View Full Version : Help those affected by Hurricane Katrina

Jul

From the reports coming out of the affected areas are that it will be at least months before they get electricity. New Orleans is being completely evacuated, since one of the levees ended up breaking. Biloxi is devestated with, currently, the death toll at a little over 100 so far - and they've just started the counting. People in Jefferson Parish in Louisiana are being told that they won't be able to go home for at least a month.

These people need help. If you're able to help, please do.

I'm posting the information that Instapundit (http://instapundit.com/archives/025235.php) (Glenn Reynolds) has posted to his blog on places you can donate. There are probably dozens of other places you can donate to as well:

FLOOD AID UPDATE: Here are some places you can donate to hurricane Katrina relief:

American Red Cross (http://www.redcross.org/)

Catholic Charities (http://www.catholiccharitiesusa.org/news/katrina.cfm) is involved, and probably has lots of resources to draw on in the heavily Catholic New Orleans area.

Liz at Rightalk suggests that animal lovers donate to the Humane Society. (https://secure.hsus.org/01/disaster_relief_fund_2005?)

Here's the link for Methodist Relief. (http://www.methodistrelief.org/site/pp.asp?c=bhKNI4PHIpE&b=876335)

The Salvation Army (http://www.salvationarmyusa.org/) does good work. (WalMart just gave them a million dollars, (http://www.walmartstores.com/wmstore/wmstores/Mainnews.jsp?pagetype=news&template=NewsArticle.jsp&categoryOID=-8300&contentOID=14879&catID=-8248&prevPage=NewsShelf.jsp&year=2005) but that's just the barest beginning of what's needed.)

Hugh Hewitt recommends Samaritan's Purse (http://www.samaritanspurse.com/)

I'll keep updating this as I get new suggestions.

Technorati Tag: Flood Aid (http://technorati.com/tag/Flood+Aid)

ETA: if you go to this post at Instapundit you'll see a very, very long list of places where different bloggers are suggesting different charitable donations for the survivors of Hurricane Katrina: http://instapundit.com/archives/025235.php

Pick the one that works out best for you.

Thanks for posting this link Jul. :hug2:

I don't know how many members of the board know that I was born and raised in New Orleans. I moved to NJ about 5 years ago to marry I-am-so-not-John. :D

I can't begin to tell you what it is like to watch all of this on TV. Luckily all of my family down there evacuated before Katrina made land. Thank God everyone is safe. But, I have no words to explain to all of you how this feels. Everyone I love and care for ...have no where to live! Can you imagine that? It's an indiscribable feeling. I'm numb and so sad.

I just can't imagine what the people down there are going to do to get back to a normal life....it will take months or years.

Please, if you can, any amount of contributions would be so helpful for these these poor, suffering people.

This IS America's tsunammi!!!

Please help if you can. Any amount, no matter how small, will help.

If experience with the tsunami last year was any indicator, people should be careful of the many shady "charities" that will be popping up in the next few days or so, trying to get your donations that should be going to reputable groups.

To check out a charity before you give, go to www.guidestar.org.

Also, the BBB Wise Giving Alliance is a reputable organization that certifies charities based on whether or not they follow charitable "best practices." Their website is www.give.org.

Okay this is crazy.......this is mainland America! How quickly things go to hell in a handbasket when Mother Nature turns violent!!

I think that in the past we have had to listen to interpreters to hear the voice of the displaced during times of natural disassters......but hearing it straight from the horses mouth so speak, I am shocked and moved.

I hate to think what the final death toll will be, and so many people with no homes, no future in that city, no hope at this time.....its just crazy.

I have a neighbor who is from Jackson, Mississippi.
He is going there on family business next week.
He is taking supplies with him to donate to a shelter at the
family church in Jackson.
He started planning this on Thursday night (9/1) and
already has received donations
from 4 or 5 people and has promises from 10 more people.
He is taking bottled water, clothing, non-perishable food items, toiletries, and
anything else we can think of that the people might need.
(Luckily his own family members in the South are doing okay and can stay in their homes.)

