The first photo looks like a "hooked rug". (You use a large hook, somewhat like a crochet hook, to pull short bits of yarn through a large mesh canvas.)

This is made with long yarn and needles.I have once made a pillw case as hooked rug.I think this must be a real rug then...

Its called a latch hook rug. I have the same one here that I did last summer. :D
