This brief is from page 1D of today's (11/26/02) USA Today ...

What's a Nielsen?

Nearly half (45%) of TV viewers have no idea what a "Nielsen family" is, and 10% believe the phrase was a '50s sitcom, according to a poll by cable arts channel Trio. November marks television's all-important "sweeps month," in which shows compete for viewers and live or die by Nielsen ratings. The ratings are determined by tabulations of the viewing habits of selected tube watchers. Of those polled by Trio, 67% do not believe program cancellations should not depend solely on Nielsen ratings.

I was a "Nielsen household" for a while, about 6 years ago. (Can't really call it a family, as I was living alone at the time.) I probably threw someone for a loop, given my eclectic TV viewing (Discovery, History Channel, Cartoon Network, CNN, Cartoon Network, and not one major network channel in sight).

I have only had the neilson opportunity twice and they just sent me the survey and a dollar. I hear that there are people that actually have boxes and do it for a long time.......is that true? If so I want a box!!!

They still do the boxes as far as I know, but I had the whole 'survey and a dollar' deal. Perhaps they only do the boxes in big city areas.

Looking back on my previous post, I seem to have put Cartoon Network down twice.

Must've been more tired than I thought...
