I'm asking this at every forum to which I'm a member, in an effort to get an idea of how much interest there is...

Who here would be interested in reading a book (or series of books) like this?

They focus on a planet inhabited by dragons. But, in addition to dragons, they also feature starships, other aliens, and other familiar science fiction elements. So, in the same book, there could be battles between dragon and dragon, ship and ship, dragon and ship...

The dragons of this planet are sentient--meaning, they live not only for the present, but are able to reflect on the past, plan for the future, and can override certain instinctual behaviors. Humans come to that world with a hope of setting up a colony, and the two species learn to coexist in peace and work together.

Interested?

dragons? regardless of aliens or spaceships; isn't that fantasy, rather than science fiction?

Not strictly.

And, unlike typical fantasy dragons, these don't have any real magical powers beyond telepathy and spitting fire, which is done with a scientific explanation.

Hmm, I think no mather how you paint it up, dragons are still fantastical whereas strictly speaking sci-fi is supposedly based on scientific possibilities. Not that we know too many blue vegetables that can speak and look human in form so in some ways Farscape is somewhat fantasy.

I agree with you scrape medic, but that being said, you can change the fantasy feel of dragons by the environment you put them in.

I would be interested in a book with that kind in twist to it.

Um, Dragon riders of Pern, Anne McCaffrey series anyone? This series started in 1988.

Anne's vision is different from Hansen's.

I would hope that Hansen's stories are different from McCaffrey's. Nonetheless, McCaffrey's books fit the criteria of the original question.

I'm not saying anything bad about Hansen's work, I'm glad to see more works in this subgenre.
