Roush Rant in Next Week's TV Guide
Date: 09/26/2002
From: ariaw2
Just got my TV Guide for next week and it has the following commentary by Matt Roush: "Does cable's Sci Fi Channel not understand its core audience - a group known for putting the fan in fanatic? Some of these people still haven't forgiven NBC for canceling the first Star Trek, in 1969. How does Sci Fi expect such ardent souls to react after it gave the fantastically entertaining Farscape the boot before it could film a promised fifth season? (The remainder of the fourth season resumes in January.) Yes, the show is expensive - it certainly looks it - but even if the ratings were flat, Farscape gave the network credibility, acclaim and prestige. Without it, Sci Fi is just another green-cheese merchant."
I couldn't agree more. Before Farscape, the only original programming on the Sci-Fi Channel was a slew of unoriginal and derivative "trapped-in-space" type movies. Canceling Farscape is the last straw. The Sci-Fi Channel throws crap shows at us like Black Scorpion and Lexx, and takes away quality shows like The Invisible Man and Farscape. TPTB at Sci-Fi probably expect fans to rant and rave a little but then just accept whatever new shows they choose to put on the air. I can no longer watch programming by a network that doesn't respect its fans and that is more interested in making money than quality programming. I'm boycotting the Sci-Fi Channel.
To get my sci-fi fix, I am going to give Fox's Firefly and John Doe a chance instead on Friday nights. Although the debut episodes were disappointing, they're better (as far as I'm concerned) than watching the Richard Dean Anderson star vehicle that Stargate SG-1 has become. That's the end of my rant.
Edit ... I also see that Matt mentioned this upcoming article here:
