View Full Version : New FARSCAPE comics coming from BOOM! Studios
http://forum.newsarama.com/showthread.php?p=5440271&posted=1#post5440271
Press Release
It's about frelling time. Fans have a reason to celebrate as FARSCAPE returns in a brand new comic series thanks to a just-inked licensing agreement between The Jim Henson Company and BOOM! Studios. Widely recognized as one of the greatest sci-fi series in television history, the multi-award-winning FARSCAPE will make its comic book debut later this year.
BOOM! Studios is set to publish a series of four-issue mini-series which will explore and expand the stories of FARSCAPE. Each four-issue series will be collected into subsequent trade-paperback editions. The series will be written and drawn by an as-yet-unannounced creative team.
"FARSCAPE took science fiction television to a new level and ushered in a whole host of shows that wouldn't have been possible without FARSCAPE's pioneering. As a long-time 'Scaper', I am incredibly excited to mine the dense universe of FARSCAPE for new stories and adventures in comic book form," said BOOM! Marketing and Sales Director, Chip Mosher. "I watched the show as it came out, I bought the DVDs the day they hit the shelves, and I can't frelling wait to publish these comics!"
The FARSCAPE comic book series will be taking advantage of the upcoming webisodes to be produced by The Jim Henson Company in association with RHI Entertainment for SCIFI.COM. The webisode series will re-unite FARSCAPE executive producer Brian Henson with creator Rockne S. O'Bannon.
"It's so exciting to work with BOOM! Studios on this project knowing that their team members are true fans of the show," said Brian Henson, co-CEO of The Jim Henson Company and executive producer of the original Farscape television series. "Working with one of our favorite comic publishers, we know our loyal supporters will enjoy these original adventures while new audiences will have a fantastic introduction to the FARSCAPE universe."
Debuting on the SCI-FI Channel in 1998, FARSCAPE follows the adventures of Astronaut John Crichton as a freak accident during an experimental space mission catapults him across a thousand galaxies to an alien battlefield. Suddenly, he's trapped among alien creatures wielding deadly technology - a battle that 20th century sci-fi pop culture never prepared him for. Hunted by a merciless military race, Crichton begins his quest for home from a distant galaxy.
A groundbreaking award-winning sci-fi production, FARSCAPE has become a global favorite. Named by TV Guide as one of television's "Best Cult Shows Ever" and most recently named by EMPIRE Magazine as one of the "50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time," FARSCAPE is known for the overwhelming fan-based campaign that led to its miniseries production. The show has continued to find new audiences as it airs in syndication and is available on DVD around the world.

Holy sweet frelling dren!
Looks set between the Peacekeeper Wars and the new webisodes, hopefully bridging a gap between them. I know for sure I'll be getting these.
As an aside, I have the two original Farscape comics (Wartorn, by Wildstorm) and they have truly amazing artwork and a great storyline. The main storyline in these two comics alone is large and complex enough to take up a full episode.
I'm not sure I like the idea of Rygel with a large gun on the first of the two covers, but then they are "not final".

Rygel fought the Charrids with a big frelling gun in Infinite Possibilities. So this isn't an entirely new departure for him. ;)
Where do I sign up to buy one?

So far as I can tell, there's no release date yet for the first issue. However you should be able to pick it up at any local comic book shops when its released. Depending on its success and how well BOOM! Studios handles publicity and publication, you may be able to find the trade paperbacks (basically books that collect the full mini-series in one volume) in some of the big chain bookstores.
Most comics are also available to buy online on Amazon or on a website like Things From Another World.

Just read this con report at Comic Book Resources (http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=16101).
The panel saved the biggest announcement for last; Boom! will be producing comic books based on the cult favorite television show "Farscape." Waid showed admirable restraint, as he clearly had a big name attached to the book that he knew the audience would love, but could not reveal it at this time. "Think Joss Whedon writing 'Buffy' comics. That's what this will be to 'Farscape,'" said Waid. According to Mosher, the series will be released "before the end of year, all around the world."
A big name? Like Joss Whedon writing Buffy comic? Who could that be????

I *love* the cover with all the characters on it. The other one (John, Aeryn, Chiana and Rygel) not so much.
In any case, I think this will definitely act as a stop-gap between the Peacekeeper Wars and the new webisodes, and because of this I'm feeling much more inclined towards the webisodes.
I was afraid that the webisodes would have very little to do with the Farscape we all know and love, instead being more of a Farscape - The Next Generation, where Crichton has his own Command Carrier and goes round shooting/sleeping with all sorts of aliens. But at least now we've got a bridge. We know that, even if the webisodes are drastically different, they should explain that in the comics. If they can't get all the actors back then they'll probably explain it in the comics (Rygel died heroically whilst Chiana got depressed and ate herself to death - I should sig that).
Plus - it's a greater indication that the webisodes will be A BIG THING and that they're definitely looking at a future for Farscape. This is an investment. Sci-Fi and Henson know we'd watch the mini anyway and know that it'll get the viewers. Why else do a comic if they weren't looking at the bigger picture?
In any case, I should mention that I'll be getting all these individually as soon as possible, and then I'll probably still get the collection (if they do one).
Make sure to check out the henson podcast http://www.henson.com/podcast.php for an interview with BOOM! Studios Matt Gagnon about the Farscape comics :D

Obviously, Whedon created Buffy...so the "big name" must be someone who worked on Farscape, right? Rockne S. O'Bannon maybe? Or David Kemper?

