View Full Version : What I Hate about Farscape

Well...hate may be a strong word, dislike may be a more fitting term. I love Farscape more than any show ever, but nothing is perfect. Since we always talk about the positive aspects of Farscape, I thought it would be interesting to discuss what we found lacking in Farscape.
IMHO, I though the musical score at times was rather weak and a few times bordering on down-right cheesy. I just think the show could have been much better if it had a score similar to that of Firefly fueling the drama.
What aspects of Farscape did you guys/gals find weak or in need of a tune-up for the new webisodes?

Hello. :)
I think it is really vital to like the score of anything you watch.
Lucky for me - I loved the score of Farscape! I even bought the soundtrack :)
Out of curiousity, what kind of feel and tone would you have liked to of headr in Farscape scores? Firefly had a western feel to it which reflected the whole western style directing.
I love that cheesy music they play in Scratch N Sniff - the one in the club, lol - now that is pure cheesy but it gets me wiggling everytime!
P.S I write piano score :) I just did one for Atlantis - but I think I will do one for Farscape sometime. I'll Link it here - and see what you guys think of it :)
Good daye Scapers! :)

Never noticed it really. I rather liked the cheese-factor of the Scratch and Sniff music...especially at the very end of the show. It stuck with me forever, the two of them bickering away at the door leaving Pilot's Den,Pilot is STILL totally disgusted, and then that music carries right through to the credits!
BUT...my all time faveorite music is in Nerve, when John and Chiana are at the refreshment bar place and that smarmy looking older dude with the litttle bellmans hat on is at the bar with John. Now that music,as weird as it is,when you listen to progression and regression of it over and over...it REALLY sticks and fits.
I honestly can't even remember any other music. Other than the three different opening Farscape music pieces and as primitive and cool as Season one's was, the later version with that Romanian choir in the background doing the chorus or interlude part was WAY beyond cool...it was creepy and hot and foreign as all get out. I LOVED it. Loved the original, but the romanianian choir sent it to a whole different place, must have been tormented space.

1. They cancelled it! That's what I hate most, it gives me withdrawal syndrom and now I'm forced to watch crap instead...
2. mmm Scorpius had a girl-friend, I was jealous...
3. They killed Crais at the end of season 3, I was depressed after that...
4. I don't understand it all, it has helped me improve my English but I don't get all the slang and cultural references Crichton uses often.
But those are details, all in all, I love everything (except Crais death)

no offense intended FabiennelovesScorpy.
I hate that Farscape was cancelled. Otherwise I love everything about Farscape.
It was sad that Crais and Talyn died, but it was so,.... inspiring.... that Crais sacrificed himself for the others.
(After 3 seasons of Crais moving from "an insane military commander" to just a questionable [could he be trusted] pain in the eema.)

True, Firefly had that "westerny" feel to it at times, but I'm talking more about the dramatic portions when they used a real subtle, haunting piano in the background especially scenes when river and simon had moments together.

HAHAHHA! "What I hate about Farscape - they cancelled it" lol True. And now you are forced to watch crap - lol so true. Do you watch Stargate? If not, try that! After Stargate finished, I had nothing. And only untill recently I watched Farscape! I am a newbie!!
You fancy Scorpy? Now that is weird, but hey it's good to be different. DO you like Harvey?
Cheesy means um...like not amazing and wonderful but not crap either - just quirky.
Ah yes - I loved the poignant piano music between River and Simon. There is some haunting piano music in Farscape - I have it. If you want, maybe I can send yout them...

I LOVE a Frech or German person's viewpoint or the points they have missed. Think of all the points between the French I would miss. Alot going on just there.
Yes,you are not the only one who found Scorpius indeed very sexy....and I doubt she was a REAL girlfriend. Scorpius needs no one. He used her and tossed her away. Ha to that "girlfriend"!
The withdrawal is hard, still is and I believe it may always will be. Buy all 4 seasons, all of them and you will never be lonely. They may be your best friend on certain days.
Ah yes,Crais. I was shocked, hurt but had a new found love for him. They were both renegades.always to run for their lives, what a heroic way to go. But sad. I truly dig a man without any qualms about what must be done. And Talyn's loyalty to Crais was without a doubt. I just wished Aeryn had given him a little kiss on the cheek before he did it. But,she gave him the cheek slap/hold that may have been a Peacekeeper admiration sign.
I believe the most arresting moment of that episode was after Crais and Talyn starburst and the command carrier was imploding into itself was the scene of Scorpius on those stairs, with all that water running down it. He would take a step or two up and then stop and look back for a long moment...it was arresting. Shock.Intense. Wowed me like all get out.
I really feel bad for those from other countries that missed the slang and cultural references. You have missed ALOT and I mean ALOT. I'm telling you, even being an American I had to listen hard and fast and sometimes stop the DVD and re-listen more than once to understand the words,or what was meant. There were dual meanings and references forward and backward too. A very complicated show to watch. And still,no matter HOW many times I do watch them I still see and hear more than I did previously. Good stuff.
LOVE the interest in "cheesy"..hahahaha! don't we have the weirdest words for things, and so many different meanings per word too.

