We might be able to get a clear message across to the Nielsen folks directly by emailing them with our support of Farscape. An address was given on the SciFi BB, but I discovered the correct one (at least the one that didn't kick back the email ) is:

info@nielsenmedia.com

While they don't have direct bearing on Farscape's return, it would let them know that their method of keeping track of viewers is outdated and unappreciated. Maybe if their box continues to fill, they'll help get the message across to Skiffy.

Actually, contacting Nielsen will do nothing productive for the campaign. They are stats computers, abeit their stats have been found to be inaccurate, but they won't report anything to SciFi.

Additionally, it won't help them get their people meter's out any quicker to help measure ratings better...

it would be better to continue writing to SciFi, UPN, Showtime, Viacom, Hallmark, etc...

This may be a coincidence or it may be a reaction to all of our e-mails. I got a phone call from someone representing the Nielsons today. They were taking a poll about what kind of shows my household watches and asked if I would be willing to participate in the ratings should the need arise in the future. They said they are trying to get a more accurate representation of viewers for different generes of tv programs. It was an out of the blue thing that kinda floored me...after I hung up, I was kicking myself for not starting a conversation about FS. Could they possibly be getting a clue that their ratings are sooooo wrong???

Pam, right during BraScape, I rcvd a call from the folks over at Neilson doing the survey thing. I did, however, bring up Farscape and the fact that my viewing habits were not reflected, as so many of ours weren't, due to most of us either get "our show" via digital cable or through some satellite network, and thus, due to "deflated" numbers, our show got cancelled. I asked the very patient young man to please pass the word up to his Powers That Be that we out there in digital land are getting tired of not being counted and therefore, watching our shows go down the tubes based on an antiquated system. He was quite the gentleman, and whether or not he forwarded the information, I'll never know, but I did at least give him the site addy here and he JUST might have tuned in to it to see what all the hoopla was about...(As he said that he had talked to a few fans already saying similar)...Who knows, they may just figure out eventually that they need to revamp DESPERATELY!!!

Hoping, beyond hope,
Ginnie

I've also been contacted by Neilsen recently and asked to participate. I think it's a random selection and it looks like it's aim will be limited to Sweeps week.

Too bad for the networks because I'll only be watching Farscape.
Hopefully my viewing habits don't mistakenly give props to the SciLie Channel.

I agree that telling them how out of date their system is will not help Farscape, but we just might be able to get a decent system in time to save other shows. Like ones that haven't even started yet.

Hey, you never know when a wonderful new show will sneak up on you and hit you on the back of the head.

Better put - Contacting Nielsen will do nothing productive - period!

I've written to them a number of times and they just don't care about individual opinions (they said as much in their reply) unless you happen to have one of their 'boxes'. Even then they don't want to know anything about you that might identify who you really are. They certainly don't want to hear that their ratings system is not as great as they would like to think it is or have others believe it is.

Don't waste your energy contacting them guys, your efforts are better employed in more creative directions as Jul suggested.

They would care about opiouns on their system , which in turn could effect future shows (as Astro599 said above).

This wont help farscape now, but it was part of the cause of farscape cancelation, and thus should be addressed.

Else farscape might get a few more eppisodes, only for it too be pulled again due to dodgy ratings.