Do you think it will be about the Nebari for at least a sub-plot, they never got to explain how they fixed that X.X I was deeply upset
Mike@Pilots Chamber
04-27-2008, 04:43 AM
I dunno. Now that the Scarrans have been dealt with, a lot of people think that the Nebari should be the next major foe.
scaper4eva
04-27-2008, 06:47 AM
The potential power of the nebari has never been really assessed ever since PK Tech girl ... nevermind the brainwashing ... there plenty of ways to go with that one.
Nicola
04-27-2008, 07:34 AM
I think you mean "Durka Returns". (PK Tech Girl introduced Gilina. ;) )
I agree - the Nebari have the possibility of being a very formidable opponent - with that creepy certainty that everything they do to you is in your own best interests.
Yikes.
scaper4eva
04-27-2008, 08:38 AM
Oops sorry ... I meant that we know from hindsight that it was the nebari who destroyed the zelbinion in 'PK Tech Girl'... from 'Durka Returns'.
So they also had have formidable milatary tech aswell as mind control to bring down the legendary peacekeeper ship.
Mike@Pilots Chamber
04-27-2008, 11:55 AM
Well, according to Salis in Durka Returns, the ship that destroyed the Zelbinnion was one of their standard ships. Not even a large evil carrier-of-doom-esque sort of ship. And the Zelbinnion was a HUGE command carrier, a legend of it's time.
In any case, away from the Nebari... definitely looking forward to these comics. It's sorta strange that two of my favourite shows are getting renewed, with comics used to get interest in them first (ReBoot being the other show).

Most likely, ah I can't wait till OzScape, (Aussie here who just wishes there was more THIS year *sigh*) It will be my first convention and I'll get there one way or another.
Back to the Comic thing topic:
Nebari was a good sub-plot, I would really like to with that, and the Grayza pregnancy I would like some answers about, is it John's? Thats what my mother thinks, and with TV (especially Farscape) she had a sixth sense about it

Hell Yeah! This is really great news, can't wait for the comics/webisodes.
Maybe it wouldn't work but I'd like to see the role of Earth being brought forward a little in the comics/webisodes. I wouldn't want it turn into Star Trek but the political situation has obviously changed alot since the events of the PK wars.
There could be a lot of intersting things done with Earth - perhaps with Chricton and co trying to bring in with the rest of the Galaxy, offering the WH technology to travel the distance between Earth and everybody else (which the PK/Scarran obviously wouldn't like).
Then there's the Farscape take on the social and political problems that we face, not to mention our more PK-esque tendencies and the obvious threats out there in the Farscape universe.
It'll be intersting to see where they go with it anyway.
p.s. woot, first post :D

I don't know for sure - but I am fairly confident that TPTB do not intend to go back to earth.
There was a reason that John Crichton said his goodbyes to his father from the moon. I was the whole symbolic 'You can't ever go home again.' thing that the writers had been hammering in since Terra Firma. Crichton has made his choice - which home he wants - Earth or Aeryn. And he choose Aeryn.
In addition - Crichton permanently sealed up the wormhole to earth to protect it. It just wouldn't make sense for him to reopen it and put it back in terrible danger just for his own gratification.
Plus - the Farscape PTB have making making social and political commentary on the show since the beginning - using metaphor. Which is a whole lot less preachy and (I find) more interesting then having Crichton et al arriving on earth and having to deal with whatever situation seems appropriate.
Mind you, I have a feeling that whatever happens in the webisodes and comic tie in - it will be quintessentially Farscape. And that will be enough for me. :)
Mike@Pilots Chamber
06-24-2008, 12:14 PM
I'm in agreeance with Nicola - I don't think Farscape would ever do Earth again. It has been John's goal, but he's outgrown it. He's made his home in the Uncharted Territories, aboard Moya with the rest of the crew. If you've read the Horizons fic by Rockne (the show's creator) that shows that, whilst it doesn't follow the Peacekeeper Wars, Crichton really is content where he is now.
As for wormholes to Earth - yes, they got rid of one. However, you have to wonder how wormholes work. This is how I see it. The wormhole network is like a maze, with multiple entrances and exits. You can go in through one wormhole and, depending on how you navigate whilst in there, pop out at any wormhole exit.
In this case it seems like John has closed the only exit to Earth. Perhaps. He's closed the one that was used in Unrealized Reality (and subsequently Kansas and Terra Firma), the same one used in Bad Timing.
However, is there another exit to Earth? Is the one closed the same that was used in Premiere? I'd imagine so. Also, we have to believe that the Eidolans got to Earth using a wormhole - did they use the same exit? Are there other wormhole exits within the solar system?
All completely derailing us from the topic. Anybody got any information on when these comics are due? Also, if there are comics, then Sci-Fi must be putting some SERIOUS effort into the webisodes.

I think this needs to be developed into something more at some point. Horizons was one of the coolest Farscape-related things I've ever read. I know it might be too short to be turned into a mini-series or even a comic but something must be done to turn it into canon.

Or at least spin interpretation of events so it becomes 'canon'. D'Argo's death for instance. And Rygel as 'midwife'. How else would you describe Rygel's contribution without spoiling the audience?

I'm thinking that it might be a good idea (if this has not already been discussed...I've been gone for awhile) to have a couple of organized campaigns to inform people that Farscape is back. I mean, we all know this, but I was at B&N the other day to buy a book and I mentioned Farscape coming back...no one had heard of this. I ended up lecturing to about 5 people on what had been happening with the show. It really put into perspective for me how many people had now heard of Farscape (from the tireless efforts of we fans) but also how many people had no clue what was going on. My professors used to tell me that for every one person who didn't know something, there were likely 20 others. If we can inform these fans (many of them likely new fans) by the time Farscape comes back in comic and web form...well, the numbers might amaze.

farscapewarrior - you sound like you're ready for the "I Have A Plan" section!
But yeah - whilst we're on it, what can be done to promote the comics? Is it worth finding out if Sci-Fi Channel is going to promote them in some way?

I will be hosting a Farscape Fan table at two conventions this August. One of which will be an Anime Convention. Organizing a promotional campaign for the the comics would be really useful for me.
So... yeah. Any big campaign ideas?

Hey yea I was going to post there, but recently it seems like everyone who is talking about the new Farscape (webisodes or comics) are in this forum more so than "I have a plan".
My main thought pattern was how to get the word to people who don't check sites like this often (or ever) and are not the con type either.
Those people would best be informed via news stories, blogs, and word of mouth from friends.
for anybody going to comic con this weekend, i would highly recommend going to the BOOM! Studios panel on Friday :)

BOOM! Studios announced today that Rockne O'Bannon will be writing a series of four-issue Farscape mini-series' comics that will be in continuity and will serve as "season 5" of Farscape (picking up immediately where The Peacekeeper Wars mini-series left off). My favorite quote from Rockne in the article : to my mind, those characters are still out there, and it's still a dangerous world in which they live. And they are still the characters and the personalities that they are, and it's not in them necessarily to sit still, on the front porch in their rocking chairs.

In my neck of the woods, BOOM! has mostly been known for their Warhammer comics. IIRC, Darkhorse has Buffy and Serenity. Dynamite has Battlestar Galactica and Painkiller Jane. Farscape would be similar in likely being one of BOOM!'s big-sellers, maybe their flagship comic perhaps even, which is good for them. :)

I'm afraid not. I suppose the webisodes will be filmed later, and the comics are going to be the introduction to the webisodes.

Thanks so much for the warm welcome, Jul. I'm glad the fans are responding so positively to what they've seen so far of the new comic series. This is an exciting time to be a Farscape fan (myself included). I hope you guys like my next few covers for the series too.
Unfortunately, I won't be at the Farscape convention next month since I wasn't invited but I'd love to add the event to my convention schedule in the future. I'm usually busy with a lot of projects for Star Trek and Star Wars and so on these days so I don't get to do as many cons as I like. But I'm always at Comic-Con in San Diego every year at least and I'll be in Dallas for Star Wars Fan Days II later this month on Oct. 25-26th though.

You can order the comics from Farscape Canada (http://farscapecanada.com/merch.shtml#comic). They ship internationally and as a bonus everyone gets a Farscape Canada Pen and Farscape keychain with your choice of character.
From what I have been told, this first issue has sold very well so the site is planning to offer the rest of the series as each issue is released. (Dunno if that includes another pen and/or keychain tho....)
P.S. Apparently Farscape Canada has sold out their stock of Cover B - but if you ask nicely they might just order in some more. ;)
Another outlet that's also available is the Forgotten Planet Shops in the UK and they can ship internationally: http://www.forbiddenplanet.co.uk/index.php

But at Forbidden Planet you have to put an order of a mininimum 5 GBP. TFAW (http://www.tfaw.com/Search?quick_sstring=Farscape&_results_sstype_search=titles) is much better place. But the best one is definitely Farscape Canada :)

By Keith R.A. DeCandido(Keith R.A. DeCandido)
Joe Corroney has posted a bunch of artwork on his blog, including his covers for the third issues of both Star Trek: The Last Generation and the Farscape comic I'm co-writing with Rockne O'Bannon. The art could be considered a spoiler, ... KRAD's Inaccurate Guide to Life -
