View Full Version : Well this day sucks

Well, I thought today was going to be a good day. I was wrong! Its only 10:30 in the morning here and already i am miserable. I work at a very prominent bank in the Southeast United States. Today my boss calls me in to his office and informs me that he is aware of the fact that i am leaving June 7th for the Marine Corp. He then proceeded to rip me a new one telling me that i screwed him over and that he can't count on me for anything. He then threatened to fire me which didn't scare me because i know by law he can't do that. But he then aggressively pressured me to take a demotion, something i did not want to do but knew he would not take no for an answer. So now i am pissed and sick to my stomach. to think that i thought i was doing a good thing going to defend my country, and i get treated like this. I fell like crap right now. I can't believe this is happening

That's not right and you should be able to do something about it.

That does suck! Is there a superior to your boss that you can complain to?
It's just awful, Ka D'Argo.
You ARE doing a good thing to defend your country!
You are the better person in this situation.
You already know the benefits you will reap as a veteran.
Maybe your boss is jealous because he never had the guts to go into the Service,
but secretly wishes that he had served his country.
Anyway, don't let this get you down -You ARE doing the right thing.
contact your recruiter and see if there's any legal action, like with your state board of employment, that you can take. this shouldn't be happening to you.

...or simply remind your boss that you will soon have access to a wide variety of firearms.
Biiiiiig Boomers!! I'm all about things that go BOOM in the night! Takes a real a$$ hole to treat you that way when you are doing the honorable thing!

you may wish to remind your boss that almost a years notice is better than 2 wks or NONE... had you already informed them you would be entering the Corps? I believe there is a law of some sort against this kind of treatment, but I could be wrong. Like Jul said the recruiter will know, if only who to get in touch with. You don't HAVE to take a demotion, esp without cause. They can demote at will, but you don't have to roll over. I would definitely take this up with HR as well [I know in some companies that's the Nuke option...] Also I would expect the odds are that there are other Marines within the organization... you may wish to speak with them informally ["have you ever had this happen..."] You may well discover how well they look after a future little brother...

Hey Big D you are better off without this jerk as a boss. Get a transfer to another branch.
Those of us who are not defending the country salute your courage by stepping up to the plate to make things safe for the rest of us. :hugz:
Don't let this jerk ruin your day, we're proud of you!

Thanks everyone, i appreciate the words of encouragement. I'm actually looking into a complaint with HR right now and it might blow up, but he should be expecting this.

Genius idea!!! I totally forgot that there is a private banker right in the next office that used to be a marine! He has some pull around the bank so maybe he will tell me what i should do. Thanks for the idea

I would definately take legal action against this. You will be leaving soon to go defend your country. You would think that this jerk would be proud but I guess not.

Are you going in as active duty or Reserve/National Guard because If you join the active service you have no re-employment rights. Re-employment rights are only for National Guard and Reserves activated for federal service, then returned to the same posistion.

A girl I'm dating had the same thing happen to her. She is in the reserves, but is fixing to go on active duty in Kosovo. Her boss couldn't fire her, so he decided to make her life a living hell, doing whatever he could to make her quit. Blaiming everything on her, telling her what a terrible teacher she was, even though she was the top in business, etc.
I don't think she went to her CO about it, since she wants to quit the business anyways.

Strategy note: See if you can get the dorkwad to give you a written statement about why he wanted to demote you. This can be very valuable, especially if it is in direct conflict with previous performance evals.

I guess he's also a world-class jerk! I'm guessing you have some kind of recourse. Going to HR is the right first step. After that, well, call in the Marines! They'll whip some sense into him. Definitely not the kind of guy who should be a boss. I had one of those once. He was abusive to his employees and used to yell at people all the time and treated everyone as if they were stupid. We had a joke there that the reason the floors were carpeted was so that you couldn't hear his hooves clicking when he walked by.

:hug2: I hope this can be resolved.
I am constantly amazed by cruel and stupid people.
Don't let this person get away with this or he will continue this type of behavior and it's just wrong. :(

I've had bosses like that.
I've had some that were so bad they would refuse to allow the entire department to recieve the training we needed to do our jobs, and then blame us for not being trained and demote us all, then complain that there's no one there to do the job we were all demoted from. I've had to put up with all kinds of name calling and threats, comments on my intelligence, etc, etc. It's not worth it. The advice of the other posts sounds pretty good, so I'd take it.
I'm sorry you've had such a bad day, but I hope you feel better and can get it worked out soon.

Just for fun...imagine him duck-taped to the ceiling and forced to listen to the "Schnappi" song until his brains turn into tapioca.

Thanks eta, it worked great for a friend of mine who's boss took a disliking to her after she lost a bunch of weight.
Or even worse: Ben Stiller's "Milkshake" from the end of Dodgeball! :hork:
Is that just the music, or with visual?

Why in the world would a boss take issue with someone losing weight???
I'm amazed all over again.
