Important!
This thread has been growing in size at insane speed. Can't think why (except maybe that it's hilarious and fun and a project under development :D) ;) So if you just want the latest instructions, check this thread:
http://www.watchfarscape.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=8074

I will keep updating it with whatever else is discussed here. So if you have any suggestions/comments/remarks, please keep posting them here :) Or if you have something particularly urgent, pm me or email me at Tiriel@attbi.com :)

Heh. Boy, this is fun :D :D :D

Original post:

OK, at long last somebody managed out beat the crap outa me with repsect to insane ideas and the price goes to NYPinTA for the idea and PrincessSierra for the slogan :D :D :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

OK, here's the thing. You remember the Tabsco Sauce action? Well, the Crackers thing turned out to be a problem because of the Anthrax-scare.
But, with Bonnie claiming what they're really looking for are more female viewers, how about we choose a date and all female viewers send Ms Hammer their least favorate bra with a big "We SUPPORT FarScap" written all over it?
I'm sure if we also have a press-release, this is something that would get attention in the media! :D :D :D Besides, it's something to do with your old bra ;)

So I'll put up a little poll to see of there is enough interest (it realy only makes sense if we get a lot of people to do it)... but I kinda like the picture of Ms Bonnie sitting up to her eyebrows in bras :D :D :D :D

Love and Peace and The Right Kind Of Support ;)

I'm glad you started this thread. Do we want them to all arive on the same day? If so we'll need different mailing days depending on location.

Frell yeah!

I have like 5 I'd be willing to send out!

I'm not sure if we can pull this off, but I'd reckon that it would be perfect if we could time the sending such that they all arrive on the 21st... when the 4.22 airs in the US.
If we also send a press-release about this (LOL! "Farscape Women Show Their Support!" giggle) then we might get quite a bit of publicity for the very last show... on SFC!

I know I'd probably switch on to see what it's all about if I heard something like that in the news :D

So what do people think? Is there enough time to set this up? I reckon most people would have to send by Monday or Tuesday next week to get it to NYC in time, later for those in the larger Metropolitan areas.... Can we spread the word fast enough to get a big (giggle) wave with this?

Opinions? Suggestions?

Love and Peace and Good Support ;)

We should send them to Michael Jackson or Mark Stern too. Which guy is more important? Imagine the looks on their faces!

So does this mean you would be able to spot a Farscape fan by the way they...:bounce: while they're walking down the street?

Tiriel
03-11-2003, 03:30 PM
Maybe we should have the men send something in, too, like saying "We Stand Up For Our Farescape!"... just how they'll be able to write all that on a pill of Viagra I don't know, though :D :D :D :D

OK, no more caffeine! And I'm trying to keep my head out of the gutter now, too!
Remember, we are professional!

Phew, sorry, couldn't resist that one :D

Love and Peace and Lots Of Laughter :)

I think a flurry of bras in the corporate office of Skiffy would be a good-natured way to point out to Our Friend Bonnie that if Skiffy really wants to attract female viewers, renewing FS would be a start.

And I think the kids in the mailroom will get a kick out of it, too. :ewink:

It would also be nice to do something to point out that Ben is definately the sexiest guy on TV, and that he alone literally attracts women to Farscape :)

I stated this in the Dune thread but I thought I should post it here as well:

If your going to do this you could send them in a clear plastic bag and tape it closed. Then put an address and stamp stickers on the bag. This way everyone knows that the packages are not a threat. This is a great idea though, I wish I could see the look on Bonnie Hammer's face when Sci-Fi starts receiving those "packages". :D

So are we agreed on who to send them too? Just Bonnie, (poor Bonnie...) or to some of the fellas as well. Maybe both... cuz I have a pair of nice ones......... :rollin: :rollin: :rollin: Ha ha ha.. a pair of nice ones!!!
-ahem-
I mean, a few nice bras that I could send.
The boys should know how much we love our Farscape as well, and that we are here!!!

PS You flatter me Tiriel, but I have simply learned from the master!! :bounce:

i'm not saying anything as a member of the staff yet, but if you do decide to do this (hee), please make sure that the bras are new, or if not new than at least uber clean.

What ever happened to the PO Box or maybe for this someone else could coordinate. I keep seeing addresses for sponsors, Bonnie Hammer, etc..., yet I keep dreaming of someone holding on to bags full of letters and delivering them to Sci Fi personally.

I love this idea. We needed something to keep us motivated. This could be it. Great way to stick it to Bonnie after her comments about wanting female, mainstream viewers, not geeky fans of space shows.

Don't be a boob, women love Farscape :aok:

Brilliant! I'll do it if there's enough time. I would be sending it from Europe so it will take at least a week!? I'll find out at the post office! :rollin:

uisceboo
03-11-2003, 03:53 PM
One: just so we don't give the post office nightmares, either don't use underwire ones, or remove the underwires before mailing.

Two: this is just like throwing underwear on stage. Reminds me, in turn, of the Barenaked Ladies (when they perform "Pinch Me" ) and Tom Jones! Either is a wonderful stunt.

This IS a pulbicity stunt, and one that will make news. We should tip the press off1 They will LOVE it!

Me, I am going to find the hugest red-boa-trimmed monster I can find!

Tiriel
03-11-2003, 04:08 PM
Ashley, yeah, exactly, so I reckon everybody should check the USPS site to make sure they know when they have to mail their plastic bag <snicker>.

