Hi B Sharp and blue! I've been trying to get to FMD but, of course, I haven't been able to get there yet. Nice to see you both here.
Checking both your lists, and yours for the midnight showing, blue, I can tell you which ads I DO NOT recognize from previous episodes (I've kept an updated list of all advertisers from every ep in a Word document on my PC). Here are the new ads:
1st showing --
Dr Scholl's Gellin Insoles -- DONE
Dove all day moisturizing body wash -- DONE
Zest soap -- DONE
Jolly Rancher candy -- DONE
All fabric softener -- DONE
midnight showing --
bargain network -- DONE
ameriquest.com mortgages -- DONE
www.surefit.com slip covers -- DONE
Lamisil AT -- DONE
Rentway -- DONE
Smoke Away System -- ?
Allstate auto insurance -- DONE
These are the advertisers that still need contact info researched. All the others we have already posted for previous episodes. I will be compiling a master list for this ep from my Word list and adding these new advertisers as their info is found. If FMD is not up by the time it is completed, I will post it on this thread. Maybe I should anyway.
Whatever. Good to see you both again.
Later.
;)

Hey, how do we contact about the save farscape commercial? I'd like to write that advertiser to tell them I was watching! ;)
All I can say is-Holy Cow.
I couldn't get on to post that list Friday night (tried for hours)-or anytime Sat. or Sat night - So I finally posted in in Kansas in B Sharp's thread-

finally back on! I'll put my list here as soon as I cut /paste from Kansas.
Guess our commercial was *wildly* successful- welcome everyone new!!!
This is very OT, but after bouts of crying and laughing all Friday until 3am (and then Sat when trying to get on here...) I'm more hopeful than I have been for a while about what we're doing, and I hope really the reason that I couldn't get on until now is that the response was overwhelming for the servers.... I also hope we're doing a good job directing new folkis to how to help (haven't had a chance to look at the new info yet, note to self!), and that we're thinking about whether to repeat the ad, and how to pay for it., and...

Hi shaith- Thanks for the info! I took a wild guess that the best address for HQ is the Park Ave one- it's now in the edited first post.
Kerlin
03-23-2003, 02:25 PM
Out of random curiousity...will you be doing this for the midnight reruns? I realize that's a ridiculous amount of work, but it might be interesting to pick one advertiser a week who did a lot of spots during the midnight reruns and put them on a To Do list. If we're still having To Do lists. Which I think I should.
Possibly we would only need the contact information for ONE company if at the end of the M-F week we collate the information and find one advertiser who's done frequent commercials that week.
B Sharp
03-23-2003, 03:18 PM
Hi Kerlin- can't and won't speak for my compatriots, I would really hate to stop until the reruns start getting few/far between- so I did plan on doing advertising watching for the reruns, assuming I can get them all on my schedule. If blue and CosmicTheorist are up for it as well, we could probably divide up any new showings and cover them all if necessary.
The nice thing about the research done so far is that the likelihood of a new advertiser is much lower- and the "new" ones we do see are often from companies we know. Re the amount of work- it's not that much a hardship to have to watch :)
re picking one advertiser to focus on- I think that's a great idea- but I'd personally like to suggest a list of 3 companies, and then (even better) look for volunteers to figure out a unique way to approach them (like atlantagrls? effort on KFC). just my opinion...
as far as picking one or more to focus on- not a problem! We've got a lot of info, and it should be easy to find a good candidate. The responses thread and the MSWord 'db' setup already should help, although I'll admit I haven't done any updates to it myself (CT just told me about it).
blue? CT? what do you think? Shaith, would you like to help?
Kerlin
03-23-2003, 03:23 PM
I'd volunteer to help (way back when, I did the very first Kansas advertiser posting), if you want to split up nights. I am hoping to tape them so as to have a lending library copy, so looks like I'll be up and watching anyway ;).
CosmicTheorist
03-23-2003, 04:02 PM
I'm going to be taping the reruns, too. I've kept all the advertisers lists for all the past 10 eps stored in a Word document. Before the reruns start, I planned on making sure its all correct and up-to-date; then it could be posted here some place for permanent reference by everyone. Hopefully, that could make it much easier to keep track of the advertisers during the reruns.
I'm up for keepin' on keepin' on with this advertiser research. However y'all want to organize this or split duties is fine with me.
Isn't it time to get this thread tied up top and release last weeks list?
;)
Kerlin
03-23-2003, 04:05 PM
I have also been updating the advertiser lists on the Boston Scapers website...http://www.bostonscapers.com/projects.htm, the top item. Sometime soon I think I'm going to take Twich's Excel file of advertisers and make it absolutely complete with contact information, etc. for every single product/commercial.
B Sharp

I can't find any contact info for the Smoke Away System. There is a secure online ORDER site but no info on the company that makes it, except they are registered with the Better Business Bureau.

