Message from Barb:
Helooooooo Lil Scaper Drannits!
We need your help. We need to raise funds to get Lani Tupu, Gigi Edgely, and Paul Goddard to Atlanta for the 5th of Farscape Global Rally. Their appearance could help the cause greatly by getting them the necessary press as well as get these rallies the press they need to gain new fan support. I urge all Scapers to participate in this donation drive. All donations are goin to paying the air fare of the cast from Australia to Atlanta. Please help all you can every little bit helps even if its just 5 dollars.
From Caitlin R. Kiernan (NebariNixar):
"Earlier this week, Lani Tupu, Gigi Edgley, and Paul Goddard agreed to fly from Austraila and attend the evening portion of Atlanta's 5th of FARSCAPE rally on October 5th (see www.nebari.net/rally.html for details on Atlanta's rally). A local club, The Chamber, where the evening event is being held, is
providing hotel accomodations. Lani Tupu's stateside promoter, Allison Littleton, was certain that ADV, the company that distributes FARSCAPE on DVD, would provide airfare. But Thursday night, with only nine days to go
until the event and ads already placed in local papers, she was told they were unwilling to do so. The Atlanta rally and SaveFarscapeCentral are
hoping we can find scapers willing to donate what they can to offset the cost of Lani, Gigi, and Paul's airfare. We've set up a Paypal account and are asking you to please donate as little or as much as you can. If we could just get $35 from 100 people, we'd be in the clear! This is a tremendous opportunity for pro-FARSCAPE publicity. CNN is already planning to attend the
evening event. Remember, the cast members are willing to donate their time. All we need you to do is put up a little cash. A very few scapers can make a big difference in this situation!"
Please Scapers we need all of you to help...
You may donate to this fund 2 ways either click the email link below OR go to www.savefarscapecentral.com and click on the button that says pledge. We have an email popup window that will display Allison's email to us when you click the pledge button going up later in the day. Time is of the essence!

Thank you so much for all your help

Thanks for letting us know that! Donating right now!
This would also be great press..shows Skiffy we will spend money, shows other interested networks we are willing to fly our cast over here, that shows money!

I also suggest that everyone who is going to the con try to get ahold of as many news/media companies in the area. Tell them the story, and how global fans were willing to BUY the plane tickets for the cast members to get to the con. Some news company should bite on that.

I will donate more if essential.
Is there anyway that the airlines will reduce the fare in exchange for free publicity? "Red" has said that she had over 5 million hits on this forum alone. That has to be worth something. We are a marketer's dream come true.

I don't think there's much chance we won't make it in time, if people keep donating at the current rate. I assume there would be refunds if plans fall through. It's fairly simple to refund via PayPal.

Umm ... not to rain on your parade here, but ... that's what you think.
Actually, it can be rather hard doing refunds via PayPal.com as they still like to get their 'cut'.
FYI .... PayPal takes a small 'snip' out of each transaction.
So, if say I donate 1.00, then what is actually received at the other end is around 70 cents. That's why when you see the fund totals, a lot of them are ending in cents and NOT even dollars.
As someone who used PayPal for eBay, both buying and selling, I will tell you that when a refund is given, PayPal still keeps that money.
I suggest instead that if it falls through for any reason that:
1) The funds be kept to perhaps bring some of the cast over at a later date, closer to the airing of the New Ep's.
2) The funds simply be donated to the Cast and Crew's favorite charity.

If it doen't work out, please put it in our warchest for advertising.
While charitable contributions are a noble thing, that's not what
people are donating for. In addition, we'll need every penny in
January 2003 to get more publicity.