Yeah, a nice lazy, black one sounds good, I'll write with Gold-Lettering even :D Oh, and on the outside I suggest we also stick a little "Watch Farscape SFC Fri 8pm"... I'm sure the gentlemen handling the plastic bags will want to know what this is about ;)

Hey, Jades, are you up to write a press-release? Who does those things usually? You know my both thumbs are dyslexic, otherwise I'd try :D
Also, do you happen to know which the best address for Bonnie is?

And the press-release should go out beginning of the week as well, I'd reckon to give the press some time to mull over this...

Now this is something Howard Stern might take notice of. *snicker*

At any rate, I'm in. I've got a sister who works at Victoria's secret. I can get a discount. And I suggest sending a bra that is kind of ... "you" ... you know? Something that is your style, so they get a good cross-section.

And maybe enclose Bonnie's quote, and something from the show, too?

Rygel: Every time I think there's more to you than two pushed-up loomas and a corset, you disappoint me.
Chiana: From you, I'll take that as a compliment.

Chiana: Acid! (holds knife to Big Zhaan's throat) Okay. Try the other looma.
Big Zhaan: Very good little nixa. Most get burnt the first time. Okay, other looma...

Aeryn: Jirl Power!

John-in-Aeryn: They're here. They're right here. They've been here for a couple of arns and I just had...
Aeryn-in-Rygel: You are... mentally damaged!

My pick may just be:
Staanz: I am the female of the species. You know that, don't you?

Another slogan could be We Give Our Support To Farscape

AyuRocks
03-11-2003, 04:36 PM
Is there anything that we should include in it? Or just write what we want to say on our bra? I mean, she's probably too stupid to figure out WHY we're sending her bras.

Oh yeah, and I don't know about the plastic bag, just because that means I'll have to drop it off by myself, because usually my step dad makes the runs to the post office, and I doubt he'll want to go with a clear plastic bag with a bra inside. hehe...

Where are we shipping these off to?

Ashley

Tiriel
03-11-2003, 04:43 PM
OK, so from LA to NY it takes three business days using First Class and that will cost me a solid $2.50 (that's a ssuming a bra doesn't weigh more than 10 ounces... I have to admit, I have absolutely no idea... I don't usually weigh the little suckers! :D)

you can check here:
http://postcalc.usps.gov/

<SNERK> We Give Our Support To Farscape! I like that even better!

So let's call the entire action "Women Give Their Support to Farscape" (kinda as the title of the press-release).
And it would be great if in fact we all wrote the same thing :D ("What does this one say?")

And, yeah, I'll send something out on my local mailing list, but maybe we can also send something out through the SaveFarscape mailing list... that would reach the most people...

Love and Peace and Beautiful Bras :D

OK, another quick summary:

We're mailing:

What:
Bra, any Bra. Can be used, but must be clean :) On the bra write "We Send Our SUPPORT For Farscape!" and whatever else cheeky you can come up with ;) How about demographics? Oh, and please use either wireless bras or remove the wires before mailing... I dont know, but wireless bra sounds somehow all wrong to me... anyway, uisceboo pointed out that those wires could be a major problem for post-room people.

When:
So it gets to SciFi HQ in NYC on the 21st of March, the day 4.22 airs. (check here for how long it takes from where you live: http://postcalc.usps.gov/ the post-code in NYC is 10020)

Where:
Ms Bonnie Hammer, to make sure she gets a good and lasting visual impression (<snerk>) of the fact that women in fact are watching Farscape (and with a passion!)

How:
Put in clear PLASTIC bag, so it's obvious that this is not related to any terrorist-activity (... uhm, well, you know what I mean :D). Also put a sticker with "Watch Farscape SciFi Channel Fri 8pm" on the outside. We wanna keep our postoffice employees up to date :D And Breast-Cancer Awareness-stamps would be swell (the only ones I use anyway ;))

We'll have to also get together a press-relaese that tells our friend in the news-rooms this will be happening. Does anyone know of some show that would love to cover something like that?

Anything I'm missing? Except the obvious, like common sense?

Love and Peace and Laughter Is Healthy :)

Also....you MAY want to make a copy of the article from Time and highlight the women's part..the one where she says they want more women. That will at least give whomever has to open all these things the reason that we are sending bras...Right? They will all know it was brought upon them by themselves...

And I'm telling you...EVERY size..EVERY shape..EVERY style....let the bras show them how diverse we are! :D

Should we have a poll for those who have send bras? That way we can get an idea of the response Bonnie is getting. So once you have sent your bra just click on a poll saying you sent it, and we can count the number up. What do people think?

PrairieScaper
03-11-2003, 05:52 PM
A poll to get a bra count would be helpful, I think. Our numbers could not be so easily dismissed as with the '1 or 2 e-mails a week' comment from BH.

Yes, a highlighted copy of the offending article would clarify why BH is being inundated with our BH's (bust-holders in German slang, according to Tiriel :ewink: ). Good idea, Twich, will do. Oh, I want to mail my package tomorrow, but it's too soon! Must not jump the gun, must not jump the gun, must not jump the gun...

Operation Desert Sequel

Sci Fi Channel follows up its hit mini-series Dune, hoping to show that space sagas aren't just for geeks

By JAMES PONIEWOZIK
Monday, Mar. 17, 2003

A charismatic political leader cum messiah has unleashed a jihad. His minions have waged universal war and upset long-standing alliances. In the balance are power, religious freedom and control of the economy's most valuable resource. If it weren't for the giant worms and the hybrid men-fish carted around in big tanks, you might think you were watching the news.

The Sci Fi Channel's six-hour mini-series Children of Dune (March 16-18, 9 p.m. E.T.) is a sequel to the highly successful 2000 adaptation of Frank Herbert's novel Dune, but this version has a little extra timeliness. That said, Sci Fi would be just as happy if you simply tuned in for the giant worms and the men-fish. Children is the latest in a series of high-profile productions (including last year's 20-hour mini-if-you-can-call-it-that-series Taken) that have helped Sci Fi grow into a broad-based, Top 10 cable channel rather than an obscure haven for 30-year-old virgins who can name every actor who played Dr. Who

That change is the work of network president Bonnie Hammer, charged with "broadening" the fan base, which, not to put too fine a point on it, largely means: bring in women. Hammer dismisses the idea that "female sci-fi fan" is a contradiction in terms. "Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein," she notes. But the key to attracting women, and nongeek men, is emphasizing drama over technology, psychological drives over warp drives, fi over sci. "These viewers want things that have more emotional and ethical components," says Hammer. "They'll say, 'I'm not a sci-fi freak, but I loved The Sixth Sense.'"

The Dune saga made a good fit in that it's a space opera with a philosophical bent. Dune tells of the rise to power of Paul Atreides (Alec Newman), a young noble and psychic who is adopted by the Fremen, a nomadic warrior people, as their messiah. The Fremen have been exploited for centuries because their desert planet (Arrakis, or Dune) is the sole source of "spice," a substance that makes hyperspace travel possible, expands consciousness and extends life — it's oil, LSD and Botox all in one. (Spice is an excretion of Dune's giant sandworms, but people ingested weirder stuff for less benefit in the '60s.) Harnessing his powers and the Fremen's fanaticism, Paul leads a rebellion that makes him Emperor of the galaxy.

In Children, Paul — now both Emperor and god — realizes that the revolution he unleashed is out of his control, and he sets about trying to dismantle his own legacy. These themes and the environmental focus (the Fremen's new prosperity threatens the ecosystem on which their culture and spice depend) attracted co-star Susan Sarandon: "The idea of raping the environment for the profit of the few," she says, "and the idea of justifying a war in the name of some god."

Children is best enjoyed if one doesn't take it too seriously, though. (Sarandon plays a juicily over-the-top villainess, in a getup that makes her look like an evil B-52s singer.) You could write an encyclopedia detailing all the Tolkienesque mythology, invented religions and backstory behind the Dune novels — in fact, someone did — but the script does a good job of illustrating the action for the screen without getting bogged down in background. If you're a newcomer, you're better off ignoring the myriad guilds and secret societies at play and enjoying it more as a juicy religio-political soap opera, in which respect it is as satisfying as its predecessor (which Sci Fi is rerunning on March 16).

Still, Herbert was better with ideas than with dialogue, and that trait carries over here in such lines as "Nothing in this universe is as great as my love for you." And while Sarandon's wicked witch is campy in a good way, Daniela Amavia, as Paul's power-drunk sister, lacks emotional range; whether in moral turmoil or rage, she looks as if she is ticked off that someone messed up her mochaccino order. The true stars are the sumptuous-for-TV special effects and the Matrix-esque combat scenes. It's hard to get too earnest about any drama that includes the battle cry "Send men to summon worms!" but the message--"When religion and politics ride in the same cart, the whirlwind follows"--does resonate. If only the whirlwind were usually so picturesque.

I've got a sticker that says www.Watchfarscape.com Fridays at 8pm on SciFi and what else???? Am I missing something? Oh yah, gotta write on the loomas. <BEG> There! I think I'm ready to go. I'm sending this NEXT MONDAY, right? The 17th? or there abouts? Good! Now, to spread the word!

Hey -- I'm just a guy, reading this brainstorming session with amusement, but I have a few logistical suggestions to make. If you women really want to make an impact and coordinate the bra delivery, you should do one of two things: 1) You've got about 10 days - delegate 3 people - West Coast, Central and East Coast - to collect the brassieres and set it up so the regional coordinators all get their bras by the 18th or so. The regional coordinator can then put all of the bras in one BIG box and send them to Bonnie. 1a) As an alternate plan, you could just get together and purchase a gross of brassieres online and arrange for them to be delivered to SciFi on the 21st, but that would lack the personal touch (though that would be convenient for the New Yorkers...) - you wouldn't neccesarily have the handwritten messages and press clippings in with the bras... ; 2) You want to coordinate this flood of lingerie, so that some *corporate body* - The Farscape Webmaster's Assoc., The Viewer's Consortium, whatever, whomever, can issue a press-release announcing the event:"On March 21, 2003 the Aeryn Sun Society (or whatever) flooded the offices of the SciFi channel with thousand of brassieres embroidered with the legend "Women 4 Farscape! Frell yeah!". The protest was directed at SciiFi Network President Bonnie Hammer, who has been talking out of both sides of her mouth for many months about the lack of a female audience for the show, which she and the network cancelled 6 months ago..."

