I just saw this on the Sci-Fi BB:

"Date: 11/29/2002
From: Gottobe_Kidden

There is a Scifi Channel article in today's Wall Street Journal, and the cancelation of Farscape and the internet screamings are referenced (albeit one paragraph)!!! Page A13.

Even at this stage of the game, it still matters. People have heard all of you, so keep it up!

FYI - this is my first post. I've been aboard in spirit(and with emails and letters) for awhile now. You all deserve a round of applause for your hard work. There are more peole out here than you could even imagine! "

Here's the link to the WSJ article:

http://sg.biz.yahoo.com/021129/72/358oz.html#Scene_1

The article is mostly about "Taken". Farscape is mentioned towards the end.

"But keeping the Sci Fi faithful happy is no easy task. Some of the channel's audience has taken to the Internet to blast the canceling of "Farscape," a series about an astronaut stuck on the far side of the universe with a bunch of renegades. There have also been complaints about Sci Fi Channel running movies such as "Field of Dreams" and "Cape Fear" that seem to have little in common with science fiction fare. "

SciFi's programming budget:

"Still, Sci-Fi is taking a sizable chance with "Taken." At $40 million, the cost of the miniseries represents almost 25% of Sci Fi's total 2002 programming budget of $208 million, according to media consulting firm Kagan World Media, which also estimates the channel's 2002 ad revenue to be about $179 million."

SciFi is hoping for a 3.0 rating with "Taken". I'll be curious to see the ratings for the show.

"Ms. Hammer defends these moves, saying the channel needs to be a "bit more accessible." While she doesn't want to ignore the channel's core following, she also knows this audience isn't enough to sustain growth. "We're experimenting and trying to target different audiences," she says, adding that the network has to be brought "a little more back to earth."

What a nice slap in the face. We watched this network faithfully, gave them their ratings gave the advertisers money but in the end we don't count for dren. So we're not "enough"? I understand they want more new viewers, I don't fault them for that, but completely turning your back on your original audience?Maybe someone more intelligent in the media world can educate me, but that last line has got me very worried.

"The 20-hour "Taken," executive-produced by Steven Spielberg at a cost of $40 million, looks at how alien abductions and government conspiracies impact three families over four generations. "

Uh, Mr. Spielberg, didn't we already see this? Back when it was called The X-Files ?

And here we have the gold-medal winner in the "Why Farscape Was Cancelled in 20 Words or Less" category:

"You don't want to be dependent on other peoples' content," says Michael Jackson .

Bleah.

On the positive, "I'm working on enhancing my Zhaan for the weekend" note, Farscape's cancellation was mentioned in the WSJ. Cool.

I'm X Filed OUT. Maybe If we don't watch "Taken", we won't get bamboozled. We are more intelligent than that. This sticking it out without FarScape is just getting to be too much!!!! I CAN'T Take ANYMORE OF THIS INFERNO knnow as SCI FI. Even FX was playing x frailing files. :fingers

There are days when I do just feel like writing TPTB at Skiffy and demanding "What part of the words 'Sci Fi Channel' do you not understand?"

I mean, the Gardening Channel has gardening. The Golf Channel has golf. The Food Network has food. The Movie Network has movies. The Sci Fi Channel has... no sci fi?

Yeah, that makes soooo much sense.

Another hint for the brain trust: the people who are "turned off by traditional sci fi" are probably not going to tune in to something called the Sci Fi Channel no matter HOW little sci fi it shows.

[/rant]

But I won't, because I know that it would be counterproductive and I am a calm and tactful person. Really. Most days.

But honestly...

"We're experimenting and trying to target different audiences," she says, adding that the network has to be brought "a little more back to earth."

I tried to think of something to say about that comment, but my mind is completely BOGGLED. The Sci-Fi Channel is really becoming an oxymoron.

Ah,well. Guess it's time to go write letters of love and support to Mr. Jackson and Ms. Hammer. :ewink:

Well if they gave farscape another season they might have been a little closer to earth.
They are looking for a new audience because they have frelling alienated themselves from the ones that made the station what it was.
