So last night, my brand new shiny computer suddenly stopped recognizing the keyboard and mouse which are plugged into USBs. I took them out and put my old keyboard and mouse back on and it worked fine. The computer has been functioning with the new keyboard/mouse since I got them all (about a month) and now it suddenly doesn't like them. This computer was built for me and I'm not in contact with the builder anymore, so there is no technical support.
Any suggestions? I have alternate USB ports I could try I'm just scared there's something wrong with the keyboard/mouse and that they would ruin the other ports. Help!

I take it you have tried to reboot the whole computer..you might want to try and relaod the USB driver.

What kind of keyboard and mouse are they? Was there a cd (or two) that came with the mouse and/or keyboard you need to install with device drivers on it or other software? Assuming your using windows it should detect them as soon as you plug them, but it might not if there is specific software you need to install first.
Try plugging something else into the USB ports that the keyboard and mouse were in to see if they work or just check them in the device manager.
If the USB ports work and there's no cd for your mouse/keyboard to install then try plugging them back in, going to the control panel then printers and other hardware, then choose add hardware from the upper left corner (or if you have the classic control panel view just click add hardware from the control panel right away) and use the add hardware wizard to try and get it to add the hardware manually.
Hope that helps.

the USB ports on my last laptop did the same thing. I had to reinstall the USB drivers. If other devices are working with the ports it might not be the port issue -- it might be your devices. Try updating those drivers first.

If there were CDs with the keyboard and mouse I didn't install them...mainly because I didn't install anything on this comp. The person who built it installed every peice of hardware and software that I could possibly want.
I'll try plugging other things into the ports, thanks. I may also try plugging the keyboard and mouse into other ports b/c I have a bunch. <sigh>

Try and find the make and model # of the keyboard & mouse and do a google search for the drivers.
If there are any specific to the devices, they shoud pop right up.