Oh, I know Stargate, it's just 10 levels below Farscape in terms of originality, stories and sexy aliens... Atlantis is worse... :( but when I catch it on Tv, hell, I watch it, in France, we're not known for the popularity of science-fiction on tv, Star Trek TNG was broadcasted here ten years after it began, no collectibles anywhere, had to cross the border to shop for tapes in Germany (hopefully, they had it in English in a remote little shop, my German is even worse than my English).
I first watched Farscape with tapes I had ordered in GB, no subtitles in English, of course, no subtitles in French, sometimes it was like pedaling in the sauerkraut! The one who gave me the worst problems of comprehension was Crichton, not the australian or Brit accents but he talks very quickly as soon as he's in "crazy" mode and add so many expressions or cultural references that I must have felt like a Sebacean and thought he was total farbot.
You explain cheesy with quirky. Fine, but I've looked in my big harrap's dictonary and quirky isn't in it either. Cheesy... pfffff... Now I watch Farscape on dvd, (got the two last seasons to buy), so I can watch it in French, but sometimes, it's badly translated :( . Remember the first episode in season 2? Crichton told d'Argo he couldn't break a wind (now I know it means fart), but in Fench they translated without giving the signification, I wonder if the traducer had understood the joke or given a damn about it.
Yes, I do find Scorpius absolutely sexy, I'd dream to be interrogated by him... but after all, I'm not the only one (alas!!!) ask Braca, lolllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll... I'm totally nuts with Scorpius, like Harvey too, not as much, his taste with shirts is discutable.

I don't miss all the slang, because I've learned my slang with Andy Sipowicz (NYPD Blue), what I miss most are some of the cultural references, now, with the dvds, at least, I can put the subtitles in English and enquire afterwards.
And Scorpy on the stairs with the falling water, oh he was so yummy!!!

thank you 00Robin --that is what I was getting at before: Crais' sacrifice made us see him differently.
It does go back to John telling Aeryn "you can be more".
Crais gave his life so that the others could make their escape, most
of us never expected Crais to do anything like that.

I wonder if Crais had not sacrifice himself only to save Aeryn's ass, because he was so obviously in love with her and knowing she'd prefer Crichton, no matter what. He wouldn't have done that for the others, he was too selfish, I kind of prefered him that way, selfish, arrogant, he was much more to my taste. Oh well, I'll always have Scorpius :D , at least, he doesn't fall into the romantic booby trap.

How about some of the earlier Crichtonisms? There were really good ones (which by far outnumbered the bad) such as the reference to Degobah from I, ET, but there were some of the southern references (I can't remember a specific instance) that were just plain silly.

I think Crais had strong feelings for Aeryn but I don't think it was love. She was the only near to friend he had except Talon.
If I was Crais I would have done the same thing. At that moment when he decided to sacrifice himself was down to all the things that had happened to him. He was a commander, a peacekeeper and that was all he knew. Then Scorpy and John came along, both who had a huge imapct on change in Crais's life.
He had been humiliated, discharged from his whole world and all he had was Talon. Then when he went back he met that tech women who he was in love with - and I think while he was away with Talon etc..and with Aeryn and John on Talon he became emotive and he understood that his previous life was superficial and empty.
Nothing left for him, so him having that peacekeeper spirit - he knew the best way he wanted to go was this great sacrifice.
He knew Talon would be greatly dangerous if put in the wrong hands, he knew no-one could really tame Talon, not even Moya - and this is why Talon was created - for this great moment in time. We all have a purpose in life and we either cower away and live like a chicken or we run into the fire and and live like a lion, rofl - that was stupid btu I think I put my view across - lol.... I think. HAHAHA!

Nope,I don't believe that sounded stupid at all. They had taken away Talyn's beauty of his differences from other Leviathans, his guns, and it certainly was not Talyn's fault the Peacekeepers bred a ship with an an incapability to grow out of his inappropriate behaviours at times and he was dangerous. But Crais let him use that last danger he had to destroy all that Crais had lost himself and free them both to the peace they both deserved and needed together. I viewed it as honourable. But I know my mouth was hanging open.not beleieving what was unfolded and then what actually happened I really thought Crais maybe somehow escaped. But the, pondering that I don't know if I would have accepted that. I accepted them both gone together and the bravery of them.

