View Full Version : Fundraising Idea: The Cookbook Project Redux

Just taking a poll to see if people would be interested in another cookbook as a fundraiser.

There are a few options. Last time the books were available for $15 hardcopy (including shipping), there were also CDs and download PDFs.

What we'd like to know is, what would donate for?

A Completely New Edition - new, new, new recipes

Expanded First Edition - Keep the existing recipes and add new ones

Reprinting of Old Edition - I missed it last time, run the original book again

Cookbook, we don't need another frelling cookbook!

I missed it last time, so I'd be happy with anything!

Ditto, but I'd like to have some of the ones from the first one as well.

I'd love to see a re-print of the original and a supplement or new edition.

So are you gonna make a new cover for it? :ewink:

I'd love to! :P I had fun doing the first one - I don't even know if anyone noticed what I was "going for" with that picture --- it was sort of a Moya and Talyon type thing - you know the little mushroom and the big mushroom...I tried...:D

Cool cool cool! I love mycattoldme images, they are sooooo cool cool cool!

:joy::joy::joy::joy:

I have looked at that cover a lot over the months and I missed it! You're too subtle for me. I guess you need to drop an anvil on my head (or maybe Crichton's module). :D

Here's another option that isn't in the poll. How about reprinting the first edition as it was--there are many new people who didn't have a chance to get it and might want to, and also make another cookbook with all new recipes called Foodscape 2, or Son of Foodscape, or Foodscape Second Season, or More Foodscape, or something. That way there might be many people who want to buy both--leading to a higher fundraising possibility. (And that would leave room for further editions with all old editions still desirable to collect as well.)

blue, the cookbooks require an initial investment for printing that makes our being able to afford a reprint and a new edition very unlikely.

I already have 1st "What the Frell Is That?" cookbook...so I would like a new second edition with new receipes but I'm sure there would be lots of Scapers who would buy both!!! :aok:

Shipscat is right about the cost to re-print the entire first edition again - however I'm sure the PDF versions of the first book are available so anyone who wants the original Foodscape Cookbook can order the PDF version - take it to a local copy shop and have it printed and bound if the funds are not available to print both a new and old verison.

What is the initial investment for one vs two? Might it be possible to collect the money via a paypal account from those here and then also sell both copies for "pure profit" for fundraising? I bet people would donate to such a fund. What is the amount needed?

I'd buy both editions...I missed the first one somehow. But if you can't do a reprint of the first, then I vote for an expanded version of it, that way I could get some of the recipes I missed...

Let me give you a low-down on the cost. When we went for the second printing, the best we could do was 124 books for $650 or about $5.25 a book.

Shipping adds about $2 (this is hard to calculate because some order 1 book, some 2 and so on - but its a good average).

So expenses just to reprint and ship 124 books is like $900.

We don't exactly get $15 a book to offset expenses, some order 2 and we get $25, etc. If we did get $15 a book, thats $1860 in donations which is roughly double and nets the fund around $900.

Does that help?

Unless they are bad recipes, and then it's Foodscape 2:Tormented Space :).

Anywho, when i joined in December (I think, I'll find out as soon as I post ;)) the cookbook was already done. I got a second edition copy. Since that time, membership has doubled. I think there would be enough interest to print a new cookbook with new recipes, from all of us that weren't around to contribute to the first. Lava's a many splendored Cake, anyone?

Well, that's really $650 times 2 in costs for two different books, since you won't have shipping costs until people pay for what they are ordering, and that can come out of each payment. So, it would be about $1300 up front for two different editions. Dunno. Maybe there would be enough interest to come up with that amount????

i didnt even know there was a cookbook!

is that US shipping cos it would obvously be more for the UK

i would buy both and am willing to donate to an acount if thats what it takes to get this up and running.

If fifty people would pay in advance, then the $650 would be covered, including shipping for the first 50, and the rest could be sold for pure profit, minus shipping. What if there were a poll to count whether there are at least 50 who would be willing to order one or two different books and pay in advance?

We charged extra to ship overseas (the book has gone to UK, Netherlands, Australia, etc). I think it was $6 US extra last time.

And prepaying is an interesting idea, blue. Solves many problems

If interest continues to build for an expanded or new version, it will be awhile before that version of the cookbook could be available. (The only thing we can do now is reprint.)

What do y'all think should be in the new or expanded version? Same kind of book, just more? Regular scaper fan recipes. More funny "not real food" recipes. Add more stuff from season 4 (like "Lava's a Many Splendored Cake" :rollin:

I got the first cookbook and wouldn't mind buying a couple of reprints. Plus I'd love to see a new recipe book. I think adding fun tid bit again, the best quotes etc would be nice that covers anything from season 1 to season 4. I also wouldn't mind pre-ordering and sending "money" in beforehand. Its only April but the Holidays are never to far off to start getting gifts for people.

Good idea........more recipes, expand on the first edition. Maybe Foodscape: we are totally frelled?
I have a good brownie recipe......frosted with hazelnut frosting!

I wonder how many people chose #1 or #3 in the poll above who would have voted for both if it had been an option. I haven't voted for any since I think both would be better (but I already bought the first book). I still suggest a new poll to see if there might be 50 to prepay for each of 2, which would cover the upfront costs. I'd contribute recipes to the second one--and the first has the advantage of being already done.

I'd get both. Even though I did get a copy of the first edition, I think I want some more to give out as gifts, or to use as drawing prizes at Cons. But I also want a new edition with some more recipes.

OOOOH. I just thought to something. We could sell these at ScaperCon!! (You think??)

Y'all are making it tough. Can we do a write in on wanting both instead of redoing the poll altogether?

Having them at ScaperCon? Good idea. I think it depends on whether they'll allow you to give away cookbooks for donations at the fan table.

How much did the CDs themselves cost? If they were cheap, you could do a promo prepay thing. Like, for $20, you get a cookbook and a CD. After the prepay time limit is up, CDs are regular price again. That would get the money up with less people, and maybe get it going quicker.

akimbo
04-04-2003, 07:02 PM
The CDs themselves aren't expensive to make. Printing the cover art, printing the label and buying the jewel box are the most expensive parts (and the shipping material if you just wanted a CD). That's why we shipped them for $7.

We donated a bunch of the original CDs to the guerilla radio project, we could see if they still had them.

Generally not many people wanted the CD, especially if they donated for the hardcopy, it was usually either/or and overwhelmingly hardcopy.

Thanks for posting the poll by the way.

For me it would be best to reprint (with new recipies would be wonderful) because I missed the first round. However for those many who didn't, a new edition would be best... that or the old AND a new one??

My "vote"- print whatever, I'll buy it =)

if any of the people who voted here would also vote in the thread below:

http://www.watchfarscape.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=9093

then there might be a clearer idea of the economic feasibility of the reprint and/or new book.

The voting has pretty much stalled - so: Bump!

In any case I'll be opening a thread calling for recipes, so put your thinking caps on.
