From what I can tell from the news , five explosions have taken place on the underground system and one on a double decker bus. These all occured in the centre of town. Casualties have been reported.

given the extremely volatile nature of this situation, i ask that you not speculate about who is behind this. those are important discussions but i ask that this thread and this board be used to support each other through this horrible time, instead of using it to argue and fight.

Heres the genral picture I think.....

There have been 7 exploshens though out the londen tube network acuring round rush hour about three hours ago.

So far I think less than 5 death have been reported though that may rise, and there are many injured, there are also people still in some of the trains in the network and have not yet been got out.

An alkieda (sp) web site has just relised a statmen that it was then though it has not been athenticated or translated fully yet.

The PM is comeing down from the G8 now to be on the sceen though he will be returning to the G8 tonight.

The main afect and belived aim of the boming was not to kill people as it is normaly but to difable london for at least a short time and creat fear.

Its becoming clear that the attacks were to disable the transport system....heck, our own workers did worse than that in 1983, when both the tube workers and bus workers went on strike for 24 hours. I had to go to Holborn to take an exam that day and though my dad dropped me off there, I had to walk the 10 miles back home.

It was great, walking along long strecthes of London roads, you ended up talking with all sorts of people. Everyone was really friendly and though it was an inconvenience everyone was smilling and getting on with it. Granted, no one was killed as a result of that action, but Londoners will just get on with it. Like I said, Yah boo sucks to whomever did this.

That bus exploded right outside one of our offices in Tavis house. They were evacuated and sent home and no one was hurt but According to DWP Continuity the security services immediately block all mobile communication to prevent further devices being remotely exploded. This is why we cant contact our colleagues by mobile phone.
The picture of that bus ripped to bits really scared me.The police surrounding our offices because of the G8 protests are looking very nervous.

I've seen news reports now of 45 confirmed casualties, 1000's injured and approximately 10% of those are "serious".

I admit that I have the same butterflies in my stomach today that I did on 9/11... as someone else mentioned, I know several people that live in and around London and I was terrified until I signed onto here and saw the sound-off.

All my heart and love goes out to our British Scapers today. Just know we understand the feelings of desperation, anger and fear you're experiencing on this dismal day and you have our love and understanding!!!!

I live in Portsmouth and it's weird to see London like this.
I just hope that there will be no more deaths, although I suppose that is a bit empty. But it is a big hope.
Unfortunately due to security, they have shut down a lot of the other bigger train stations. Portsmouth stations have both been shut down as have Brighton and Swindon.
It seems Britain will be reeling from this for a while to come.
But we will pull through. We are British and we always do!!

Maybe we should think about scaping the politicians of the world.

For those of us that have just woken up (it's 8am on the west coast of the US):

London's been attacked. 4 bombs have gone off - 3 in the underground (aka subway) and 1 on a double-decker bus - at approx 8:50am local time. The explosions took place between Russell Square and Kings Cross Underground; near the Moorgate, Aldgate and Liverpool Street stations Underground; and the Edgware Road station. The double-decker bus blew up just outside Tavistock Hotel, in Tavistock square, shearing off the top.

At least 33 have died in the three explosions in the underground - don't know about the casualities on the bus.

Tony Blair has made a statement and is enroute from GlenEagles - where the G8 was meeting, and the Mayor of London has held a press conference.

I'm OK, but it could have been so different.......

I had planned on visiting a shop owned by friends near Russell Square, also my London rail station is Kings Cross. Instead I discovered I had a Dr's clinic to attend early this morning. My friends have just 'phoned to tell me the terrible news. They have lowered the steel anti-theft grills in the shop windows and doors as blast protection. At the moment they are very unsure what has been happening and don't know how they are going to travel home tonight or what the situation is going to be for the next few days.

Thank you all for your concern.

Okay, this is kind of weird. Round here at this time normally it would still be rush hour. The roads would normally be still very busy. But there is almost silence out side right now. Either the weight of traffic has not got this far out as yet, I know that the outer roads are beginning to be grid locked as people try to get out, or people are taking the advice of not driving around unless its absolutely necessary.

