Tomarrow, Friday March 10, I'm leaving to go down to New Orleans to spend a week cleaning up (and by cleaning up I mean hands get acquainted with shovel). I'm looking foreward to the 20 hr bus trip and week being a beacon of hope for the people who have lost everything, but I cant help but be scared to death for what I'm about to encounter. There are 45 of us going from WVU and we are supposedly sleeping in a warehouse with makeshift showers and port-o-potties.
There was a projected 2000 people going to this camp this week but now over 4000 have signed up and they are short of food and supplies. That is not something I wanted to hear!!
OK, well....that's my insecurity off my chest.

Hey, at least you're doing something. I'm sure it'll be rough, but nothing you can't handle. How long are you going to be down there?

take a suitcase or cooler full of gallon jugs of water and guard them well... whether or not you've thought of this or if your group has thought of this... if room allows you should still have a stash of your own... AND at least powerbars of some sort (again, your own stash) of course, your personal stashes could be shared if the need arises...
I'm just saying this because a doctor friend of mine spent some time doing her own brand of volunteering and she recommended such action for any of those heading down there.

Hi WH
I guess I am too late to point you to this report on the failure of FEMA to restore New Orleans to it's former glory.

we stayed in the middle of the 9th ward where it was pretty bad. but all together the group we were with cleaned and gutted about 700 houses last week, so the rebuilding is still going strong.
