Last summer, shark attacks seemed to be the rage of the reporting world.
This summer, The Holloway Case, The Cruise Ship Case, and now the Popovich case and the Olivia Newton-John's boyfriend case are the hot stuff.
To all you media savy FMDers: Why are these cases so hot this summer, and why does the media always seem to choose very similar stories.

News syndication? :D
In Europe this summer every newspaper wrote about the so-called "piano man". He turned up in England - no speech - and was put into psychiatric ward. Pictures of him where cicrculated all over Europe, but no-one seemed to know him. The psychics thought maybe he was a professional piano player, since the first thing he did was a fairly good drawing of a piano.
Anyhow, this thing went on and on and on, and some days ago it turned out that he was just a miserable guy from a small german village. Strange though that he was able to fool the psychics for so long a time.

I dont find stuff liek that to be "news". sure it sucks that they are missing but to spend day after day updating us about absolutley nothing at all is stupid. Oh and i almost threw a shoe through the tv when i was watching the news one night and they had a headline report that Britney SPears might be having a boy. thats not frelling news.
But I too have noticed the "trends" if you will, of summer news stories. they never come solo, always in groups. Shark attacks as you said had multiple, and now abductions are coming in groups. Not that the number of abductions have rose, its just that the news thinks rich people are more important than anyone else.

It's cucumber season. A lot of people are on vacation which causes less important news to be reported. Just hang on for a few more weeks.

I have barely paid attention to the news for months now. I have hardly any idea what is going on in the world today, aside from the few things I try to keep track of :D

My guess is that someone reports one story and boosts the ratings, so all the rest of the media jumps aboard and tries to get the same result by reporting the same kind of story over and over.

I agree with that. They are just now reporting on the meth problem, which is probably one of the biggest stories in America.
Bob Costas refused to do a show that was about Natalee Holloway because he thought it wasn't news. Good job Bob!