Anyone wishing to donate toward the TC SCaper effort to send 1,200 diapers (calculations figure to .38 perdiaper) to the Airforce Base mentioned in that thread can contact me. I will provide an explanation of what we have planned, as well as how to donate.

Transport Provided to Anywhere - Room Desperately Needed! (For the
Animal Victims of Katrina)
There is transportation provided, with people ready and waiting, for
upwards of 200 dogs and 150 cats so far rescued from the devastation of
hurricane Katrina. What these animals need is a place to go. Kennels,
boarding, vets offices, shelters with any extra space, foster homes and
rescues. Even one or two open kennels would greatly help.

From what we know, all animals have been vaccinated and are in good
health considering the conditions. There are dogs and cats of every
breed and size. Some are in groups of two, three or four, hailing from
the same family, while some are solitary. ANY KENNEL SPACE AVAILABLE
CAN CERTAINLY BE USED. These drivers are willing to move these animals
ANYWHERE they need to go. Absolutely anywhere.

The current safe houses for these animals are being inundated and some
of these pets will have to be euthanized if they are not moved to make
room for the incoming animals.

Please feel free to pass on this information everywhere. Every forum,
every list, every community.

REMEMBER THESE ANIMALS WILL BE TRANSPORTED TO YOU.

If you know anyone, anywhere, that is willing to take in even one cat
or dog, please have them contact Lynda at the information provided
below.

They are also asking for ANY kind of donations for the animals -
money, food, bedding, water, etc.

Please Contact Lynda V. at: 203 515 3024 (cell)

Please contact at any time, day or night. These volunteers, rescuers

Hey everyone...

This idea sprouted from an effort our very own twich is making to spread the word regarding Katrina survivors who will be moving into the Airforce Base her family calls home. It was initially meant to be something that the TC Scapers were going to attempt on their own but, to be amazingly proudly honest, I got too many offers of help to let it just be us. The idea has morphed from one group, to all of the midwest groups and finally I decided to open it up for anyone who wanted to make a small but very tangible dent in a huge picture of human suffering. Take the time to read the excerpt from twich, and follow through to the end for an explanation of what myself and others are going to do.

"I received word this morning from Lackland AFB Family Support Center
that there are 39 women who are ready to give birth at any time or
have just given birth. They have no newborn clothes, no maternity
clothes. They're in need of any/everything that will help in that
situation. There's a need for stuffed animals for kids. Toys.
DorothyGail received word that they are looking for kid's DVDs so that
the kids can have some sort of entertainment to take their minds off
of things.

Twenty five THOUSAND people coming to San Antonio alone. We've already

I have located a website at which we can order 1,200 diapers of varying size/weight/age requirements. The total expense of said diapers would be $380.00, including the shipping costs to twich in Texas. The expense comes down to less than .38 per diaper, hardly anything when you stop to think about it.

Let's pull together folks.

Any donations in excess of $380.00 will be applied toward increasing the total number purchased.

Back on topic...
Other than making people upset with information that isn't even directly from Red Cross officials, FEMA officials or anyone who is willing to be directly named what have people heard which is good and in the works (ie the twichies preparing to help as first hand as possible; DorothyGail volunteering to be a donation dropoff point for the Lackland Project; increased donations to the Red Cross....etc)? Turn the anger, the disgust, the desire to blame and any other feelings toward accomplishing something good as opposed to spreading the ill-will.

I am personally VERY happy that the donation I am helping to organize is going so well.

I saw this on tribe.net, and I checked out thier web page. They need volunteers to make phone calls to victims loved ones, and volunteers to do internet searches to the same end. It's a fabulous way to help, especially for the geekiest of us who live on the phone and internet, and those on a budget. If you have unlimited call plans, and/or broadband, please volunteer your time.

GRASSROOTS GROUP PROVIDES FREE CALLS FOR VICTIMS

www.lifelist.us

We know that many Katrina victims are desperate to communicate with
loved ones, and that access to phone service is limited. If you can get
to a working phone for a few minutes, simply leave us instructions on
who you need called and what you'd like relayed, and we will handle it
for you.

With one toll-free call to LIFE LIST, Katrina victims can alert loved
ones to their location, update them on their well-being and begin to
make initial contact for additional assistance.

