I am still waiting on information from NCN - four phone calls in three days and still no one has returned by call....

But I wanted to go ahead and put up what information I do have on some of the other movie slide companies.

I have talked to the lady at Regal Cinemas - which includes Edwards Cinemas, Regal Cinemas, and UA Theatres if your cities should contain any of these. This lady can be reached by 1-800-828-2828, ext. 8705. Although she told me she has never heard of Farscape, she will talk with anyone who calls from a city who is interested in getting an ad for a local theater. Cost depends on two things - the amount of screens in the theater and if the theater is a heavily populated one. Her direct quote was "could be several hundred dollars to several thousands depending on where they want the ad and how big the theater is". The only way to find out for your city is to call her directly and have her give your the information or transfer you to a salesman who will make out a plan for your group.

Being it's the holidays and we are pressed for time, I think it would be best to look into theaters that are in the malls themselves. These theaters tend to be smaller in number of screens, but still heavily attended.

Some of the movie slide ads are sold weekly or monthly - these are usually referred to as 'flights' and will differ quite dramatically in price.

So if your local Farscape group is interested in purchasing a movie slide, please call the lady at Regal Cinema (number above), tell her you're with the Save Farscape campaign and tell her what you would like to do and see if she can work with you on some sort of budget your group can afford.

Copies of slides that do not infringe on any copyrights can be found in this thread:

http://www.watchfarscape.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5232

Most of the slides will fit the specifications required by the companies for their slides.

Although the holidays would be the perfect time to advertise in the movies, we may be pressed for time to get them into the theaters by that time. However, don't forget that Farscape will be on for 11 weeks and we need ratings to be up high throughout that time, so slides during January and February will be very good also.

As soon as I get information back from NCN which has the AMC theaters, I will post it here on this thread.

What about National Amusements? I have a contact at the coporate headquaters.

If National Amusements handles the theaters in your area, then you need to contact:

Cinema Advertising International. You will find complete details and contact information at http://www.cinemaads.com or call 1-800-777-7543.

From what I understand National Amusement is situated basically in the Northeast. The cinemaads.com site will give you no prices, but if you call the 1-800 number, they will get back to you.

Explain what city you are in and just exactly what you want to do and they will work with you.

I have no idea about the prices charges by Cinema Advertising as they don't give out prices until they hear what you want to do.

Hi,

We in the San Francisco area have been very active in this regard. One of our members, out of his own pocket I might add, has already put the ad up in several theatres in the San Jose area for the month of December.

I'm working directly with Regal Cinemas rep in Los Angeles, Bob Bochicchio. You can contact him at:

310-849-2770
bob.bochicchio@regalcinemedia.com

I've collect money from other Scapers here to put an ad in the United Artist Theatre in Berkeley for Christmas week. It's only going to run about $150 for a seven screen theatre if you have the .jpg ready.

I called 1-800-727-3361 and left a message on the lead coordinator's (Sherry Harner, I think) voicemail. I didn't hear anything that afternoon, so late in the afternoon I e-mailed a request for info, giving city and theater.

I'm playing phone tag with the local rep in St. Louis now - so at least they ARE responding to some of us!

Here's a question: what sort of ad should be put up? Where do they get the information and what sort of image/file do you need?

If this is relatively cheap and can be done with the information we have already, I think it's a perfect opportunity.

rani23 - check out this thread:

http://www.watchfarscape.com/forums...=&threadid=5232

and it will give you an idea. Call your local theater and they may came give you a number that would be just for them. But some of the cost quoted for me have been staggering - for instance 1,000 theaters for $64,000 and then some have been incredibly low like Jeff found in San Francisco.

The best thing to do is call and see. I think if they get enough calls they will start responding in a more timely manner.

Try this link - don't know why the one above isn't working, but any of those ads fit the specs for most of the ad companies and can be sent to them as a jpg.

I think you could get the most bang for the buck with this. Hope this helps.

Are individual groups going to pay for these ads on their own? I looked into this possibility for Signature Theatres in Honolulu, but they only sell by the month and the cost was about $800/month for the most frequented theatre - steep for our small group.

Just curious how everyone else is planning on accomplish this.

Hope, that's what keeps me going.

Hi Ifly,

That means you are going to have to concentrate on the 2nd tier of movie theatres, that's all. We in San Francisco have looked into that too, in order to get the biggest bang for the buck.

The ChicagoScapers have found a similar thing for theaters in the Chicagoland area. Minimum no. of weeks is 4, and anywhere from $1,300 to $2,700 for four weeks depending on the size of the multiplex. However, the larger (17 to 21 theater multiplexes) expect about 100,000 "eyeballs" to visit. There's a 30 theater "gigaplex" which expects 187,000 attending for the four week period, but wants FOUR GRAND to run the slide show.

Of course, attendance depends on the popularity of the movies that will be playing.

Upcomingmovies.com indicates the following movies to be opening after mid-December (I'm only listing the movies that I expect to be popular):

12/18/02
Two Towers (Expect this to play for many weeks)

12/20/02
Gangs of New York (stars DiCaprio, made by Scorsese)
Two Weeks Notice (stars Sandra Bullock & Hugh Grant)
The Wild Thornberries (animated, based on the Nickolodeon series)

12/25/02
Catch Me If You Can (stars DiCaprio, Hanks, directed by Spielberg)
check it out here: http://movies.yahoo.com/shop?d=hp&cf=prev&id=1808403381
Pinnochio (starring that irrascible Roberto Begnini)
check it out here: http://movies.yahoo.com/shop?d=hp&cf=prev&id=1808405410

For a list of movies opening in January 2003, you can visit here:
http://movies.yahoo.com/upcoming/bydate/2003_jan/
It doesn't seem to be a very impressive list.

It should be noted that the following movies will likely enjoy pretty long runs, and will still be playing into January:
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
Die Another Day (the Bond movie)
Analyze That (the sequel to Analyze This)
Star Trek: Nemesis

I'm going to put a 9-week slide up at the Esquire beginning the last week of December. I'm meeting with the very nice rep on Sunday to sign the contract.

The Esquire has 7 screens (all I can afford).

If anyone wants to donate to move it to a larger theater, please let me know before 12:30 Sunday, 12/8.

Additional $1000 moves it to the Crestwood 10,
Additional $2000 moves it to the Creve Coeur 12,
Additional $3500 moves it to the West Olive 16 (top rated theater in metro area. This is where I'd REALLY like to have it!)

Wish we had more time to raise the funds :(

What happens if people donate and you don't make the total you need for the next level?

stlscape
12-06-2002, 01:37 PM
I've got to sign the contract and pay 4 weeks worth up front, so I've got to have cash or check(s) in hand before I sign. *If* I get less than the next level (in the next 48 hours), I'll return the cash/checks.

I really wasn't anticipating anyone but locals donating for this anyway.

Hi,

I've just faxed in the contract to Regal Cinema to run a slide ad for the week of 20Dec at the United Artist Berkeley 7, right next door to the Univ. California-Berkeley, in Berkeley, CA. Our contribution flow was light too, hence only being able to do it for a week. One of our members in San Jose, out of his own pocket has it running in about 4 or 5 theatres down that way for a month! Now that is putting his money where his mouth is!

Well I researched at the wrong level (talked to a regional/national account person). Sorry about that. Rats.

I'll need to start again on the local level as you have already found out. They suggested for individual local pricing, your people should call 1-800 724-MOVIE or
email the request to directsales@screenvision.com

If you have a city you are interested in, I can tell you what cinemas they handle. But its a really big list. For example in Cleveland they do Cinemark and Loews. To give you an example of the cost Cleveland (#17 in the country according to them) for a 4 week flight in 14 theatres - 162 screens would be $10K. To get more detailed, I'd need to contact someone above.

In Chicago KERASOTES THEATRES
SILVER CINEMAS, INC.
CINEMARK USA INC.
PMS OTHER
LOEWS CINEPLEX

In Detroit KERASOTES
SILVER CINEMAS, INC.
CINEMARK USA INC.
NATIONAL AMUSEMENTS
STAR THEATRES

Hope that helps. I think we're a little too poor here in the Cleveland group to do much of this kind of advertising - even if we picked a midlevel theatre.

I may try again tomorrow, if I can get my motivation back.

Seriously if Sci-fi/Henson had allowed us to spend in merchindize all we've spent in this campaign they would have gotten back their investment 10 fold by now.

Because this is such a last minute thing, I've got to get the slides to the rep before 12/12 for them to start running 12/27 for the minimum 9-week period, so I'm doing a simple one myself:

Black background, golden text. Lines are centered on the slide, in arial font, except for "Farscape" which is in Pritchard font.

Watch the series viewers and critics praise...

My NCN movie ad rep ROCKS!!!!!!

My NCN ad rep, Sally Hanson, is a majorly wonderful person!!! I had wanted to put a movie ad for Farscape at a 16-screen theater (which I later found out was the top-rated theater in the metro area.) Unfortunately, it was out of my price range, so I settled for a mid-range 7-screen theater. My rep, all on her own, contacted her boss to see if she could run my ads on 8 of the 16 screens at the top-rated theater for the same cost as the 7-screen mid-rated theater – and got permission to do so.

***FYI, she can also place movie ads nationwide***, so if you’re looking at a theater that uses NCN for its advertising, I’d recommend you contact my ad rep: Sally Hanson, (636) 391-1236, shanson@NCNinc.com . She’s really good about staying in touch, and met with me on a Sunday to sign the contract, to accommodate my schedule. (And yes, she took some loaner episodes home!)

You people rocks!

Adi *And the fans rose up and demanded a promise to be kept, an ending to be told, and the good book TV Guide will write "Farscape renewed for a final season.*

almost every major cities. Here in San Antonio, they have theaters as big as 24 screens down to 8 screens (the theater in the River Center Mall which is very popular).

All you have to do to find out about a theater in your city is contact Sally Henson at (636) 391-1236, shanson@NCNinc.com

If she can't handle it herself, she can put you with people who can.

Call and get prices, talk with your local group about perhaps financing part of it and present it to the FWA to see how much they can help with the cost.

These ads can run throughout January, February, March - as long as the new episodes are on.

It's a great way to advertise Farscape to large amounts of people at one time.

Also, check out this thread to see what a movie ad could look like:
