loved the pern books i read; it was so long ago i can't recall which ones, or many of the details. but when i think of pern, like all of the other great magical realms, it holds that sort of half daydream, half movie type of image/reflection in my mind.

I had nearly all her books at one time. But when we moved from WA to AZ I had to leave them behind. So now I have to start collecting them all over again.

I love those books too...... all of her stories have such wonderful continuity. Even the side stories, how they weave back into the main story line. She really is an amazing writer.

I love the Pern books. I can't tell you how many nights I drifted off imagining I'd found a clutch of firelizard eggs! I've considered making a shoulder dragon from time to time, too!

I used to hang out quite a bit at the old Kitchen Table BB (actually it's the first I ever joined). When we did a simulated Flit hatching, I named my gold Zhaan.

The Pern books, particularly the Harper Hall books, have always been some of my favorites.

I've also read her Talent, Petabee and Freedom books. She is SUCH a great writer!!

I, too, am really glad that Todd has taken over the Pern series. I especially like that they've gone back and told a lot of stories from previous passes. The last book, which Todd wrote by himself, was GREAT! I look forward to reading a lot more of them.