I've been keeping up with the BBC today, and they just showed some parts of London from a helicopter. Really weird to see total gridlock at some places (with some cars being abandoned), while other roads (like the Tower Bridge) are almost empty and occasionally show a car going by.

when i heard about it this morning (from the board, funny enough), i immediately turned on the news. and i had to leave for my internship and i was on edge the whole time because i was driving during rush hour and i wished so bad that it wasn't some kind of coordinated attack. my usual morning radio show didn't even air -- i think that was very classy of them. they just played music. they played John Lennon's 'imagine'. :)

i was pretty edgy the whole day because we have 4 plasma screens on the wall of the office and each of them were turned to a different news station so all i heard all day was updates on london.

Hello everyone - thought I'd check in, despite the fact I'm somewhat relieved I forgot to tell people I was going to London today!!

Yes, fortunately, we missed the King's Cross bomb - only just. Missed the first train from Cockfoster's due to mum going to the toilet, the train we got on stopped at Holloway Road (well, actually 30 metres from the station) when the King's Cross one went off. Although, we were stuck on the Tube for 2 hours before we got out at Arsenal (another train came along and we transferred - they were considering evacuating us, we'd walk along the track to Holloway).

We got a taxi at Seven Sisters (which we got to by bus), and got back to our car at Cockfoster's. Lol, we were then able to drive to Wembley, and my sister still had her Graduation Ceremony!!

Hope everyone else is safe. :)

I'm okay. Just got home from London after lots of walking today. I was supposed to go to Slough this morning for a meeting but got caught up in the underground bombings - the tube I was on was behind one that was bombed at Edgeware Rd. Ours came to a very sharp halt in the tunnel and as we were close to a station they did a line detour and evacuated us out at Baker Street. I was only not on the tube that was bombed because it was so packed I couldn't get on it. How lucky am I? I then tried to get to Slough by bus and foot to Paddington (which was closed) and ended up in Edgeware Rd. Abandoned meeting and walked to my office in Tottenham court Road. They were pleased to see me as I was the only member of staff unnaccounted for - I had rang them from Paddington but was unable to get through as the network was down (probably stopped by the police).

Our employer decided those of us who lived out of London ought to leave early and booked Taxis to take us to any open rail station that we could get home from. Unfortunately they never arrived. I had a very long walk from the end of Tottenham Court Road (near Warren Street station) to Liverpool Street station. It took me 1 1/2 hours to walk there and I didn't know the way I relied heavily on a map (I don't normally have map with me but today, for some reason I did). Fortunately I only waited about 3 minutes for a train when I got there. My feet are very sore, but that's nothing compared with being safe.

Just a note: I used to work as a clinical site manager at the Royal London hospital and know their major accident procedure pretty well. I know (without bias) that the majax procedure there is absolutely excellent. This is where most of the casualites were taken and they are in very, very good hands.

I’m ok. I was nowhere near London today, but thank you for your concern guys.

Well, what can I say about today’s horrific events. I spent much of the morning in a state of shock. I find it hard to comprehend how anyone could leave the house in the morning with the express intention of setting off a bomb and killing innocent people. How the hell do they live with themselves?

I was heartened to see that the people of London pulled together to respond stoically to this outrageous act. My thoughts and prayers go out to the friends and family of those injured or killed. I would also like to express my immense gratitude to the emergency services who by all accounts did a sterling job. Well done guys, you done us proud.

Its good to see everyone safe and sound. I spent a lot of time either studying or just visiting London over the past decade, and I can say that I consider this great city a second hometown (even though about moving there from Texas someday). Best place on Earth, with great people.

Londoners come from a long line of bad asses that have been through hell, and I know the current generation is no exception. Again its good to see everyone okay, and I know the good people of London will get through this.

Yey scaper_s good to hear from you, and Jim couldn't remember what part of the country your were from but great to hear from you too.

I passed on some of the messages regarding the emergency services I have seen around to some of the guys at work last night, and you all made them proud, especially some of them who where right in the thick of it yesterday.

I really means alot, even though they don't know you people, that the rest of the world is out there, thinking and praying for everyone here.

Barring a few exceptions, Londoners have done me proud over the last 24 hours, their resolve to not being beaten is matched by thier compassion to their fellow Londoner. They have behave themselves and done what's needed to be done, heeded all the advice given over the TV and radios.

The Radio stations had done a fantastic job getting personal messages out for people to call home, whist the phone systems have been overrun, then later in the evening, they have acted as talk therapists, allowing people to talk through thier experience. They have come into their own and done a fantastic job.

