Someone posted this over in Seller Central in the ebay forums:

This is a lovely story and yes it's true. I attended an auction today and at one point the auctioneer had up for bid a set of 122 pieces of china. The bidding started at $10.00 and dropped to $2.50 before the first bid was placed. After bidding went on for more than 5 minutes the FINAL price of the china (dishes) was $2,122.50 (WOW).

Only 1 other person was bidding against this elderly woman who was 78 years of age. We were shocked at how much she paid. WE all asked her WHY she paid so much.

She said this (EXACT SET) my husband bought for me on our wedding as a gift to me. I asked her how does she know it's that set. She replied, Let me show you. On the back of EACH plate was written "It's the thought that counts" My love , My Gretta"

She was Gretta and she had sold those dishes 11 years earlier becuase she needed money at the time.

So now she had to pay for these dishes and She was almost in tears knowing she got them back.

The person bidding against her did not know this and was just trying to run her up on bids. In the end the person who bid against this woman went over to her seat and "OFFERED to pay her bill" because this was a story and a warmth that this person never saw happen before. NO NEED TO the auctioneer replied, I will not charge you for them. THy are a gift. The auctioneer said I remember selling then 11 years ago for you and now you have them back. The audience ALL CLAPPED and we all told this woman how lucky she was and we all shook her hands and patted her on the back.

This is a true story that happend today at the auction where my husband and I attend. NEVER in my time have I seen such kindness from a bidder and an auctioneer.

I left the auction with a great feeling of hope that there are realy nice people out there still who realy CARE.

My husband and I wish there were more people like that on ebay.

What a wonderfull way to end the day

I just thought it would be nice to hear about the good side of people every once in a while!

As nice as this story is, it's probably not true. Most auction houses are paid a percentage to sell other people's belongings--such an item most likely wouldn't have belonged to the auction house/auctioneer, so it would be impossible for him to just GIVE the dishes away. "The auctioneer said I remember selling then 11 years ago for you ..."

Also, how would this woman have known that those exact dishes would be on sale? If she had inquired, the auctioneer would have KNOWN she who she was and why she was there.

It's a feel-good story, but someone made it up. Sorry to sound like a cynic, but it bothers me that people have to make stories like this up ... because they almost never happen in real life.

There's a story... I wasn't allowed to buy a hamster-But my mom gave me to buy a hamster to my friend. As I was waching, two of the hamsters were fighting. The hamster my friend chose died youg. This happened in year 1994.
In the begginnig of year 1996 I went to a pet shop.I saw there few hamsters, poor living things.Even I didn't have much money, I saved one of them.
Later on I heard it was one of these hamsters that were fighting in front of my eyes.If it had been a horse or even a bunny or the only animal for me...
But the cruel thing is that this poor hamster was dumped in a shop and I really regognize it.
So sometimes incredible stories are real...
Long story short...
That hamster had becomed blind and it was him who recognized me first...