Those in need are invited to leave a 1-minute toll-free voicemail at
1-877-LIFE-LIST. Within 24 hours, our volunteers will personally relay
your message. From housing inquiries to letting a friend know that you
are alive, LIFE LIST volunteers will make the call for you. Leave your message and rest assured that it will be delivered. And God bless"

It's as easy as that... 1-877-LIFE-LIST. www.lifelist.us

Good news! And many thanks to Jason, the manager of our local Walmart store. I visited Walmart on Saturday (9/3) and I looked for the manager of the store. I wanted to ask him if I could get an extra discount on the summer 'beach shoes' that were marked down for clearance. Jason, the store manager was most helpful, once he established that I was going to buy some quantity of shoes, he arranged for me to purchase over 60 pairs of 'flip-flops' for half of the clearance price! 60 pair of shoes for Hurricane Katrina refugees staying in a shelter in Jackson, Mississippi.

A lot of people have been donating clothes to people affected by Katrina, but one thing that has been overlooked is the need for plus sized clothes. Twich mentioned that a friend of hers stopped by a shelter to drop off donations and saw that plus sized women were wearing trash bags because they had nothing else to wear.

Guys, I am a size 16. I have been insulted by strangers because of my weight. I have been harrassed at work because of my weight. I have dealt with condesending attitudes and lectures from my family because of my weight. I've whined about the avaliability of pretty, young looking clothes for someone my weight.

But I've always had enough clothes. I've never had to cover myself with garbage bags because nothing else was avaliable. If you're overweight (or hell, underweight) yourself, you know what it feels like to be singled out because of size. You know how degarding it is, how it can trigger shame and self hatred. If you are average weight yourself, but know someone who doesn't weigh what is considered "normal", you know the ferocity of anger that comes when one of your friends is treated like poorly because of appearance.

But I bet you don't know anything like this. I don't.

I know people have been giving what they can, and I know at this point some people have given all that they can. But if you can spare a little extra, this is an area of relief you might want to consider.

One thing that was mentioned on our local news -

Due to the dislocated heading to faroff states, many of which have different Fall/Winter climates, there will also be a need for season appropriate outerwear (ie heavy coats; sweaters; heavier pants...etc). Minnesota is most likely going to be starting its yearly coat drive early for precisely this reason (I guess they are moving some refugees to Camp Ripley in Northern MN).

Because somebody asked about the animals.... from the HSBV website:

Hurricane Katrina -- Assisting the Animal Victims

The Humane Society of Boulder Valley is working with a coalition of regional and national animal welfare agencies to help with the relief efforts in the areas affected by Hurricane Katrina. Many of these animals are being relocated to other shelters including the Houston SPCA. If you would like to help with the animal relief efforts in the areas hit by this storm, contact the Louisiana Veterinary Medical Association , the Louisiana SPCA , or the Houston SPCA .

There are many national groups providing assistance as well, contact the American Humane Association , Code 3 Associates , The Humane Society of the Unites States , and the ASPCA . Be sure to designate your gift as disaster relief for the animal victims of Hurricane Katrina. Additionally, the Colorado State Animal Response Team has established a fund which will be used to support animals brought to Colorado from the affected areas, for more information go to www.cosart.org/Katrina.htm.

The Humane Society of Boulder Valley anticipates we will be receiving animals from the affected areas and we will update our website as we have more information including how you can support those animals we bring to this community.

Case you haven't thought that this is such a big problem, and you haven't yet donated......heres a picture of the extent of the flooding. The original high resolution picture is from the NASA earth observatory web site and the white aread, flooded is based on the colour of the water.

If you don't believe it....go to the NASA website and download the original image yourself....you can zoom right in and see where the beach is now.

Another picture :bump:

This is from the NOAA satellite, very high resolution image of an area in north east New Orleans. The originaly picture has a resolution of 1 pixel = 1.2 feet but I had to cut it down to get to the less than 100KB to post here, but you can find other high resolution pics here..

This (http://www.livejournal.com/users/shiba_inu/163207.html) is a fascinating (and for once, uplifting) account of the medical evacuations underway in NO and Mississippi.