Gotta agree with you about Stargate. I know there are plenty of "fans" for it, but I would call that show cheesy and not cheesy as in quirky,I mean cheesy as in hoo-wa! yuck, pukey, with a flip of my hand to flick it away.
Yes,even cheesy has many definitions. And Stargate,in the gate, out of the gat,in the gate, out of the gate... BORING! Same sets, same forests. Every planet has the same Canadian forest? My favorite(not)were the "aliens" that amounted to people with their faces painted blue or something with a blanket on. The women with a bonnet as a rakish afterthought with a blanket.
And the medieval village, same village same rooms, same books, always a library for Daniel, same books even. Sometimes it was shot from a different end of "the village" or the library,but...and I know, the show became expensive and more expensive as every show has.
Good God. Its looking more and more like reality TV everything. Its cheap,no expensive actors to be paid outlandish wages, just people who will take about any salary for the few monthes of work. And an hour show actually amounts to about 20 minutes of footage they repeat numerously again and again after each commercial. Whatever with that.
I'm sounding sarcastic and the show just wasn't my preference, and it was very popular to others.
Vala annoyed me to no end and WHY CB added that coy little head tilt to the character was even worse. I had a nagging suspiscion the directors or whoever really played her and BB down so as not to over shadow the original bunch.
Cameron Mitchell, the man who rarely said anything remotely interesting and when he did,it was for a moment. A MOMENT. Somtimes when he was mean to Vala it was pretty funny. But Vala was not funny. She always had this freshly new face lift look to me. Maybe it was the make-up.
Beau Bridges...he never WAS a fantastic actor nor did he ever play anything memorable in any other movie or program I recall. But I am sounding very down on Stargate, but I tried, and tried to watch it. I really did. The last season barely began to get somewhat interesting and then it was cancelled.
I must say they did get to wear alot of cool looking gear, but those Zat pistols, the snake looking things....no matter how cool what they did was,the look of them never matched the workings of them. No matter who carried them they looked cheesy to me. Dumb, dumb, dumb and not in the least looking formidible. An "S" shaped gun" They din't even look as though they were comfortable to hold and use.
Oh God,please don't rag me,its just my opinion. I WANTED to like Stargate but I found I liked the music and the way the gate looked better than any episodes plot. And the uniforms and gear all strapped all over them,I did like that.
Oh,Crichton's southernisms, well there were southern and when he used them they were actually pretty funny and very stupidly appropriate for whatever he was using them for. I'm not the BB and Crichton torch bearer,I'm just saying,he used them pretty well. Well,I thought he did anyway.
So Stargate lovers, it is just an opinion and I'm no pro-critique here. If you love the show, love it. I love the Flight of the Conchords. I'm sure there are plenty of you that don't. And Curb Your Enthusiasm, love it,I'll bet even more of you don't.

I agree with you about Stargate, not at 100%, but on many subjects. The fact that all planets look the same, (cheap) all aliens look humans (with too few exceptions, like Thor), at least, in Farscape, they have a lot of aliens that really look aliens! What's the point of watching scifi if the aliens look like your neighbor. pffff. Look at the Jaffas, humans with a tatoo on forehead and a cross in latex on the belly... :irked:
And Beau Bridges! I had already wondered why Ally McBeal would ever drool about that guy, can I say he's cheesy? The former general was cheesy too, no mivoncs...
And this was the only science-fiction serie we could see on the national channels for years! No Star Trek, no Farscape, no Babylon5, no BSG, just Stargate and be happy with that! So I watched it... without convictions, they had some good stories from time to time, but it's really far below Farscape.

Same. When it did happen, I had a surge of honour rush down my spine but at the same time I wished for them, mainly Talyn, to survive somehow. I love the whole idea of having a half good and half dangerous ship, extremely powerful weapon traveling the Universe.
Even in the next episode, I think, when they go to bury Talyn's ashes in the Sacred Space; I was thinking, "NOoo!" lol.
I have accepted it now, lol. :) Rest In PEace.

I love Stargate series 1-8. For so many reasons. But I won't go in to them here. If you want to know what I like about it message me!
But I do get your points on why you wouldn't like the show. Yes, Farscape is the most original show on TV ever! In fact, since I only just recently watched Farscape, I did notice many things taken from Farscape by the writers and placed into Stargate. And I did become slightly disheartened by the writers. BUt I still love Stargate, lol. O'Neill forever!

Some of the things I didn't like about farscape:
Crichton became this miserable, depressed person when in the earlier seasons he was much brighter and more fun. I would have liked to see him come back to that a little more.
Almost nothing was ever told about Stark, his people, or his past. Stark is my favorite character, so I'd like to know more about Baniks and Stark's past.
Season 4 was lacking in quality compared to other seasons. I don't know quite what was wrong or what was happening to the show, but something felt way off and it ended up being my least favorite season. Somehow the plots weren't quite as good and the characters seemed to lose some of who they were.
The first half of Season 4. The episodes just seemed to drag and I didn't feel satisfied plot-wise. I especially hated the episode 'Coup by Clam' and still exclude it when I re-watch the seasons in order.
Other than that, loved everything else about it. :)

Cheesy c'est quelque chose qui est moche, qui fait toc, voire ringuard. ;)
Sorry for the french speaking...
It's true that Farscape music could have been better in many episodes. The fake saxophone "sexy" music in Meltdown always makes me cringe a little bit.