People on the whole have stayed at home, avoided unnecessary journeys and not called upon the emergency services unless it was truely necessary..(some of our regulars excluded, but that won't ever change ;) ).

Even the politicians are singing from the same song sheet for a change.

Understandably security is high at the moment and though it has cause unbelievable disruption, I haven't heard anyone complain about it. Instead they all have in mind those who have been killed or injured, and are determined to carry on thier lives and show the terrorists that we are not quaking in fear, we are defiant to the last.

I think we are still waiting to hear from Dani. Hopefully he was nowhere near London yesterday.

Also I have nothing but immense admiration for the people of london and the fabulous emergency services, support services and all those who helped in any way they could to make things easier amidst such carnage. Everyone just knuckled down and got on with it and didn't allow terror or panic to set in. I think sometimes it harks back to the fact that the Underground for example has been bombed by the IRA 12 times in the past and recently Canon street was bombed so it's not something Londoners and the UK haven't experienced before. In a really twisted way that helped because alot of those people in the emergency services today probably remember those previous attrocities and certainly the plans they have in place reflect what they learnt from those experiences. Also really proud of the NHS ((Scrape_Medic))) who despite being under immense pressure for day to say services as usual was exemplerary in getting medical attention to those who needed it and treating/moving so many souls at such short notice.

Midlands police defend city evacuation

Polly Curtis and agencies
Sunday July 10, 2005

Birmingham police today defended their decision to evacuate 20,000 people from the city centre last night insisting there had been a "real and significant" threat to lives.
West Midlands police held a press conference to explain their actions after reopening the city's ring road early this morning and lifting the cordon around the city's Broad Street entertainment district and Chinese quarter.

Last night, four controlled explosions were carried out on suspect packages on a bus in the city centre and packages were examined at a Travelodge hotel.

Speaking from the force's headquarters, Chief Constable Paul Scott-Lee said the packages that prompted the evacuation were neither bombs nor hoax explosive devices, but stressed information received by officers had been significant enough to warrant the emergency procedure last night.
The city centre, full of revellers at the beginning of the evening, was left a ghost town as groups out celebrating hen nights and birthdays, along with workers, were evacuated to the perimeter of the centre from 8.40pm.

In the wake of Thursday's attacks on London, Mr Scott-Lee said, the emergency services had to respond after police received calls from members of the public concerned about discarded items.

He said: "Last night, we took the unusual step of evacuating parts of Birmingham city centre and asked members of the public to go home. I can tell you that, bearing in mind the current world climate, the information we received posed a real threat to the lives of people in the city centre."

The public's safety was the top priority, he said, adding: "I believe this threat was significant for me to authorise this evacuation. The packages were incidental to the threat we were responding to."

Asked if the evacuation was an over-reaction by police after last week's events in the capital, he said: "There was a significant threat. Alert members of the public saw things that gave them concern and they responded to it."

No attempts were made to make the packages look like bombs, said the police chief.

"We have found no bombs, but we have responded to what members of the public saw and thought was suspicious and which they quite responsibly drew to our attention," he said.

Despite last night claiming that the situation was unrelated to the London attacks, today Mr Scott-Lee admitted recent terrorist attacks did influence the decision to evacuate.

"When we are making any assessment of threat analysis, we have to make it in the context of what has happened in the immediate time frame," he said.

Police are appealing for the public to remain vigilant and not be put off by false alarms such as those in Birmingham. Anyone seeing an unaccompanied package in a public space should still raise the alarm.

Hey.
Thought i'd check in. I apologise for sparadic postings across the boards over the last months i just haven't really been able to get online  I was not in london on any of the ocassions or in Birmingham but on the 7th there was a controlled explosion in coventry city centre basically cus the whole country went on high alert, i was out of the city centre before i knew anything about it.

Thing that got me most about the attacks wa s that they were attacking every day ordinary people. that pis*ed me off. London is my old home, I'm a cockney by birth, my parents worked down there (my dad infact was a trainee nurse at the hospital the majority of the wounded were taken to). I also heard that my cousin was in one of the tube stations at the time and saw bodies everywhere. I'm thankful that he's safe and that the death toll was small in comparison to Bali, Madrid, Baghdad, and New York. I grieve for the dead and their families but I'll carry on and not let this change my life as i'm sure it's not going to change many other briton's lives because (as i've seen on the other discussions especially concerning werenotafraid.com) we can't let them win and we can't be afraid.