B Sharp
03-23-2003, 05:16 PM
I found something on them- looks like there are a number of claims against the company (the Council on Natural Health, Inc). Although I support anyone who wants to quit smoking, I'm not sure this is an advertiser I want to spend any energy on...
CosmicTheorist
03-23-2003, 06:38 PM
OK, B Sharp, I say we skip 'em. We don't have to post no stinkin' advertisers if we don't want to. So there.
That means we are FINISHED for this episode. All the advertisers have contact information in my post. You can go ahead and update your first post, hopefully, for the last time this week.
Good job, everybody!
;)
Ct and BSahrp-I just pmed you both--I don't think that guess about Novartis was right--check the pms.
As far as reruns--I'd do some of it for the reruns--not every single one, of course--
but I have another comment about the advertisers.
Kerlin suggests:
"it might be interesting to pick one advertiser a week who did a lot of spots during the midnight reruns and put them on a To Do list."
I think limiting it to one advertiser who does a lot of spots is not a good strategy. First of all, these spots were paid for and put in place a long time ago, and one that happens to appear more often than others may just result from it being a company with a bigger ad campaign who is blanketing all times and stations at the moment, not picking Farscape in particular, or even SciFi in particular.
You risk choosing a big company that really doesn't care if they get lots of mail from us or not, and wasting all our energy on one bad bet. Not every company will respond with more interest just because they get more letters. We need to spread our bets around, to have a chance of hitting the companies like Kia and KFC who are going to go the extra mile and contact networks on our behalf. I think we have a much better chance to do that if we write to many companies, not just one (which is an all or nothing bet). Some of the smaller or more family run companies might be more amenable than some of the giant billion dollar worldwide companies, but you never know, you may reach a particular person at ANY company who wants to respond (and you may not). I would strongly argue -don't limit it to one or two--especially not with the criteria of frequency. We have lots more people now, and will have still more--we have a much better chance to activate a few of these companies if they all get more mail than they expect on this subject.
Kerlin
03-24-2003, 05:43 AM
More than one is fine with me, I wasn't especially attached to the idea :). blue, are you suggesting that we try to ask people to target all the advertisers during a given week, just the repeat advertisers, or stick with what has been our strategy of contacting 3-4 each week? Whatever way works for me, I just think we should keep up the momentum of tracking and writing to advertisers.
No, its unreasonable to target more than 3 or 4 at a time up front, because people would feel overwhelmed--but it seems to me that we should also keep posting a link up front to the lists and encouraging people to also go to the longer lists to find one or two more of their choice (or as many as they want)--people will have different choices--like different cars or different places they eat or different products they tend to buy-and then all the advertisers will continue to get some letters, rather than only a few.
I am seeing some of these same ads all over the place--on WB, on UPN, etc, so I think many of the companies just blanket the airwaves with these ads--I just don't know if frequency means anything except big ad budgets.
Maybe we could rotate the three or four highlighted MORE than once a week, and cover more that way.
B Sharp
03-24-2003, 01:22 PM
OK, I think we're agreed on the general plan for reruns!
I'm going to post a new thread with dates and sign-ups for the reruns- I'll do the usual, and update the first post with the master plan as we get volunteers (and as my RL job permits....)

I'm posting the link to a pdf file that you all can download from AdvertisingAge's web site. It is a report of the 100 Leading National Advertisers in 2002. This report gives the product names, company addresses, marketing officials, all the good contact stuff. This file has helped me a lot these past 11 weeks. You should all get yourselves copies and use them for this next phase.
http://www.adage.com/images/random/lna2002.pdf
or
http://www.adage.com/news.cms?newsId=35021
or
http://www.adage.com/datacenter.cms
The first two links might not work for anyone else but me. To download the file I had to register with AdvertisingAge. The good news is that registration is free. The last link everyone can access; then just use the link for the Leading National Advertisers Report 2002. At this point you are asked to login or register. This report is WORTH getting as long as we are staying in the contact info business.
The only caveat with the material in this report that I have is this, before listing a name as the VP of Marketing, etc., it is best to do a search for the most recent press release that has their name listed in that position. I have posted the wrong person on 2 occasions because they were either promoted or retired. So even checking doesn't prevent mistakes, but it does minimize them.

These are available for both advertisers and prospective networks for the show along with links to demographics surveys that may be sent along. Especially usefull for those who can't or won't take the time to compose their own. We need every voice right now.

Please forgive me if this has been asked before, but could the lists of past advertisers be consolidated into one, easy-to-find list?
CosmicTheorist

I have not done so yet, however, I do have all the advertisers lists consolidated into one Word file ready to be edited into one easy to search alphabetically ordered list. I just don't know where to post it once its done.
First, I have to get it edited, then I will find a place for everyone to access it.

that in our letters to advertisers that we mention that Viacom is trying to purchase the Sci-Fi Channel or create one of their own and if possible, could the advertiser please call Viacom and tell them that they would support a new sci-fi channel with their company's advertising.
It would be one more way of encouraging Viacom to purchase a sci-fi channel or create their own.

Great idea Jadeshand.
And an update to AvengerCO's post (he's my husband, BTW) we ALL signed those letters. Yep, even our 5 year old. Now tell me *that* won't get someone's attention! And it was surely more than 20. My son thinks it was "a million!"
We're all ready to tape the eps and write down the advertisers. (Already signed up for Sundays and Wednesdays.) Plus, we'll target as many advertisers as we can afford too buy stamps for. (With my 26+ greating cards going out to 12 network execs each month, plus the new advertisers letters, I think I should just live at the post office!. And I'll be working unloading the mail as soon as they get off their frelling eemas and give me the call!...sorry, just really really need that job...)