Once you can guarantee a delivery date - via USPS, FedEx or UPS, you can then leak the press release to UPI, Renay St. Miguel @ CNN, our friends at TV Guide, local NYC broadcasters, the Village Voice, the NY Times, Fox and any other media outlet you choose. In fact, I recommend that you use a private delivery service if only to guarantee that it get delivered en masse, and that SOMEBODY will have to sign for it.

I'm not trying to take control, just trying to provide some practical suggestions in order to maximize the effect. Given the 24/7 pre-war coverage I suspect the news bureaus would lap it up, much to SciFi and Bonnie's chagrin...

Darnit, why is it so hard for them to attract the "non-geek"? Don't they realize that everyone's a geek in their own way? Batman, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings (fantasy, but same idea), X-men -- these are the movies America comes out in droves to see. You don't have to be a geek to like sci fi, but the stigma is as always, "I guess it's okay as long as everybody else in the mainstream is doing it. So long as I'm not REALLY a nerd..."

I'd argue that the best way for SciFi to expand their audience is to focus their attention on destroying the 'mythos of the geek'. And why the hell not? They've already got lobbyists in DC looking for UFOs. Instead of shying away from the geek image, why don't they look, really look at the audience they do have, and redefine the geek, work on converting all those people who flip the channel when they see the saturn at the bottom of the page because "they're not sci-fi geeks".

Who knows. Maybe they tried this already. But they sure as hell didn't put as much oomf behind it as they did "Taken".

What we should tell them is that despite the fact we're sending underwear through the mail to get their frelling attention, we really are normal people ;)

okay, I LIKE the idea about setting up collection and coordinating deliveries, BUT, there's not a lotta time. So... how about this:

Everybody still goes ahead and mails their bras as originally planned

BUT we also arrange for a box or two of them to be delivered. That way it can be coordinated with a press release, but SciFi ALSO gets the benefit of the personal touch.

I think all of them coming in seperately from different parts of the world would make more of an impact then one big box of them...I mean anyone could go down to the thrift store and buy 50 bras at 10cents a wack.

O.k, of course I'm in. Ran off to look in my lingerie drawer and found an adorable pink bra w/a bit of frill and cute little blue flowers that I can't wear because it creates those "poppin' fresh" boob-ettes, also known as "quad boob effect". I also found another one I never wear because it's not comfy and if anyone can't afford to do this I will send it seperately in their name and/or demographic so they can be counted as well.

I like that idea. I agree with PrincessSierra we need the personal touch. Skiffy may attempt to claim only a few rabid leaders of the campaign are behind this movement. A few boxes should have an impact, but bras from individuals work for me also.

And I don't know how to post a poll so that people can vote when sending bras. I think we should have the option of voting for the number of bras individuals have sent, of if you are planning to send a bra. It would be great if someone could do a poll for that :aok:

Well-l. It would be short notice, however could relabel models that resemble Aeryn's sport top. In keeping with the holiday, how about referring to it as the "Aeryn-GO-Bra'gh". <snort>

Couldn't resist, Besides I'm Irish.

If still had bra box, could cut a postcard from it to send. Or even a cheap Erin-go-bragh St. Patrick's Day card with a Farscape message inside. If don't want to actually send a bra, couldn't we?

OMG! This thread was 3 pages, and went to 6 as I read! I agree with princesssierra, the personal touch is the way to go. I had a good idea, the bra is the key here.......but you don't have to send the real mc coy. You could always do a color photocopy of one, and send it that way! That way you avoid any package issues, and it just costs 37 cents! The actual bra would make for a real impact.

I have a 34 D leoprad one that I can sew ribbon on that's got " farscape or bust" and "women support farscape" this is too funny, LOL!!
So I gather we are to send these to Bonnie, and others asap.
I think this should be homework!!!

I'm gonna do it. I have two bras from the gap that don't stretch on the seam, so they create that wonderous four boob effect, which is oh-so-attractive.

For anyone who is interested in delivering in quantity, there is a service in NYC geared to the theatre industry called BraTenders. They will find any size/ style you specify, and order it for you. What I don't know right now is A) if they deliver (we have a shopper who gets them for us) and B) what their contact information is. I can get the answer to B at least by tomorrow, and will post that here. I'll also see if they deliver, but my fear is that they do not, in which case we may need to find some intrepid person to take lunch on the 21st and make an in person delivery to sciffy.

and I am grinning from ear to ear!!!!

Use fedex 2 day, if all going to the same destination they'll probably end up all on the same truck and arrive at the same time, no matter where they were sent from, and being flooded with FedEx boxes will be an attention getter as well. Its not really as expensive as you may think, I send things FedEx all the time. You can go to their website to find out more.

Regarding shipping items with no return addresss:

The USPS defines "Target Mail" as the following:

1) It must weigh more than 16oz (about the same as a full coke can),

2) It must be stamped, and

3) It must have no return address, or the return address listed is different from the address at which the item was picked up.

If all of these prerequisites are met, the USPS will not pick this item up from your house. If you are a known customer, they might, but it will not be allowed on the airplane. It will be shipped by truck, which could double the time it takes to get there.
To avoid your package being classified as "Target Mail", be sure to use a correct return address, if leaving the item in your box, or use a postage meter, or, take your item to a window clerk for processing.

Susana
03-11-2003, 08:55 PM
Umm, regarding FedEx, I don't think it's a good idea.

Why, you might ask?

Well, because UPS has been a big advertiser in Farscape, and if we're showing our support for our advertisers, we need to ship via UPS (and tell them we are doing it :)).

