The 700th anniversary of the death of William Wallace is due to be marked in Scotland and London.
Since being hung, drawn and quartered on 23 August, 1305, Wallace has become a cultural icon.

Wallace, who led the Scots to a victory over English forces at Stirling Bridge in 1297, avoided capture until 3 August, 1305, when he was turned over to English soldiers at Robroyston.

He was taken to London and found guilty of treason at Westminster Hall.

Following the trial, he was stripped naked and dragged to Smithfield Market at the heels of a horse.

He was strangled by hanging, but released near death, drawn and quartered and beheaded.

His head was placed on a pike on top of London Bridge and his limbs displayed, separately, in Newcastle, Berwick, Stirling and Perth as a warning to others 23rd August 1305.
