Help!
I'm starting to get things for next year at college and I'm running into these terms that I can't seem to find anyone to explain!
What the frell is a coverlet? What's a duvet set? Does that include a duvet cover? I'd like to get a Duvet cover rather than a comforter cause I've already got one lying around...but no one seems to like selling them! I've got gift certificates and coupons to Bed and Bath Beyond and Pottery Barn so I'd like to get as much stuff there as possible rather than spending more money everywhere else.
And don't even get me started on the eurosham...what a sham!
AHH!

Duvet and comforter are the same thing or so I've been told. Look around at Bed Bath and Beyond online...maybe that can help. Duvet sets (http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/searchSKU.asp?order_num=-1&SSTR=duvet+sets&go=1&)

they are the same thing. but i don't want a duvet or a comfortor. i want a duvet cover. i keep seeing duvet sheet sets and i don't know if that means there's a duvet cover...

Duvet sets usually include the cover a sheet and a pillowcase, if that helps
eta: a sham is a retangular (oxford) pillowcase, a eurosham is a square pillowcase a comforter is the actual duvet and a duvet is the cover amd a coverlet is a very thin quilt??
Scrape...signing off, once again Lost in Translation???

I think scapemedic explained it well. I believe, generally in the U.S., when you see "duvet" that really means just the cover, that you can slip onto a "comfortor" which is the "quillit"/bed cover/blanket. AgentSun, if you can sew or know someone with a sewing machine and basic sewing skills, you can make a "duvet cover" with 2 sheets (choose sheets according to bed size/comforter size). Just put 2 sheets with the "right" sides facing each other ("wrong" sides out), seam around 3 sides (the 2 sides and the bottom), thus making a big 'ole "pillow case" and then turn it inside-out so the seams are on the inside and the "right" sides of the sheets are facing out. Slip an old comforter inside. It'll be a little longer than your inside comforter, but you can tuck the top part in, or fold it down for "pretty".
You can find cheap, but pretty, sheets lots of places, lots more patterns/options to choose from to suit your taste, and it's really easy to do (or talk someone into doing it for you). I could do it in about 10 minutes or less.

Depending on what you can afford, Linens & Things has some duvet covers. I've seen a few in the clearance area but many of them are kind of pricey. Land's End has really nice comforter covers. Less expensive but really good quality. Ikea is the place to go. They have lots and lots of duvet covers and everything else as well, for less than you'll find them anywhere else. If there's not one near you, maybe you can shop online. I don't know if they offer that but you can check their website to see. I have just gone through this exercise with my son, so I'm pretty current with what's available.

Okay...well, I went to bat today and I think I got what I want. I got black sheets, a red egyptian cotton duvet cover (it was 33 dollars) and then I got white pillowcases. I've got my basic colors right there.

I bought a brand new duvet cover a couple of months ago, and it's already gotten messed up in the wash. *sigh* why is it the expensive stuff is the first to get messed up? :dunno:

aww. how'd it get messed up in the machine?

I dunno, I think maybe some concentrated soap got on it or something. Messed up the color in splotches in a few places.

oh that sucks. it's really is a shame the expensive things get ruined first.

yeah, well, that's why I generally buy cheap sunglasses

i'm surprised my recent ones are still around. i paid 10 bucks for them.

yeah, oddly enough, I still have my $30 pair. Though it has been less than a year since I bought them...
it may also be that I just notice when the expensive stuff gets ruined more. I'm just dreading the day the awesome hand-made tablecloth and napkins I bought in Greece get red wine spilled on them or something. Then again, it is a tablecloth, that's why it's there, no?

i think it's because they're expensive...we notice them more, we take care of them better. and when they get ruined or something happens it's more of a problem because we made more of an investment.

 very true
so why did you have to buy new sheets 'n stuff for school? just needed some replacements? your first post almost makes them sound like a class requirement :lol

hahahaha. i bought new sheets cause the wear they go through at school isn't worth them being used again. i've gotten a new set of sheets every year so far. i wash them a lot at school mostly cause i don't just sleep on my bed. i jump on my bed (well, as much as i can, since i had the top bunk last time), i eat on my bed, i tear through it looking for stuff in the morning...so it gets a bit of wear a tear. plus, i have a different style every year. my first year it was primary colors like blues and whites. last year i had comic book sheets. that was fun but it got annoying after a while. this year i'm going with black, red and white...

I think when I was in school (well, in the dorms anyway), I had a black fitted sheet and a Winnie the Pooh comforter. And that was all. I'd change the sheet from time to time and wash the comforter occasionally, but all in all it was pretty low maintenance.

you should've seen my roommate and i putting sheets on the top bunk, hahahahha. it's always hilarious to be sitting on the bed, trying to put sheets on it at the same time.
"okay, you jump up and i'll pull the sheet under you."
"what if i land before you pull it enough?"
"your sheets were 7 dollars at wal-mart."
"good point."

putting on the mattress pad was even worse because the elastic is so tightly wound that you have to pull really really hard to get it to stretch over the mattress. and one time, the mattress pad that was fitted over one end of the mattress flew back up as we were trying to get the other end down. it almost knocked us off the bed.

wow. I never had trouble like that. Not that I remember anyway. And my bed was like, less than a foot from the ceiling my second year. Although, I don't remember changing my sheets all that often, so who knows

i don't change mine, i just wash them. this was in the beginning of the year, when we first moved in.
eta_carinae
07-10-2005, 09:17 PM
well yes, but that requires taking them off the bed, right? :lol I was a real slob in the dorms. Heck, I still am :D

last year i had a roommate who i swear only washed hers once. by the end of the year, you could see that layer of dirtiness on her sheets. the blue was miscolored and it was this sickening shade of grayish brown. :( no one coming into our room would sit on her bed. that was another reason why i started washing my sheets more. sometimes i'd have 3 people sitting on my bed just to avoid the other one. there were times where i would go to sleep and my friend would be sitting on the end of my bed watching tv.

it was almost like being on a deserted island...we'd actually have to fight for my bed because no one wanted to sit on hers.

yeah, I had that problem too. we had our desk chairs and my overstuffed big brown chair, and this flip-chair thing I bought. And then there was always the floor...
AgentSun
07-10-2005, 09:29 PM
we had the floor but then my friend and i started a hobby that involved paint and the floor was always covered in newspaper and paint.

i hope i get a cool roommate next year...my roommate and i are hoping that if the one that is in our room right now (3 people per room) moves out, they wont catch on and put in someone new.
