View Full Version : Bookmarks?

Recently, I saw a thread here about creating bookmarks. I thought this was a fantastic idea, and I'm ready to print out a stack of them and take them to the local library and Border's, and stick them in hundreds of books.

Has anyone designed any such bookmark?

Deanna T

That does sound like a good idea, I must say. A large number would have to be printed to make it worthwhile.

Question: I know that at my local library, when people return books and accidentally leave their bookmarks in them, the next reader who finds the bookmark usually places it in a box out the front of the library.

To avoid this happening, I think the bookmarks should either say "Feel free to keep this bookmark", or "Please leave this bookmark in this book for the next reader". What do you think would be best?

Single or double sided bookmarks? Colour or BnW?

I'm working on a couple of posters that could be converted into bookmarks, so I'll take a look at how that works out. Some bookmarks with RatScape's images would look good too, I think

All excellent ideas!

My favorite bookmark is actually a sticker i left the back on from Hot Topic. I took it home because I thought it was cool :) All it is is a shiny black background with "Hot Topic" on it in large letters :rollin:

I saw the idear of putting bookmarks in library books earlier on from one of the other groups. (she also was the little imp who suggested hiding FarScape fliers in a stack of Taken ones at their functions... tee hee) :lol

I know that a card can be made from any poster or pic cause I did experiments :goof: BuWahahahaha! My creations are up on Page 4 & 5 of my site:

The DarkSide of John Crichton Site (http://groups.msn.com/TheDarkSideofJohnCrichton/savefarscape.msnw)

I looked at Office Depot and at Office Max. Max has excellent blank sticker sheets, magnet sheets & decals for windows & card stock :) I got the tshirt transfers from Depot though... slightly cheeper. For large numbers? Remember there will be 4 per card sheet (If you design it that way) ... that means that if you print 10 will you reap 40!!! Or print 25 and get 100! It can be Soooo much cheaper than fliers!

The librarian thing... that *is* a problem. But actually librarians like bookmarks. So my suggestion to you is ask her/him if you can just leave a stack of them on the counter. I asked the guy at Suncoast and he gladly said "yes." The cards I'm making will have GiGi's beautiful lips on the front and the show dates and Channel on the back...

http://groups.msn.com/TheDarkSideofJohnCrichton/savefarscape.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=409

Hey! Anybody out there know when the show dates are?

... aw frell, I'll probably have to start another thread to find out... :headbang:

Anyway the whole thing of leaving a stack of the cards/bookmarks on a counter is that anyone! can pick them up!!!!! That means kids, teenagers, peeps just along for the ride... anyone!!! So they don't have to actually open books looking :bounce: for the things and they can take as many as they want to give to their friends!!!! (Whenever I go to Hot Topic I always pick up extra free stuff for my friends. :D ) That reminds me... I'll ask Hot Topic if I can leave some there too. :bravo:

So there it is. My view is... Make it provocative! Make it free! and have it out where even peeps not taking it home will see it! :ewink:

nhfearme, that site of yours is a very nice resource. Your last pic of Chi's lips for the card, was that from Crichton kicks? That was a suprisingly powerful shot and I have no idea why. Good work.

Denblue, your bookmark rocks! Thanks for sharing.

That card may be a shot from Crichton Kicks, dunno. I just realized that those Chiana's Lips are by Exquisite Irony (http://groups.msn.com/TheDarkSideofJohnCrichton/savefarscape.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=444) :aok: I had said to him I was concerned about my Lexmark gobbling the ink & this was his solution. I think the shot in Crichton Kicks that is haunting is as Chiana travels up the the chain. She breathes and her eyes suddenly go white. It's that breathing thing that gets me

Elmonty,

The pulling of the 12/24 CR hasn't been verified yet - someone is trying to get some word from Harrison's Shoes as to if it has indeed been pulled - per info on the
Skiffy FAQ, however, it is still a go.

In the first week of the announcement, I was totally expecting DK to come into chat one day and say "Surprise! We were just joking! Just testing your loyalty!"

But now the possibilities of that happening seem to be dwindling...

Though if that had actually been the case, I would have probably flown up to Sydney and personally hit DK over the head with a large trout

I can't take the credit for denblue's work on the J & A card :spin:

Don't hesitate Sparky, to ask any store carrying FarScape merchandise if you can lay down a stack of bookmarks on their counter. I asked SunCoast & Block Buster and they both said "Yes" :aok:

SunCoast's manager made sure to tell me on my trip to pick up my 3.2 DVD that SunCoast is planning a FarScape cast signing at SunCoast stores! Call your local SunCoast for details :)

More Good News! The FWA now has a table at the Burbank Con! If you have quality handouts you want to donate for distribution at the Con, please coordinate with Deneba to drop them off... November 22, 23 & 24th. btw FWA needs volunteers :flee: for the other cons. Just drop a note to Deneba.

Some of us are going to leaflet at BBuster and malls, never thinking
to leave the bookmarks there too. We were gonna leave them at

No I haven't heard from Deneba, but with all the chatter on this board and images about, wouldn't we know if there's a problem? Dumb question maybe.

Regardless, I went to Kinko's yesterday and printed out some bookmarks and have already started leaving them about.

I'm just being cautious concerning materials for the cons. :angelgrin I've been busily reading all about rights and infringements :headbang:

This is a repost from the Copyright FAQ above:

http://www.watchfarscape.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=4042&pagenumber=1
Originally posted by cofax

What about fan-created artwork, like Ratscape's Wanted posters or my picture of Moya I use on my site?

Oddly enough, that doesn't really make a difference. Fan art, like fan fiction, is a "derivative work", and the rights the fannish-producers hold are subject to the original copyright-holder's interests. In other words, Henson actually has a legal right of some sort in my fan fiction and Ratscape's posters. We have a derivative interest.

The use of fan-created art makes it less obvious that we're infringing on someone else's copyright, but we're still doing it.

That said, my advisor said, "There is an extremely strong argument that the posters are "fair uses," at least as long as they are not being sold but are instead distributed freely."

So, we should be aware of this issue, and I think that if we want to run formal advertisements in newspapers and the like we should not even use fan art. However, freely-distributed flyers, posters, and buttons are probably fine, so long as we don't sell them. Non-commercial uses, remember?

Can we use the Farscape Font on our sites and on ads?

Fonts cannot be copyrighted. So anyone can use the Farscape font if they want. Just don't try to make it look like you're from Henson when you do.

Can we use "Save Farscape" in the Farscape Font?

So long as it's clearly disclaimed and evident that we are in no way associated with the actual show, probably fine. As a noncommercial site, we're not about to cause trademark dilution or customer confusion, which is one of the common complaints (like if you made a soda called "Coba Cola" and used the Coke font for the logo). <snip>

So… we can use *no Pics* of FarScape at the con. There is also a set of rules for the con, if I can find it again I'll post it here post haste, that says not to take anything that will take revenues from the actors or the con. That the actors only make money on the Pics they sell when they sign. I don't know what that means, 'cause both cons I went to I had to buy Pics from the tables to take in and have signed by the actors. That can be dicey when you have to run :flee: and trust someone to hold your  place in line while getting the thing... or risk that the line will move faster than the cashier serving you  … arg! :jedi: =deep breaths= <sigh>

The 'drawn by ratscape' Chiana bookmark is fine as long as we're giving it away. I have permission from Mark to use his image. :aok: so, the GothScape card I made is ok too.

Other samples are in the "I Am FarScape" Card thread. Just don't use wormboy... I got him off the net as an example. :lol btw the "I Am FarScape" cards are easy to make. Just upload your photo and write "I Am FarScape" on it. A little show info & you're ready to go. :D

Word is Evil. (Sorry Bill Gates, please don't come after me.) Never forget this. That said, tables might work. Try this:

- Save the image.
- Decide how many you want on a page. (Remember that since these are jpgs they will be at 72 dpi, which won't look as great when you print as they do on screen -- you'll want to shrink 'em down a bit.) Then start Word, go to Page Setup to set the page size and orientation, and insert a table with the correct number of rows/columns.
- Position your cursor in the first cell of your table. From the Insert menu, choose Picture/From File. Browse to find the image file you saved. Select it, then click Insert.
- To get the picture the correct size, click to select it, then go to the Format menu and select Picture.
- Click the Layout tab. Make sure In Line With Text is selected.
- Click the Size tab. You can either select your dimensions directly, or scale it to a percentage of the original. To ensure that the image doesn't get warped, be sure to select the Lock Aspect Ratio check box.
- Click OK. Your image should now be at the size you want.
- Repeat as necessary.

(Edited to add: You may not need to worry about the sizing -- Word may take care of it automatically. But just in case.)

I hope this is (a) comprehensible and (b) not insulting to anyone's intelligence!

That should work. If it doesn't, email me (robin_marwick@hotmail.com) and I'll see what I can do to help!
