My Film Industry class invites different guest speakers to come and lecture to us. So far we have had 2 Producer's (Chris Brown and Philip Bowman) and 1Lawyer (a Mr. Bolam). Yesterday our guest speaker was to be a Director and it turned out to be Michael Pattinson. I had no clue who this guy was. He brought in a show reel and as it is playing I noticed a Farscape clip! Needless to say I perked right up. He talked about an Australian TV show he directed 3 episodes of "Mortified", showed a couple scenes, and displayed overheads of the script so we could see the notes he made for shooting. Very cool to hear him explain the thought process of bringing what's on the script to the screen.

I must admit to being a little "star struck" since after noticing he directed a Farscape episode (Lava's A Many Splendored Thing) and as such don't remember half of what he said. I set there thinking, "This dude directed an episode of Farscape! How fucking awesome is that?!" He spoke for a little over an hour and his Q&A lasted for about 30mins. I asked him what is his favorite genre to direct? Sadly SciFi wasn't his answer. He said he had no particular favorite, but as he is currently working on a comedy, that comedy is what he enjoys.

After the Q&A I told a few of my classmates that I had to ask him what it was like working on Farscape. So I go down and say, "Hi I'm Scott and I noticed you did a Farscape episode!" Michael, "Do you like that show?" Me, "It's my favorite!" as the huge smile on my face should be a dead give away. Me, "What was it like working on Farscape?" Michael, "Yeah it was alright." How Aussie is that? We talked for about 2 minutes before he was dragged away by my Professor. Michael seemed really nice and I enjoyed listening to him speak. Talk about unexpected surprises! Anyway, just wanted to share this with all of you.
