(the history books will all say it started with the chat, but there are a few of us who know the truth. it's all Jul's fault. if your friend ever sends you an email that says, "X-show just got the axe. Maybe we should get together with some other sites and start a small fan campaign", run screaming. trust me on this. but here's the version for the books. :D)

On Friday, 6 September 2002 at 9 PM Eastern, Farscape executive producer David Kemper, writer-producer Richard Manning, and series star Ben Browder appeared in an online chat hosted by the SCI FI Channel and announced that the network would not be honoring its earlier commitment to air a fifth season of Farscape.

By disclosing this information, the Farscape production team placed themselves in the position of scooping the SCI FI Channel in announcing the cancellation well before SCI FI planned on announcing it themselves. Kemper, Manning, and Browder appealed to fans to get the word out and somehow try to affect a change in the decision.

On Monday, 9 September, SCI FI was forced to release an official statement confirming the cancellation news. An anonymous SCI FI representative cited Farscape's inability to grow beyond its core fan base and the extreme and growing cost of production as the reasons for their decision. In other words, according to the SCI FI Channel, Farscape's current ratings did not justify its cost to the network, and they did not expect the ratings to improve. However, media-savvy supporters of the series have taken issue with these claims, as detailed in this .pdf file (http://www.watchfarscape.com/cancellation.pdf) (you must have adobe acrobat reader to see this file).

Campaign Goal: Reach out to new viewers and expand the fan base to a level that will make continued production of Farscape viable.

Campaign Start Date: September 6, 2002

SaveFarscape.com Staff: approximately 30 people

Approximate amount of money raised for various campaign funds: Over $100,000
(This does not include individual fan money spent on stamps, paper, ink, supplies, and merchandise for various projects.)