Shipscat, it really does seem to be a universal female experience that women wind up with a supply of rejects in the back of the underwear drawer, doesn't it? Ugh. I could've spent that money for FS instead!

I have more than one bra that I can contribute to this effort, and I've seen that others have posted offers to donate their extras to any women who do not have an ill-fitting reject bra to spare. Any suggestions on how to match up spares with women in need of a bra to mail before the 21st?

Perhaps we could use PM's to reach one another?

Eve11
03-11-2003, 09:44 PM
buggs: to reiterate and attempt to quantify this without sounding sexist:

The bra is kind of a symbol of femininity, and not in the same way a jock strap is a symbol of masculinity. Women burned bras in the 60s and 70s, celebrities sign bras and auction them off for breast cancer awareness and research. I really think that a similar male symbol (even though it's external) is more like a necktie than a jock strap. Not that I'm suggesting sending neckties.

Bras. And bras only. And that is that. Or else it gets scary, quickly. If this blossomed out to a "send Sci-fi your underwear/clothes" trend, I'd say nip it in the bud before ANYTHING gets sent!

I know there are some angry people out there, but this is not meant to be mean-spirited or weird.

It's a great idea, if everyone sticks to "the plan". I'd hate hate HATE to see it go sour!

03-11-2003, 09:50 PM
Exactly, Eve.

This whole thing is in response to several statements that Bonnie has made about SciFi's attempt to broaden the audience of the their channel by showing programming that women will watch. The point of sending in the bras is to show Bonnie and SciFi (and hopefully other networks if we get press) that Farscape comes with a kick ass demographic that they want. Women ages 18 + which, for once, Neilsons actually support. Go figure.

(all this time and I still don't know how the frell to spell it.)

stares with in awe trying to imagine a pile of almost 100 bras of all colour, shape and form, which, by all measures, has to be a pretty substantial pile of bra

I can imagine the utter disbelief on their faces. Until they find the first copy of the Times article (I think I might actually go and buy it so I can send it directly). All eyes turn to Ms Hammer as she slowly lowers her head until her face rests in her hands.

:rollin:

But hey! They're not leaving us a choice now are they?! They could have just read the demographics in the emails, but nooooo, they delete the emails! Well, delete this! :D

And guys! Your support is much appreciated! But I reckon this round we should stick with the women support story, because that's what the article was complaining about (oh, and The Times definitely needs to get a copy of the press-release so they can set their facts straight!). Of course that doesn't mean that there can't be a second wave of Men Standing Up For FarScape :D But Eve has a point. The bra has been a symbol of femininity (is that a word?!) in many different cases and here the "Support" part is just too funny to let it slip.

I'll check the FedEx site and see how expensive it is to send second day through them. We would cheat the mail-room guys for the spectacle but it would be easier to time... although I think that even normal mail, as long as it gets to NYC on the right day, should all be delievered together, I doubt they'd send a truck out to the same address multiple times...

Yo Jul! Thanks for the support! And we are more than happy to provide some entertainment at the end of a long and boring day :D :D :D Gawd, I've been giggling all day, this is really not helping my reputation!!

I'm so glad so many people have taken this idea to their bosom! lol yeah I was thinking bras only, guys. Male fans can definitely cheat and go buy one or snag their girlfriend's to participate. But we are responding to SciFi's proud claim of striving to produce television that attracts female viewers (right after killing a show that had an unusually high female following). The jock thing just wouldn't make any sense. (plus it gives me a tummy-ache.) What better way for a chivalrous male fan to show his total devotion to Farscape but by perusing the women's lingerie department for the perfect dainty lilac demi-bra and writing in his curliest cursive "Farscape or Bust" on it?? Now that's a real Scape-chisimo! Sure, you don't have boobs, but Bonnie doesn't know that.

You people have pulled me headlong out of depression today. I can't stop laughing! And people are offering DONOR BRAS for people that can't afford them! This is too much!

When I was in college, I shared a place with five other women aged 18 to 25. When we got home at the end of the day, we'd sit down, turn on Xena, reach under our shirts, take off the bras and FLING them across the room! This is bringing back wonderful memories of finding our bras under the counch...on the desk buried in papers...draped over the telephone....

I have a short blurb that will automatically appear on the Suite101.com site on the 20th (Plan ahead!). I may write up something fo the saneTV site, too.

As soon as there is a press realease .. .will there be one? ... Please send it to me. I am going to contact a Women's Studies expert friend of mine, and send the press release to the department at Purchase College. Why? These women/intructors are quite well known in their field: of special note, adjuct professor, performance artist and feminist, Holly Hughes. They have a killer email chain that will get the message to every feminist and anthropologist from here to Antarctica!

A quote from my Women's Studies friend: "Of course the press will love this! IT'S BRAS!"

Will you be sending it to Time magazine, since their article is what prompted this little escapade?

Susana,

i think Mr Poniewozik's comments deserve some fluffy lace based on the following statement from the article.

Children is the latest in a series of high-profile productions (including last year's 20-hour mini-if-you-can-call-it-that-series Taken) that have helped SciFi grow into a broad-based, Top 10 cable channel rather than an obscure haven for 30-year-old virgins who can name every actor who played Dr. Who. emphasis added

03-11-2003, 11:10 PM
okay, I am petite enough that my bra + the Time article fits in a standard sized envelope. Should I still send it in a plastic bag or can I just write "cloth enclosed" or some such on the envelope so they will still open it? What is their criteria for dangerous packages? Anybody know?

Aer you actually going to send them, then? It's a good way to show that there are loads of women out there that watch Farscape. I'd do it - there's just the fact that I live in England to consider!

i only found out on Monday that there aren't going to be any more series'. I was gutted, I can tell you! :bawl: And the last episode was so sad! I couldn't believe they ended it like that!

So I'm with you guys about making them run the last series, because we have to know what happens! :bounce:

I saw another msg that mentioned (since we're sending our "unmentionables" LOL) a nursing bra...I also have a couple of those from the golden olden days. I can also send to anyone who needs one, just PM me and I'll send it on its merry way to your door. (Since I'm in KY, it's pretty central to lots of folks! Okay gang...Sheesh..I was in on this from the beginning but DANG..it took me 30 minutes to get through all of this! You guys were busy after I went to bed last night!

So here's an idea.......help me out here.

If we all MAIL them on March 17th (Monday) then we have a couple of things...they are MAILED on St. Patty's day and I LOVE the Aeryn Go Bra-less theme. :D It works well....ALSO it would give us a chance to make a big push BEFORE 422 airs..and maybe get some press out there to highlight it. AND...the bras will have a good chance of making it there by March 21st...

I also DEFINITELY concur with NO UNDERWEAR going from anyone other than CLEAN bras. :) We are making an organized protest effort here because for some odd reason, they don't think women are watching. :) Well, we'll show them. Also, has MUCH more impact with bras coming from all over...from every different shape, size, color etc...it's much harder to dismiss a hundred or so (let's hope more) envelopes than just one big box. So definitely mail many rather than a group together. If there are two women in your home, mail two. I may mail three...cause there are three women in my house. (Okay...two are kids..but they both recognize Far-cape! LOL!)

So....what do you guys think about that?? Aeryn Go Braugh!!!!!! Woo hoo! I LOVE you guys! :D :D

Anyone have the guts to put a bra in a bag, with a note, and a label on the bag and take it to the post office, make sure they will send it?

It may be a good idea to take one over see what suggestions they have to ensure delivery - we do that for clients all the time.

IMO -- One thing about the mailing in a plastic bag - I think it may be important for people mailing from the post office to use a very large mailing label if they are using a clear bag for mailing.

The post office will read the label if possible with a machine and the machine needs the zipcode area have as much white space around it as possible, if it doesn't the package will be returned as undeliverable - so it may even be a good idea to put the bra in a bag, put your note on the bra, put a large sheet of white paper over the bra, put everything in the bag, then put a large mailing label on the side of the package with the white piece of paper.

My concern is if you are putting a letter or note in the bag, and that note is in the bag under the mailing label the machine at the PO may not be able to read the label.

It would just be a shame to find out the packages were not deliverable.

I had a thought last night and ignore me if this has been mentioned before. But, since we are sending in decent clean bras, and we are using Breast Cancer Awareness stamps, we could also include a little note that says something like 'Ms. Hammer, please donate to your local Salvation Army or Goodwill' or something like that so all of the perfectly good bras go for something good instead of just getting tossed in the trash.

Any thoughts? Dumb idea?

I have 2 suggestions for more press coverage:
1. Send the release BEFORE the packages arrive. Reporters may want to photograph the UPS or FEDEX truck or US mail delivery. 100 envelopes or boxes will require several trips or a dolly to get into the building. (i know they aren't heavy, but they will be awkward.)

2. As usual, I want maximum, uh, leverage and support from our actions. Bras are a rare commodity for homeless shelters .( u know, not donated much or already worn out ) How about attaching a message (and put in press release we suggested it) for Sci Fi to donate the bras to a DV or womens and childrens shelter?
"Farscape's fifth season is homeless. So are xxx women in NY. Please donate this to (name of shelters in NY)"
I can get the figures, name and POST them if it is an acceptable idea.
It would double our pleasure and may interest more press - who could tie it to charity things campaign has done. . The save our show campaign with a heart ... The Save Farscape campaign gives homeless a lift? PNFF got FS free publicity with a charitable action.

I would add, "Hi Bonnie, donate this to {name}, ONCE you get it through your stupid head that half of Farscape viewers are female" , but that wouldn't be as nice. Don't want to burn those rerun bridges.;)

How to get those great pics onto the (USED/OLD/TIRED?/WORN OUT/EXPENDABLE) bras ....

You're talking to a quilter here, so I have an idea to help those of us who are artistically challenged! It will cost a few dollars but hey, it's worth it! Plus you can get together with lots of your Farscape friends and split the cost, have a great time and help a worthy cause in the process ... (I'm considering a bra decorating party with wine cheese and lots of dips)

Firstly, you need Ink Jet , Laser Printer or Color Photocopy Transfer sheets (depends on what type of printer you have or if you're going to Kinkos)... Wal-Mart sells this product (made by HP I think) so does Jo-Anns and many quilt or craft stores and it costs about $8/packet of {6} 8" X 11" sheets. The sheets come with directions on how to get the best images and depending on the size you can get 4 regular photo size images onto each sheet - more if the images are smaller.

You pick the image/s or captions that you want to transfer to cloth (the bra that is offering its life for the greater good!) and cut them apart from the sheet. Using a hot iron and a press cloth (I use a tea towel) you transfer the image to cloth in about 30 seconds. This works best on 100% cotton but is also okay on synthetics ... just be careful with the iron's heat setting.

Instant Farscape full color images and captions.

And BTW you guys who suggested this are soooo bad ... that you're really, really good!!!:ewink:

Another suggestion, knowing Bonnie's perception trouble especially with numbers :grr: if you get a receipt for the postage, we can prove to the press how many people sent them. Bonnie might say, "oh, we got 2 or 3 of them, no big deal," if asked by the press about it.
You can mail them to me and I will add up # and amount spent, or we can use our poll to prove numbers.
She won't get away with a lie about this if I can help it!

:aok:I think this is a superb idea, in light of BH's comments in Time magazine. There definitely needs to be a press release sent out. Does anyone here regularly do this? If not, I'd be happy to write one.

I'd write some brief background info on the campaign and then point out that this latest strategy is to highlight the irony of BH's comments considering that SciFi just cancelled a popular show with enormous female demographics.

Since, I just became interested in the campaign a couple of months ago, it would be helpful if someone could direct me to historical info on the campaign and if someone can get me a list of addy's for the different news services.

Also, has anyone been designated the leader and/or contact person for the bra mail-in campaign?

Let me know.

PLEASE...let's DEFINITELY ask that the bras be sent to a homeless shelter. For those who have written on theirs, maybe sending another to donate is good. I think this is an INCREDIBLE suggestion that not only has merit for making BH realize we ARE watching and we ARE here..but it helps people too.

Also..those who are planning ANY press about this at all, make sure that EVERYONE knows we are requesting that the bras be given to charity BY SCI FI so they DON'T THROW THEM OUT. It is incredible press that we are doing this...and it is even bigger and more important that people know there is no maliciousness behind it (Well..not much) AND that we want it to go to to a good cause.

We support Farscape AND women..because we ARE women. :D

A few years back, they did a campaigne to gather bras for breast cancer awareness and they strung them across the Hudson River. It was great!! I think they would be interested in this- because of the breast cancer stamps- and maybe they would give Farscape some more publicity up here.
And post this on a few other Sci fi related bbs to invite others who may not regularly visit this site to join in.

Don't forget to add F/115 they are on the 115th floor!
Also Paint pens, and fabric paint really DO work well! I did a white lacy one with green paintpen, and metallic gold paint. I added some shamrocks for luck (hey I'm 1/2 Irish!).

No luck with the clear mailers. So, I made my own window envelope, in case a plastic bag isn't sufficient for sending through the mail.

I cut a manilla envelope so that it would open up and all sides would be flat. Then I cut a rectangle out of the center of the front panel with a razor blade (put a piece of cardboard down so you don't ruin your table). I took a large plastic heavy duty zip lock bag and cut out a piece big enough to tape over the window on the inside of the envelope. Then I taped the envelope back together. and secured the outside of the window with clear packing tape so that it can't be easily torn.

For those who want to decorate, but would like it to not be permanent for donation purposes, may you could get creative with paper and pen and then pin it with a safety pin to the appropriate looma holder.

Just wanted to put my $.02 in, even though I'm a guy and can't participate. I just LOVE this idea! :rollin:

Woah! Now this took really off :D Sometimes, when I wake up in the middle of the night, for no particular reason, in those lonely wee hours, sometimes even I get scared by our combined determination! But then I usually realize that I just have to use the bathroom and then all is well again :D But if this isn't going to give us a lot of press then I'll just have to go and forget everything I thought I knew about human nature and start from scratch :D

But what I really cannot believe is this: I'm out of disposable bras!!! Looks like before my last move I threw away any and all that didn't fit quite well or were uncomfortable... ah well, they'll get used later on (which I think is a FAN-FRELLING-TASTIC idea!) so it'll be more than worth to go and buy a nice one specifically for the occasion :)

I'll pass by my local Target tonight (they advertised) to get the bra and pop in the Staples (they advertised, too) next door to get the envelopes while I'm there. I'm sure I've seen them there.

And if i find any time at all, I'll try to design a little sticker with all the pertinent Farscape viewing information (including reruns) so people can just print it and put it on the envelope, too (to keep our mail-room friends informed :D).

Hell, this is gonna be good!

Oh and having see so many new handles:
:bounce: HELL YEAH!!! And WELCOME!!! to all the un-lurkers :D :bounce: :bounce:

btw: Even though I think the press-release should go out by Monday in the latest, I think we should still try to get all the bras in on the same day. I suggested the 21st because I would expect that to also be the day when the news will report on it (because they will probably want to get pix :D) and for the people with the short attention span it would be excellent if they get the plug on their local news and then just have to switch channel to have a look an hour or so later... does anyone has a different angle on this? Is there something I'm missing? Should we do it on Thursday instead?

Love and Peace and :bounce:

It's been suggested that we mail these on Monday the 17th right? To make sure they arrive by the 21st. Is that what you're asking?

PkTechSquirrel: Actually what I was thinking is that people check the USPS-site where you check how long it will take for First class delivery from your address to the 10020-zip in NYC :) I know from LA it's two days, so I would have to send on the 18th... uhm, I think... well, I reckon in that case most people will have to send on the 17th anyways... LOL! Never mind me, I just live here... :goof:

Love and Peace and Good Timing!

This is too cool! I'm in. I'm going to stop and buy one to send tonight. The homeless shelter idea is awesome!

Extra strength ziploc bags should work fine provided you fold over the opening and tape it down real good. If you put a piece of paper in the bag on one side with the address facing out that should give the postal machines enough white space. That's how magazines do it.

I posted this over on Kansas after a few people said they did not have the funds to send a bra. It got me thinking.
Tiriel, ladies what do you think of this?

If you can send a bra, please do. That sends the biggest message.

No one wants to feel left out, and we also need to stick to the theme. My suggestions to the extremely broke, and men as well:

First of all, a few women have offered "donor bras" which means they will write your info on a spare bra and send it in your name. Go browse the thread and see if you can (giggle) hook up with someone.

If that doesn't work (and this works for guys too):

Go to the post office, buy a postage-paid blank postcard, or buy/make a plain postcard and affix your own postage (see below). Address the front, and on the back, write your name and demographics, if you are a woman; if you are a man, write how many women are in your household.

THEN, draw a simple figure of a bra -- "b-d" and add the slogans "I Support Farscape" "Farscape or Bust." You can use stickers, or other images if you are not confident of your drawing abilities...or just do the "b-d" alphabet version. Keep it clean, don't be lewd -- this is about supporting our show, and the postal service will see what you send (fact, we WANT the postal workers to see our message!). And send it to Bonnie Hammer. simple impact, costs les than a dollar, but the impact is there.

I am going to also suggest that, in conjuction with this project, we all visit http://www.thebreastcancersite.com (http://www.thebreastcancersite.com) and click on the pink button every day; also go to http://breastcancer.care2.com/ (http://breastcancer.care2.com/) and click on that button. When you send your bra's and any correspondence for the next couple of weeks, ask the post office for breast cancer stamps (http://shop.usps.com/cgi-bin/vsbv/postal_store_non_ssl/display_products/productDetail.jsp?OID=1555262&BV_UseBVCookie=yes) to use, because they donate funds for breast cancer reseach fro the price of the stamps. Again, you spend very little money, but you will have done something huge in the name of good causes and Farscape.

Maybe we should start another thread so that anyone who needs someone to send in a bra for them can post and we all can pick a 'bra buddy'.
-Or the other way round would work. Anyone willing to send in an extra can post and anyone needing one sent for them can PM them.
Which ever is best. Just so we know we have everyone covered.:D

I understand the initial concern with mailing in underwires, but since they are in plastic bags and the contents can be seen, I don't see a problem sending them in with them intact. Maybe we should tape them to a piece of cardboard so that they don't frell up the sorters while going through the mail. Would that work?

If we send all those bras in "everyone will be" ... er :O umm ... uncovered? No?

BTW is this the fastest growing thread at this site or what? Trust us women folk to get things into high gear!

Maybe the underwires should stay on the new ones; any old ones where they are poking out already maybe should lose them. (I take 'em out and keep using the bras on weekends!)

Just remember -- NYC is terrorism-sensitive. Package carefully and thoughtfully.

I love the carboard idea, as the letter inside will stay nice, and the label can go on a flat surface.

Any other thoughts on underwires?

I thnk we should take them out of old ones.
Leave in the new(er) ones. They still do the job w/o them, and the recipients will still be grateful.

IMO.

Posible letter to Ms. Hammer:

Bonnie Hammer
The SciFi Channel
1230 Avenue of the Americas
New York, New York 10020-1513
Dear Ms. Hammer
It has come to my attention that over the last few months you have publicly stated your network’s inability to justify the expense of a fifth season for Farscape. I understand the economics of television production and I realize that the ratings are not what you imagined.
My question is this – Is this truly an indication of your shows value and viewership? I mean, do you account for the fact that Nielsen families, historically, do not truly represent the entire spectrum of viewers? I have done research into this fact, and have found that SciFi programs in general do not do well in Nielsen’s, especially those that are not on major networks.
In addition, you will find that Nielsen does not currently have a system to measure “Digital” Broadcasts. Since most cable systems are now broadcasting in digital, how can you be truly sure of your actual ratings? Moreover, what about those fans viewing Farscape via satellite?
I suggest that you and your staff seriously consider the true demographics of your viewers (read the Bulletin boards on your website, the numerous “Save Farscape” genre of sites all over the net, etc…). Take a long look at the good and faithful viewers you might be permanently alienating from your channel and decide if it is still “too expensive” to renew/revive Farscape

a panty hose cardboard that the new panyhose are wrapped around would be perfect to attach the bra too. Most of us should have some of those laying in our amoirs or drawers. :aok:

Hey fellow Scapers!!
Newbie talkin here
I found out about the fabulous bra idea from the BB at scifi.com, and I'm here to tell u all that I am sooo game.

If we were trying to keep this quiet I guess it's out of the bag now!
:eek4: If it's posted at Skiffy you can bet your underwires that they will know about it:mad:

I was intending to send mine Delivery Confirmation anyway. It's only about $1 (or so) extra and it's worth it.:D

Well my bra is too scribbled on to donate to anyone. I'm feeling pretty smart today with what I wrote in the inside of the cups, however.

Nah Selena, don't worry. The press is gonna know pretty soon anyway and I'm sure one of them would give Ms Hammer a call to find out more details. So she woulda found out before next Friday anyways.
I can't really see what they could possibly do, though. I mean particularly with us asking them to donate to a charity and sending that information to the press... they can't