Here's the news as it stands on the Atlanta rally:
A lot of money is coming in. Much thanks to everyone. If you haven't donated yet and want to, there's still plenty of time. We need all the help we can get to make this the media event it has the potential to be. Please go to SaveFarscapeCentral (http://www.savefarscapecentral.com/index2.html) to pledge whatever you can afford and read the e-mail from Lani Tupu to the Atlanta rally team.
Oct. 4th: Lani Tupu, Gigi Edgely, and Paul Goddard are scheduled to appear Friday afternoon at Tower Records (3232 Peachtree Rd.), where they will sign for fans from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m.
Oct. 5th: All day Saturday, teams will be canvassing various sections of the Atlanta metro area, encouraging people to tune in for the final 11 episodes of Season Four, and to let Sci-Fi know we want Season Five.
Then, on Saturday evening, the cast members will again be present for signing and photographs at the rally party at The Chamber (just off Cheshire Bridge Rd.). Doors open at 10 p.m. Also, local darkwave cellist Diana Obscura will be playing two sets, and Chamber djs will be spinning late into the night. The Chamber has donated both the venue and hotel expenses for the cast. And yes, it is a fetish club. The cast has no objections. There will be a $5 door charge. The Saturday night event is 21 and over only, since alcohol will be served.
More news as it becomes avaiable.

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
I don't know who I need to contact, but I can provide three buddy passes on Delta Airlines. The only thing GiGi, Paul and Lani need do is pay the taxes on the tickets. Buddy passes are standby so they might have to leave earlier than they planned just to make sure they made it in time. Delta charges taxes per mile, so money would still be needed to cover the cost of taxes from Australia to the U.S. but the price is a lot less than a ticket.
This is not a joke, my husband is a pilot for them and he is willing to do this. Please have someone contact me ASAP so that I can FED EX tickets to them.

I posted this to the Advertising Fund thread and I'm going to post this here as well
I'm a lurker, and I've been trying to keep track of everything, trying to help out where I can, but I'm very concerned about accountability when it comes to the money that's being collected for the Cast Gas Money Fund. I'm really concerned because I see one person - Caitlin (?) who's calculation worked out to $3500 and then I see Barb saying that they need $6,000 but the information that was released that the promoter is going to put them up in hotels and pay for their food -> using the cover from that nights event to pay for the days they're going to be there -> and I'm reading that the autographs are going to be charged for..... and that the paypal money is going to Barb's account (cause I was wanting to go to the NY rally and that was name of the address I had to email to get information) and I don't even know barb's real name....
is anybody else really concerned about that? I mean, we keep talking about who's responsible and making sure our money is being used properly. And now, PKTechSquirrel is reporting that she's able to provide them with free flights. That's a lot of money for something that seems to be almost free for a couple of days in Atlanta, Georgia from all the information that's been released.
Why aren't we also having this talk with Save Farscape Central and the individuals that have charged themselves with collecting this money??
Am I the only person really concerned about this???
Bryn Conwy
09-28-2002, 11:56 PM
You're not wrong to be concerned about this Thian - there was a very similar discussion about this concerning other funds in another thread - however a couple of things were pointed out there that i think are kind of key:
Firstly, the donations people are making are completley their choice
Second if you are concerned, then get in touch with the person who has taken these responsiblities and chat/email/talk with them
Third, someone has to be in charge(or a group of people has to be in charge) for this event, and the entire campaign for that matter, there has to be a certain amount of organization for it to work/survive
There are other possible things that might help - anyone have any other ideas?
thian
09-29-2002, 12:07 AM
Bryn,
I agree, each person has a choice to make, whether or not they're going to contribute their money, and it's an individual choice.
I guess what I'm trying to do is figure out if my concerns are valid or not.
I would get in touch with Barb, but when I emailed her with regards to the NY Rally, I didn't even get a reply. Why should I think that I'm going to get an answer this time?
and I understand that somebody HAS to be in charge, but I guess I would feel much better about contributing my money if each of the individuals involved would all have THE SAME STORY. It seems like there are three people in charge of this thing, a Lisa Webster, Caitlin Kiernan, and Barb. If Caitlin and Barb both were saying the same thing in their pleas for donations to this fund, I would feel more secure sending my money to them.
Also, they're saying that this money is for tickets to get them here and that the lodging and food is going to be paid for by somebody other than the fans. it doesn't cost 6,000 dollars to fly from Australia to Atlanta from what I've seen and it seems like the money may be totally unneccesary since PKTechSquirrel seems to be able to help to get them to Georgia. AND they're going to be charging for autographs. If I know that the money from the autographs is going to go to the cast as a payment for coming all the way out, I'm cool with that, but, if it's going to pay for them being here, then why are we contributing so much money???
So, I guess that's my reply to all the valid points you were trying to make....
Thank you for validating my concerns.
Joymax
09-29-2002, 12:42 AM
forgive me for asking this...(especially if its written somewhere)
but why aren't autographs etc free?
do they normally charge for them?
i'm just thinking...if fans are paying for their tickets and all...well...?! (Not to mention everyone's rabid support here)
just asking if it is really necessary to use it as a profit-making situation...
Though, I suppose the money raised will go into a 'fund' of some sort?
;) ;)

I can only help them to Georgia if they are departing from a city in the U.S., NY for example. After checking into it, The airline that I posted (edited) does not fly from Australia. I do not know their itinerary, so it may be a moot point.

