View Full Version : pretty, shiny, DOCTOR WHO SPOILER THREAD
here's a short thread for the spoilers to the finale to the doctor who finale:
TalynLives' post on spoilers for this week's ep:
*Season 3 spoiler*
They auditioned a lot of people whom I knew from various British programmes. None of them were particularly impressive. The favourite prior to "Adeola" was a poor knock off of Billie Piper. "Adeola" does sound like the best bet in my opinion.

The girl Adeola who was killed by Cybermen in last weeks episode is now the new assistant...what, could they not be bothered to audition anyone else?

But it's still much prettier than the peasant chic brown velour outfits some shows like to put people in. ;) Then again, it could just be who is wearing it that makes it acceptable.

I can't say I hate it, but I did enjoy the pinstriped one slightly more. But I'd probably like him in anything. :D

September 29th - a two hour block of Doctor Who. They're being good for once and airing The Christmas Invasion, though they'll probably either edit it down and air the first one after it (which would cut 10+ minutes from TCI) or stretch it to two hours and stuff it full of commericals.

I really reeally dont like the new suit. Remeber last years Christmas episode? Where they made the big deal about him choosing the new suit and what not? I thought that was a significant moment, and then what do they do? Go and change it on us season 3. It clashes horribly with the TARDIS. *shakes head* No. I dont like it at all.
Also, im starting to get a bit sad...Im getting the impression that Martha is going to be such a total rip off of Rose it wont be funny. Id rather her be completley non-plussed to Ten's sexiness and just leave him to brood over his poor little Lost Rose.

Caught the first episode and liked it, but had some reservations about the relationship between the Doctor and the new girl. But it seems pretty cool for now, as long as they don't make too much of it. Other than that, it was a great story to start.

I'm liking the new girl a lot so far. I personally thought that the relationship between Rose and the Doctor worked better with 9 than 10, and I'm looking forward to seeing how ten does with someone new.

Part I finale for Series #4: "The Stolen Earth" aired tonight. For anyone still able to catch it on SciFi, it was pretty Farscapian; fast, crammed loaded, gotta watch multiple times, etc. They threw in everything from Star Wars type music to flying saucers to Colony Collapse Disorder (C.C.D). :aok:

*Journey's End* seemed alrite to me, even with the relaxed pace at the end.
Decent episode, even for those who don't normally watch the other two spin-offs, *Torchwood* and *Sarah Jane*. I figure I also gotta cut it some slack being unfamiliar with the British cultural references in there; and without being used to the accents it was hopeless to figure out what they were saying, with the three doctors going back and forth inside like this Donna Noble vs. Doctor Who skit here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WxB1gB6K-2A
Davros was a freaky scare watching as a youngster, like Balok from the Corbomite Maneuver (Trek) and the wicked witch of the West. Much better than the beetle where Donna had something on her back.
IIRC, this episode had a million viewers in the US, and over 10 million at the BBC? People say it's likely up for a Hugo at year's end. Yeah, and the Christmas special too.

I don't get it
Nicola

Don't get it? How come?
If you watched the Canadian airing (last Friday) the CBC chopped a huge amount out of the episode. Stuff that was really important. Especially at the end when they skipped over the importance of the Tardis flying smoothly with all the Doctors friends helping him do the job. God that was a beautiful scene. And they chopped it out.
The farewell between Rose and the Doctor was mangled and consequently viewers would have been confused why she ended up kissing the half-human Doctor.
Donna's fate broke my heart.
Plus the Doctor's conversation with Donna's mother - there was some important stuff there hacked right out.
Mangling the episode the way CBC did lessened - or even obliterated - the impact of all the goodbyes - especially the Donna one - had on the Doctor. The lonely, lonely Doctor.
I thought Journey's End was brilliant and I think it deserves the Hugo. All those disparate threads - from different series yet! - brought together to suddenly weave a story that was outstanding.
I understand that David Tennant's doctor talks very fast and it isn't just the English accent with which it is difficult to keep up. Subtitles help a lot - especially when Donna starts talking like the Doctor also. Brilliantly written - but blurringly fast.

i have to say i kinda hated the arc. not that it wasn't fun and not that seeing all the companions and Torchwood crossover wasn't groovy, but....imho, they completely *wasted* the Bad Wolf plotline, and what they did to Donna was really fairly totally horrific and mean.
but that's Rusty; great out of the gate and utter rubbish at the end. Rose went from being a bad-ass, dimension-hopping, UNIT-leading, very near Doctor-like heroine to a whiny, schmoopy, out of nowhere and with no reason ohDoctorimissyouiloveyouidon'tcareaboutthefateofth euniverseicamelookingformyonetruelove waste of a character.
and wtf with Donna? seriously? all that just to make angst for the Doctor? oh, ffs. Rusty can be about a subtle as a train wreck, and i, for one, can't WAIT for Moffett to take over.
:::shuffles feet awkwardly:::
i, uhm, kinda ranted there...sorry. :D

