Sorry for the cross-posting and all, dear mods and admins!

Hi guys,

Some of you know I'm a writer (really, who isn't?) but I am really looking to make it my career. I'm currently working on developing my first novel (or what I hope to be my first novel) and at the same time, I'm working on this project of mine, which is tentatively called The Fandom Project, and I'd like your help.

Goal: The Fandom Project (TFP) is a look at science fiction, it's importance in "fandom" and the impact it has on people.

I personally believe that science fiction is the most "connected" genre of fiction, whether in print or television or film. It requires above and beyond the norm from viewers, it requires a suspension of belief, an opening of the mind, a large imagination, and a lot of examination. I believe that because science fiction demands so much from its viewer, the viewer, in turn, becomes part of that universe, and then joins the "fandom," which I will also look at.

What I really need from all of you is essays or views into what you consider a fandom to be, why you consider yourself part of it, what shows or books or films you have been fans of, and why.

Also, I want to look at what makes fans, fans. Why they do the things they do, spend money on conventions, host conventions, etc.

I also think that science fiction actors get the most love, because of this connection between the genre and the fan. I think it's the most rewarding genre, also the harshest.

I want to look at these things:

1. Why is there such a connection?
2. What makes fans?
3. The numbers behind the science fiction genre (how lucrative it is as a market)
4. The social stigma and the badge of pride (the public's view of scifi fans, and why the fans just grin)

So if you guys have any insight on this, please e-mail me your thoughts and information at fandomproject@gmail.com .

Right now this is going to be a web site, since I've got nothing in line right now with anyone professional.

I'm opening a FAQ portion of this to address any questions you might have or that I think someone might have:

1. Will this be published? There are no plans right now to publish -- science fiction is my hobby, and my passion. I'm really just looking at this as a grassroots project, one step at a time. I'm not thinking so big as to suggest it might be published.

2. Will we get credit for what we send you? Yes, you will be credited.

3. Where can we see this? Right now there is no place that is hosting this project, unless you have a URL to my mind. This is a work in progress and I have not yet decided whether it will be posted as I write it, or when it gets done. It's a massive project, bigger than I could have imagined it when I first considered embarking on it.

4. What do you want to see? Anything that you have a hankering to write to me. I'd like to receive essays, blog posts, board posts, snippets of conversation, anything of that sort. I'm only using things that I have been given permission to use, and that means that I've asked you.

If you wake up at 4 am, and have something you think I need to hear (or in this case, read) then send me an email, see if I'm online, or send me a message on PM.

I don't require anything -- not an opus or a manifesto -- I just want fans to speak from their hearts and minds.

Please feel free to ask questions!