Just read what the cast will be charging for autographs and photos on another page at Atlanta appearances. . With airfare paid for by fans, how can the cast charge money to the contributors without which the cast would not be able to make any fees? If a contributor has proof of contributions, like PayPal receipt, shouldn't they get their photos and autographs free?
This would make sense. Charging contributors even to get into the cafe after the rally, would be shameful -- they already paid for the whole opportunity for the cast.
Any left over funds should go to the December advertisement in USA or other papers to raise FS awareness, not charity. People donated to help FS.

Quickly, I want to try to address some of the questions and concerns that people have raised in here.
The money that has been raised to bring Lani, Paul, and Gigi over from Australia is being managed by Lani Tupu's stateside rep. It's safe in a PayPal account. Money from the fund will also go to cover incidental expenses (food, for example), that the cast have while in Atlanta. The venue for Saturday night has been given to us free of charge and the club owner is paying for the casts' hotel rooms.
We have received an enormous amount of support from SaveFarscsapeCentral, who, working closely with Lani's representative, have facilitated most of the fund-raising. Without SaveFarscapeCentral, we probably would not be meeting our goal.
I am the co-coordinator of this event. Me. I'm handling the Saturday evening event and if you have any specific questions related to it, you need to contact me at Desvernine (Desvernine@aol.com). There's a ton of e-mail I haven't gotten to yet, but your questions will be answered. If you see "news" here posted about Saturday night by anyone but me, disregard it. I am trying to be extremely cautious about releasing updates, at the request of the cast and Lani's rep., to be sure the information I have is genuine. This causes delays and for that I apologize. In the following days, there will be important updates. I will post them. Also, if you see news on the Atlanta rally posted at SaveFarscapeCentral, it has been confirmed and is official, even if it hasn't been posted here.
Lisa Webster is the other Atlanta coordinator, and she's handling the Saturday daytime events. The rest, including the Tower Records appearance on Friday, is being handled directly by Lani's rep.
Yes, there will be fees for autographs. That money goes to the actors. If you've ever attended a large con, such as Dragon*Con or a Creation con, you'll know this situation is not unusual. I'm sorry I haven't gotten the exact rates up yet, but that's because they've not yet been passed along to me. I'll get them to you as soon as I can, promise. Other rates have been posted here, I know, but they are not official.
Obviously, when our funding from ADV didn't come through last week, we had to act fast to raise this sort of cash, and that means that there's been some confusion. But this is not a scam. This is an opportunity to gain extremely important press coverage for the cast and for the campaign to save the show. With CNN coverage, we'll reach far more people than a print ad. This will be money well spent.
We at the Atlanta rally ask for your continued patience, your understanding, and, if possible, your continued financial support. I am amazed at the positive reaction we've received and at the way the fans have pulled together to make this happen. And it is happening. We have made it happen. Not just Atlanta scapers, but scapers all around the world.

Since my name has been mentioned questioning the who/what/where/when I just wanted to clarify that Caitlin and I are coordinating, essentially, separate but equal things in Atlanta. Caitlin is 100% the final answer on the evening events. I am in charge of daytime events (see my page for these at http://www.atlantascapers.com/lisa/fifth.html ) and we are both working with the person who is coordinating the cast's trip to the US and verifying everything with her before it is released to the public. Ultimately, she, as the representative for these three actors, is in charge of where they go, what they do, and those sorts of things. She will, of course, be buying these plane tickets to get them from Australia, because that's what assistants do. In coordinating these Atlanta appearances Caitlin and I are, in essence, attempting to function as something we are not-- we do not organize conventions for a living, we do not promote evenings at night clubs, we do not gather people for Worthy Causes as our day jobs. We are fans of Farscape who happen to be working with a ton of other fans of Farscape to pull off something of a coup. :) We will do our level best to answer any and all questions you have, and please feel free to ask them of us. If you have a question for me in private, please email lisawebster1@yahoo.com If you have public concerns please post them here or wherever else you may encounter me out in the wilds of the 'net. If you frequent the irc.scifi.com #farscape channel, you may encounter both myself (LisaW) and Caitlin (NebariNixar) there. We may be occupied arranging things, but will do our best to answer your concerns as quickly as possible.
Also, as a caveat: if I say something about the evening event in trying to answer your question, please understand this is Not My Area. I will share what official info I know in order to help you, but it's not the Gospel unless it's from Caitlin.