I was pretty upset about Donna's outcome. All that and then pfft! Nothing....not even allowed a hint of a memory, and no real consistency as to why not!
I really liked her character, especially after the shippitardiness of rose and then the lovesick dog of that one whose name I can never remember...(was she that bad of a character that I can't remember her name?). But Donna she was great, truely as quick witted as the Doctor and gave as good as she got.
And I really wish they would not make quite so much of the lonely Doctor thing. Its going to make him look a little whimpish if it carries on. When Christopher Eccleston brought back the Doctor it was all guns blazing, and DT carried that on, but somewhere in the third season it felt like the unrequited-love thing was projecting the man-in-need-of-a-companion thing onto the Doctors character.

They seem to get younger with every regeneration. It's like Benjamin Button syndrome or something!

Did anyone see that political drama series on BBC2 a while back? It was called 'Party Animals'... Matt Smith was in that, he was very good actually, he played a young guy working being the scenes for an MP. So I'm not worried about him being too young or inexperienced... just on how he interpretates the doctor! :D

The "End of Time" is a brilliant departure for DT; okay there are some plot holes or things that didn't make sense.
Timothy Dalton was brilliant as the mad Rassilon (I pray to god I spelt that right or who45 will wap me upside my head!).
Simms was brilliant reprising The Master, only dissapointingly he was only given the last five minutes of his role to really show what makes him The Master.
It was great to see and resolve some characters who have been in the show since it was reprised, and I guess they won't be coming back anytime soon, new broom and all that.
You COULD be picky about the plot and all that, but there, it's done, time to move on; and Matt looks good for it.
I nearly cried at the end, but thats not DW, just when you think the tears are about to come, in comes the new guy, and a few laughs to boot.
But I will miss David, he has been brilliant as the Doctor. Not long now till I have to get back behind the sofa, roll on spring.

Haven't been able to watch any of the new episodes myself yet, but 3 of the last 4 fans I've met have been in their early 20's or even 'tweenish maybe, haven't watched any Doctor Who until Matt Smith showed up, and are watching on the internet instead of on TV.
:frontrow:
This show seems to be creating a whole new generation of young rabid American fans of both genders - so much so that it could eventually go mainstream on our side of the Atlantic. The lady fans are about as wild over Matt Smith as they are over Lautner and Pattinson.
A both wonderful and Twilight-Zone-ish experience all together.

I thought "End of time" was truly terrible to be honest, although I loved the regeneration scene at the end and the handling of the 10th Doctor's fear of regeneration in general. Russell T. Davies can do great introspective character moments, this is his strength (see "Turn Left" for an example). When he tries to do grand epic plots though, he completely loses the run of himself and they invariably turn out to be a complete mess.
I loved series 5 of DW with Matt Smith. It was the first time since the early days of the show's return that I found myself waiting with excitement for each episode. Matt Smith may be my new favourite Time Lord.

I thought Matt Smith did an excellent job in the role. Quite surprised, actually, since I had given up during Tennant's last year and had very low expectations.
However, I still much prefer Pertwee's era. There were no easy solutions in his stories, and the Doctor had to use his technical skills to save the day. The writing in these last 5 years has been rather weak, resulting in cellphones that can communicate across time and space and a sonic screwdriver that functions more like a magic wand. Sorry, but we don't live in a 'point and click' universe.

Fortunately, there seems to have been a concious decision on the part of Steven Moffat to return the sonic screwdriver to a more basic utilitarian role. It's even lampshaded once or twice.

While I do not particularly care for Matt Smith --I have to admit that DW has been quite fun with him as The Doctor. In some way I am able to see past the actor (or person, or face, whatever...) and just enjoy The Doctor and the stories for themselves. And don't get me started on the enigmatic River Song...... I will keep watching just to find out what is up with that!

I finally sat through the two parter, and found it to be absolutely dreadful. Davies managed to completely undermine the works of all the writers from the Pertwee era on through to the end of the series. The portrayal of the Timelords was a sheer disgrace! (And I've had many a problem with this supposed 'time war')
Anyone thinking this was good should watch 'Terror of the Autons' and see the Master the way the great Roger Delgado created him -- a genius who exploited others, and not an insane madman.

I wish that they had not portrayed the TimeLords at all. Sometimes it is better to hear about a person (or people) and never see them at all.

For my money, the best portrayal of The Master was the 30 seconds or so that Derek Jacobi got before he regenerated (in Utopia). Now that was The Master!

Last Sunday, a flock of high school girls popped up at the local mall here with a 6 foot cardboard Tardis. They put it up in the middle of the mall and jumped out of its doors at people walking by it. Then they ran it up and down the escalators and let people take cell phone pictures of it. . .