I understand that the actors charge fees for autographs USUALLY, but this is not a con sponsored by industry. it is UNUSUAL. I think if someone sent in money, to make this dual opportunity for the actors (get fee$ and promote the show to save it), the contributor should get free autographs. I think it is the least that Lani, Paul and Gigi could do for their all expense paid trip on the generousity of fans. Fans have made this happen, and should get a perk from the actors.
NebariNixar
09-29-2002, 10:57 PM
Sparky - From the beginning, it was understood by the rally coordinators that the cast would be selling autographs, as they normally do at public appearances. This is something neither I nor any of the other organizers have control over or a say in. Nor, for that matter, a problem with. Turn the situation around. They're taking time out of their lives to come here, halfway around the world, and make themselves available for the press and fans. This isn't a vacation for them, after all; it's work. Speaking as someone who's spent a lot of time signing and giving interviews, it's hard work.
That said, a reward is being arranged for contributors who give $100 or more. Details will be posted tonight (any moment now, actually), at SaveFarscapeCentral (http://www.savefarscapecentral.com). If you want to know the details, you should check out the announcement on the website. Also, the cast is trying to arrange an online chat while here, for fans who cannot attend the event.
And that said, speaking personally, it is my sincere hope that people are giving money because they want to help save the show, not because they're looking for a "perk."

while ostensibly, this campaign is to save a show we love, practically, it's to keep some actors and production crew employed....as in, making mortgage payments, paying for kids' schooling, putting groceries in the fridge. these guys aren't the cast of Friends, folks. they don't bring down a million bucks an ep.
you don't want to donate? don't. nobody's got a pulse pistol to your head. you can make your contribution to the campaign with your equally valuable time and effort.
just keep something in mind though. this was Lani's idea. none of them had to do this. they're offering because it could help us help them.

This is only personal opinion mind you but i have a few thoughts...
As to the charging for autographs...one of the nights in chat Anth was asked if he was doing any other jobs or if he was going to try and stay available for the show...he politly remimded us that he had a mortgage to pay so of course he was looking into other jobs, but the second he got the word that the show was back on(barring no contractual problems) he would be back
ALL of the rest of the cast is in the same boat, they have bills to pay, and some like Ben have a family to support...so for some of them to take the time to come over(without getting at all paid mind you) to help us save the show i think is extremely generous of them - on that note i don't have a problem at all with having to pay for autographs...personally it seems like the least we could do to say thanks to em
well i guess that ended up being all my thoughts for now :)

Thanks, Bryn.
Just some semi-generic not "official statements" from me. My thoughts from my head as a person to you guys with concerns. Normally at a convention you know months ahead of time that you'll be attending as a guest. If you're attending as a guest sometimes you get appearance fees, or perks like travel, accomodations, etc. This is not a convention. We aren't paying these guys an appearance fee. We are asking for _days_ of their effort to come here for our party and events. Obviously, they are planning on coming. Because they want to see fans, yes. But also because by fans buying autographed pictures, etc. they can make some side cash to tide them over until they get new jobs, or until Farscape *cross fingers* is back in production. Does anybody here actually expect people to fly from Australia simply because we asked them to and we're sending them a ticket? Be rational here. I can't send someone money-- we'll pick Britney Spears-- and ask her to come see me. It doesn't work that way. :) I have to have something to offer to Britney to get her interested and to make it worth her leaving whereever she is and what she is doing. To me, this is a huge duh. I can't really fathom people objecting to autograph signings. :)

Information cross posted from Urgent Message to Atlanta Rally Donors thread, http://www.wdsection.com/community/showthread.php?s=&threadid=4019
It has come to the attention of the organizers of the Oct. 5th rally in Atlanta that a few people may have mistakenly donated funds to Save Farscape's "Beyond Hope" fund (wdsection) thinking they were, in fact, making donations towards the "gas money" fund to get Lani, Gigi, and Paul to Atlanta.
These are, of course, two separate funds with separate (though ultimately complimentary) goals.
If you have mistakenly sent a donation to the Farscape: Beyond Hope fund with the intention of contributing to the Cast Gas fund, please email me at deneba@attbi.com I will make arrangements to either refund your contribution, or forward it directly to the Cast Gas fund (which would be faster and MUCH easier :D ) I'll copy the receipt back to the original donor as validation.
Let's make this event successful by ensuring the funds go to the intended recipient. And Atlanta folk? Give those wonderful people hugs for the rest of us Scapers not lucky enough to be there.
D.
We've already won the war. Now we just need to help the rest of the world realize it.

Here's the latest Barb news:
GREAT NEWS WE'RE GETTING CLOSE!
I've been in meetings all day long with my business and still setting up things on our end with Allison for the Cast appearances with Lani, Gigi, and Paul.
I just have a few things to inform everyone of...
1. We have taken in about 5000 dollars but we're still substantially
below the mark for tickes and transport necessary to get them all the events we have planned. SO KEEP CONTRIBUTING and passing the word. It is SO important to make this work...because we also are hoping to bring more cast for more events in the States in the future.
2. For every Scaper that contributes $100 or more an exclusive Photo
(signed by all cast appearing) from the gathering in Atlanta will be sent to you. For all those contributing less we have set up many ways to participate in some way over the net including live webcasts, chats, frequently update photos, and other activites thru our site at www.savefarscapecentral.com
3. For those that can not attend The Chamber 5th of Farscape Afterparty (2115 Faulkner Rd Atlanta Ga.) we have provided another signing event Friday October 4th from 5PM to 7PM at Tower Records (3232 Peachtree Road, Atlanta Ga.)
We hope to see you ALL at one of these events and if you can not make it we hope to see you on the web!
Remember Please continue to contribute. Help us Help them and help the Save Farscape cause as well.
Sincerely
PK Barbarella

I have a question. In the first post to this thread it stated that if 100 people gave $35.00 that would put them over the top. 100X$35.00=$3500.00. So if $5000.00 has been collected we should have met the goal. Did someone error with the original estimate?
Also what is the amount we need to get to? If we are close, knowing what we need might encourage fence straddlers to donate. Thanks.

hey, folks! A quick check on Orbitz shows that a round trip from Atlanta to Sydney (it wouldn't let me do Sydney to Atlanta but I figure that it's about the same cost....) with this short notice prices out at about $5K per person!
I am now checking out if frequent flyer miles can be donated and/or exchanged.

Hello,
I don't know about the specific numbers for you, but I do know that in general the funds for tickets from Sydney to Atlanta run about $2k per person as you'll find on several online travel sites. That's a total of approx. $6k which is what Barb means by "close" in her update. When they get to the States there will also be incidental costs like taxis, van rental, etc. but the main thing is the airfare. :)
Also, I would like to stress that only give $ if you are comfortable giving. We don't want anybody tapping into their 401k here. In case you didn't see it, there will be a signed/numbered limited edition photo for contributors at the $100 level. Again, you can pledge through SaveFarscapeCentral.com's fund, or you can send direct PayPal donations to farscapebreakfast@yahoo.com which goes to the person buying the plane tickets.
Thanks!
Lisa

There should be an official announcement regarding the status of the Atlanta events along later today. Meanwhile, in case you didn't hear at the #Farscape irc chat last night, the tickets have been purchased and Gigi, Lani, and Paul are on their way. More details to come.

I want to apologize for the fact that no announcement was made yesterday. Things are getting a little hectic as time grows short. For the latest news, please go to Nebari.Net (http://www.nebari.net/rally.html) or address specific questions to me at Desvernine@aol.com (please note that I have quite a backlog of e-mail at this point and I'll get to your question ASAP).
Thanks! :aok:
