View Full Version : What does your Nick mean?
grinner
04-02-2003, 01:52 PM
After wondering what some of your nicks mean, I have decide to ask this question... what does it mean.
Mine is grinner which is from the comic book GrimJack and it is a nickname of the main character... John Gaunt aka James Twilley.
LadyCrais is pretty self explanatory... while I have no clue what VBKatLou stands for. Just a question that has been bothering me for a little while.
Roland

That is why I use my real name!
Never understood the fun in strange nicks.
It's so unpersonal!
grinner

I don't know... my name is Phil, but I have been using grinner for 13 years now. I started using it on a comic board back in 1990 and just kept using it.
Kerlin
04-02-2003, 02:12 PM
Kerlin is the name of a persona I've written for for almost 5 years in a "Weyr" in Pern fandom (as in, Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern). She's been terrific fun to write and is actually more like Aeryn than she has any right to be...created before Farscape was even on the air ;).

Well, atleast I can say Grinner.
Some of the nicks is like ghryyytdsja ????!!!!
grinner
04-02-2003, 02:17 PM
Use the lower case g on my name... Grinner is a TradeMark of GrimJack... and was told not to use the capital G... I could use the lower case g. But it has been about 11 years since I had the problem... But it is grinner not Grinner. I don't know if it was a lawyer looking to make money but there was a lot of trouble on the comic book board about people using names of characters for their nicks that the board was shut down.
VBKatLou
04-02-2003, 02:39 PM
Well, my real name is Kathryn Louise, but I never get called that unless I've done something really really bad :finger:
The first time I tried to register on a board, I shortened it to KatLou but that nick was already taken. I had a Visual Basic book laying on my desk so I just stuck a 'VB' in front of it. Not very imaginative, but, as always, I was in a hurry.
BTW grinner - I'm still working on that list. I've added all the other ones too. I figure I may be done searching by 2006. :P
grinner
04-02-2003, 02:43 PM
Well, KatLou, as new shows get mentioned I am adding them to the list. I have probably edited it about 40 times now. The one that is on WDsection-table discussion is a little easier to read cause there isn't as many posts on the thread. But I have amended both lists.
Kyntio

My nick is a derivative of my real name Cinzia, which means "woman of Kynthos" in Greek. Cynthia was an epithet of the Greek moon goddess Artemis, given because Kynthos was the mountain on Delos on which she and her twin brother Apollo were born.
I just changed it slightly, probably because I'm used to nobody being able to pronounce my real name anyway. People call me tschintschia or djinza or other weird names.. It's very common in Italy though.

Well, grinner, you surprised me. I didn't think anyone remembered GrimJack anymore. I've got a pretty good run of them somewhere in my collection.
As for my nick, I seem to end up doing a lot of maintenance and production type work for a living. I use to work for several different amusements parks doing all sorts of maintenance work and repairs. DRDs seemed to fit when describing my worker type personality. The 2001 is a reference to 2001 A Space Odessey. So if there can be a DRD 1812, then I'd be DRD2001.

Don't remember GrimJack... Haven't you heard that John Ostrander has recovered the rights to GrimJack and the city of Cynosure? More than likely, starting this summer, there will be NEW issues of GrimJack. Tim Truman will be drawing it. So the story will finally continue. Some of you FarScape fans think that a 2 year hiatus from new episodes is bad... try 12 years. That is how long I have been waiting for new issues of GrimJack.
Of course I remember GrimJack. If you like hard boiled detective stories with a hint of science fiction and fantasy... this is the comic for you. I have 2 complete runs of the series. One is for reading... one is just because I needed a near-mint set. Grinner will live again...
Look at my Avatar... it is a Demon Knight Star.

I added the flame when I first saw this beating heart. My heart burns with a flaming desire, hence I added the flame. Sunderflame....pretty drad huh....:rollin:

MediaSavant was a nickname given to me at work by a colleague.
We all work in a media firm, but they all felt I was particularly "savant-like".
I can be very focussed when the topic is the media, but a bit absent-minded on other things.
It's a bit of an exaggeration, but I still thought it was funny.

Nick Danger Third Eye, I'm sorry but I spell my name Danger. Any takers?
Firesign Theatre, Nick Danger is one of thier most famous characters. I took on the Third Eye as a nick, in part due to my love of FST (very funny fellows) also, it seemed to fit with the Farscape board here, referencing Noranti's "third eye".

It looks like I stirred up some things for you grinner. Thanks for the news. I use to work for a comic shop and I've got a few friends who own their own shops, so I'll have to get them to add it to my list and keep an eye out for it. Truman's being back is great too. I really enjoyed his art work and style. That was Eclipse as the publisher, if I'm remembering right? There were so many good books out that all just sort of folded at the same time. I liked American Flagg too. The early stuff was Chaykin at his best. And yes, I've also got several sets of anything that I felt was really impressive.:)

This is John Ostrander's BB. Interesting stuff on it.
The publisher was First Comics out of Chicago Illinois. I use to hang out at the comic store that was around the corner from it. I met alot of the writers and artists for the company.
I have every comic book that First Comics ever put out. I was sad when Ballantine pulled out of Classics Illistrated leaving First Comics in a lurch and leading to the eventual Bankrupcy of the company.

My nic comes from my fav broadway show Phantom of the Opera. The phantom refers to himself as the opera ghost or OG. When I tried the nic like that it was already taken so I added the 666 which also is in the show. There is an auction in the beginning for the chandlier the Phantom dropped on the audiance. It was "Lot 666 - a chandlier in pieces". It was never meant as the devil's number...LOL. Then I added nj to that because I moved to NJ from The Big Easy to marry a man I met on the internet!!!:rollin:

Ok, now I feel old and brain-dead. But I do remember that there were some awesome artists and stories. I'm just hopeless without my CBG by me. Jon Sable was good and I really liked the Badger early on.
Thanks for the reminder. This is the time of year I do my regular inventory in preparation for the local comic book Heroes con. I've had 2 apartment floods and I am still working on getting my collection back in order. I'm still bummed over the loss of a Grendal 1 & 2 (b&w). Planning to get extra Farscape comics for friends while I'm there. (BTW after the 1st flood, all boxes were lifted off the floor in my closet, and the next pipe to break was in my closet again, spraying water from about 1 ft. over the books anyway. Talk about hard cheese):(

How many boxes of comics do you have? I have 39 boxes stuffed with about 250 books apiece. My insurance agent loved me when I came into the agency with about 5000 pictures of each and every one of them. All went into my file, but she was not happy with me.
Don't forget Mars, Nexus, Dreadstar, StarSlayer, and Zero Tolerance. First had some great books.
Sorry about the apartment. Must have been messy.

Oof, I'm at about the same, maybe a box or two less. Its hard to tell. You see, when the apt flooded, I discovered that mylars often have tiny pin holes in them. Those that didn't leak were exposed to extreme temps in a sealed bag and could have gotten condensation. Everything even remotely in touch with the water, whether damaged or not had to be opened to prevent condensation and I had to go through each one by one looking for damage for insurance. I have never had the time or space to resort them completely since, over a year ago. And yes, it was a nasty mess. I'm still organizing and fine tuning it. Needless to say, I moved very soon after.

My sympathy. A few years ago I had an offer that I shouldn't have refused on my collection. It was well within the low 6 figures... but I said no. That is filed under "What was I Thinking?" But, there is always hope that one day someone will come along and offer me way to much money for my collection... and this time I will say "HELL YEAH, TAKE THEM"

anangke is greek for need. It can also mean fate. I picked it because I was so afraid to have anything with any part of my real name thinking someone would track me down and kill me. So I picked one out of a mythology book I was reading at the time. And yes I went through all the "Big" names first and this was the first one I came to that wasn't taken. Since i've been using this one for 8 or 9 years now I don't feel comfortable using anything else.

I never really liked my real name. In grand Southern style, my parents gave me a boy's name, always used in conjunction with my middle name. (you know, like Billy Sue, Bobby Joe,.....) It gets me in trouble when I just sign my name, as strangers assume I'm a guy, then I feel horrible because I hate to put people at a disadvantage.......unless they're telemarketers.
So, I picked a girly name that came from Farscape.
And, now that I think about it, I kinda feel like Dorothy Gail sometimes, but then don't we all, sometimes? Not all of the time, just sometimes.

I had been meaning to ask this very same question for about a week now, but haven't been able to get to the bb long enough to do so!

<--- Another X-files reference. The Eves were creepy little brown-haired girls -- clones who were engineered to be geniuses and ended up being psychotic instead. There were ten Eves in the episode. I have an identical twin sister, we've got brown hair and we were creepy-like smart when we were little (although we have since grown out of it). And I'm a big X-files fan, hence Eve11. (And Eve12 when she feels like it, though she's not as much of an internet nerd and anyway likes the name "dannynoarms" referencing MST3K better)
talyn3
04-03-2003, 01:26 PM
I'm the third in the line of leviathan gunships, created after the high command saw the first talyn in action against the retrival squad. The PK imprisoned dozens of leviathans around a planet surronded by those PK satilites from LATP, removed their control collars, and got them pregnate. After the first few were distroyed when attemping to starburst, the rest of the ships succumbed to thier fate. Thus I was born into PK custody. Unlike the first talyn, I'm better armed, faster, but not as intelligante. Fearing the gunships ability for free-thought, the techs limited my mental ability, forcing my to rely more on my PK captain for orders.
(originally it was because talyn kicks ass and 3 is Dale Sr. number)

Well mine is obviously a play on Pk Tech Girl, one of the first episodes I ever saw. On the X-Files boards I was LiquidSky, but I kept getting weird messages about a movie that I've never seen...I used it because of a techno song from the early 90's. Anyway...I wanted a Farscapian name, but being angry on the day I signed up (just after cancellation), I couldn't think of anything more creative.

Thanks for the question! I always love explaining this! I am a Vikings fan because my family used to live in Minnesota and we moved to Wisconsin in 1990. Before we moved, I told my parents that I would never root for the Packers and I have lived that promise up to this day. I also am I season ticket owner and we live about five miles from the border with Minnesota, so I also figured that I would cheer for the team that I am closer to.
p.s. My dad is a Packers fan, but the rest of the family (including harveywhispers) cheer for the Vikings.

From Rhonda:
My old boss was a huge Vikings fan, we're talking Vikings mailbox, Vikings theme wet bar, Vikings clock in his office, Vikings "official" NFL jacket, Vinkings shower curtain and the whole nine yards and he would freak if we used a green pen for any reason. I'm amazed the grass at work wasn't spray painted purple.
Wow, Rhonda, I guess your boss really took that Viking thing seriously! I've seen a lot of Viking stuff, but the shower curtain is news to me. I really do like the Vikings.
OT, but my husband's brother and his wife, named Rhonda, live in Waukesha, WI. It's my brother-in-law's birthday today (well Friday). :bday: Paul!

Viking scaper, that’s cool. Glad you stuck with rooting for the Vikings. I am a fan of theirs, too, and the Twins, and especially the Wild. :bounce:
My best friend is a huge fan of the Vikes, kinda like Rhonda’s old boss. My friend’s thirteen-year-old daughter says she hates the Vikings and loves the Packers. I think she does it mostly to bug her mom!

Chaym
04-08-2003, 08:14 PM
First, it's pronounced "H-ay-m" and yes, is derived from the Hebrew "Chaim" but *not* pronounced like that. <sorry for being harsh, I still have flashbacks from this arguement I had with a friend over this and her insistance it be pronounced "the correct way."> Anyway...
Mine is the first name of the fictional character I've been using for 14 of the 16 years I've been in Starfleet: the International Star Trek Fan Association.
Full name is Chaym Gale' Re'ming'ton (n'Maldonado when I got married.) Chaym Gale' means "Life That Walks Alone." Chaym is lupo-felinoid. Think wolf-like face, cheeta-like body, prehensile tail, and can both walk/run on all fours or walk upright. Her planet is called Mohna in the Beta-Minataca system. In the "early years" of my ST fandom, I did tons of background for her and her homeworld. Culture, religion, rituals, government, history, sociological structure, clothing, music, food, housing, geology of the planet, etc. Plus tons of stuff on Chaym's native tribe, the ones her unique fur markings prove she's of, her family life, her search for her ancestors, how she was finally able to make it off planet, how she joined Starfleet, became a leader in holographic imagining technology, a leader in her field of Recreation (in my local chapter, I'm the Chief of Recreation), and a member of the famous heavy-metal band The Galatic Hussies, and cohost of the "Cooking with rRham & Chaym Show", etc.
My character was *never* used for RPG, just tons and tons of stories.
I'm sometimes also Chaym2 (because I frelled up my first time setting up a Yahoo account) and on the newly formed NewJerseyScapers yahoo group "chaymsavingfarscape" again, because of the frell up. (Oh, and also on that group, I'm H.E.Barnes - because it was my orginial profile nick and I accidently used it when posting my "welcome" letter.)
You can wake up now, I'm done.

I'll start emailing you some of my stories my dear! :ewink:
Wait, those are good. I know! I'll tell you all about my species rituals - like the dance we do that tells of how our world was created by the combining of Earth, Sea, Land, and Air. Then describe how the moons chase each other around our planet and the whole creation of our star system. (Yes, very much based on Native Americans.)
Perhaps, I'll describe in minute detail the colour system of our clothing. (Clothing is used for protection and to signify profession, not for modesty - we're covered in fur afterall.) Now there's some Z-reading for you!
Oh, or language. I could give you a primer and some translations. Now, would you want Current Mohnan or Old Tongue? Hmm, you don't have a tail, so teaching you spoken Mohnan would require some face to face work and you using a prosthecic or doing extra work with one of your arms. Mmmm, and your ears don't move independly either. Perhaps we should just stick to the written forms.
John's Girl you still awake now? ;)
How about some stories of our festivals and learning just how important bread is to our people? Would you like me to describe just how to make the many forms?
Now, have you see the map of our world? How about a detailed layout of a typical city? I've got a typical house layout too...

how everyone came up with their nicks.....
I've been using mine since.....um.....1995, when I signed up for my first Internet account and needed an email address. I couldn't just use my first name, it was taken. Then I realized the whole family would have to use it, cuz you could only get 1 email address way back then, so I needed something that would work for everyone, i.e. not be too feminine as I am the only female in the family. So I took the first initial in everyone's name n-j-a-k (I'm the "j").
So mostly I use it out of habit at this point, plus I have never, ever found it being used by anyone else, anywhere on the Internet. Lucky me.
I just wish I would slow down and think of something intelligent, relevent or funny instead of just automatically using it sometime.
Or I keep meaning to give it an Anne McCaffrey Dragonriders of Pern twist like "n'jak" or "j'nak" but I just keep forgetting.
Oh, well.....

Okay, my nick . . . I wrote some Farscape stories for myself and invented a new character (who's somehow surprisingly similar to me). When I had to choose a name I came up with the idea to use the letters from my first and last name and rearrange them. The result was Rue . . . (the last name doesn't matter here). The second part of my nick is, as you might guess, a shorter form of the word Scaper. I just wanted to show everyone how much fan I am.

Frunium Slip
05-24-2003, 07:47 PM
Well Froonium Rick was allready taken by Richard Manning, so I changed it a little. Besides Froonium was a little too cartoonish for my taste. Frunium with the U sounds more dangerous, you know like Plutonium, Uranium, etc. Then Frunium Rick would be too close to a ripoff, so I thought what goes with Frunium? Freudian-Frunium pretty close so WTF... Came up with Frunium Slip.
Besides it kinda of sings to me...
And the abreviation is FS same as Farscape, eh eh eh eh.
Frellster
05-25-2003, 12:41 AM
I have a different nick depending on the thrust of the board. This is a 'Scape board, hence Frellster. I just like how it sounds: "Frellster, Frellmiester, The Frellinator, how's it frell'in?" or something. Stop laughing, Harvey. Its not that bad.
To the former OG. You should read Gaston Leroux's Phantom of the Opera. Its much like the play, but at the end Erique (the Phantom) makes Christine choose between him & Raul. If she chooses him she's to turn a metal Grasshopper, and if she chooses Raul, a Scorpian. Ofcourse, turning the Grasshopper or the Scorpian also activate various mechanisms. I won't say what they do, in case you plan to read it, but its a lose, lose situation. Having to choose between the Grasshopper & the Scorpian is an unenviable position at best. Never cross the Phantom & never get engaged to two guys when one of them is a musical genius with a facial deformity.
I saw a guy once with a grasshopper tattoo on one side of his neck, and ofcourse I asked if he had a scorpian on the other. He looked at me weird. He had an ant on the opposite side. Yes, I suppose that works too.

Mercedes Lackey's Valdemar books are some of my favorites. There is a group of forest-dwelling people (mostly mages) called the Tyledras (sp?). "Ke'chara" is a word in their language meaning "beloved," or "dear one." It's also the name of a gryphon.
Usually kechara, ke'chara and ke_chara are taken, so I added the 420 because my birthday is April 20th.

I read a fair bit on Buddhism of late too.

asymmetric
07-08-2003, 12:31 AM
Used to go by "Quicksilver" back in the old old old BBS days, changed to "Nightfall" after reading a fantasy novel "The Legend of Nightfall" which was fairly ok, but the poem in the back really did it and gave a great if campy tagline -- "Darkness comes where Nightfall goes." Went by "The Spectre" for a little while, but I got older and more mature and that nickname was a bit too pompous for me.
IRC came around and both were too long, still are on many servers/networks. I figured "asymmetric" probably wasn't too popular and I was right, so I started using that one after a few years under some other nickname that I won't mention. ;)
Was still too long for IRC, but I've been using it everywhere else, like other online bbs/forums and IM clients, so I just shortened it to 'asym' for IRC, and sign my posts that way since it takes less typing. ;)
From www.dictionary.com / American Heritage dictionary:
1. Having no balance or symmetry.
From thesaurus.reference.com / dictionary.com thesaurus:
(those most relevant to my usage)
awry, cockeyed, deviating, devious, distorted, errant, kinky, meandering, screwy, skewed, warped
More describing my mental state than anything geometrically physical. Always looking for balance, for a center, for that ever elusive focus. Haven't found it yet.
If you want me to be cheeky, I can just say I'm a glutton for punishment and I love it when people don't notice/ignore my nickname in forums, or my usual "-asym" at the end of a message, and spell it assymetric. Yeah. I love that. Maybe I should head over to that "pet peeve" topic elsewhere in this forum. ;)

okies - mine started out as a high school nickname/joke.......we had to name our chemistry lab report onto the school's computer - so had to put a name that was more descriptive then TUMSLAB......so my lab partner put - shawnatums.....and she liked how it sounded so i became shawnatums....and she became nikkirolaids.....as my revenge.......
anyways - this was about the same time that i started chatting online and i really didn't ahve any other nickname......so rather than something random and unpronouncable - i choose shawnatums.....and it has been my Farscape boards nic for so long that i am afriad to change it cause no one would know who i was anymore (i'm not able to post frequently so many people barely recognize my name at all anymore.....)
otherwise my new sn is KytteKat.....an anime charecter my roomate drew based on me......
so that's me....
it's nice to know everyone's nick!!!!!

No real good story behind mine. When we were in college a group of friends got hooked on Maelstrom. The goal was to always be on top of the high score board, of course and one of the guys, Bill, try as he might could never get to the top. So the only time he made the top ten he put Lord Loser as his monniker.
I never forgot it and when I was fishing for a name to use on a football picks site, I tried it and have used it ever since. Besides, after my record on the football picks site it's more appropriate than ever.

trinamick
08-27-2003, 03:18 PM
Not a particularly interesting story - any who travel to Kansas already know. My name is Katrina, but most everyone in rl calls me Trina. When my nephew was little, he would always introduce everyone by their full name, but he somehow managed to screw it up every time (leave out letters, run words together, etc.) Since then it's just stuck with me. I used to use kats_meow, but anymore I can't without using a number behind it, and I hate doing that. So for now, I AM TRINAMICK THE MAGNIFICENT! (see the cape?) :tough:
Umbra

I think it was in February or March/scratch that... it was in June... during my weird news article binge, I posted 3 articles about cheese. One of them was that cheese was more addictive than Heroin... the other was about some smelly cheese... and I don't remember the third one. Once these articles were posted... especially on the cheese addiction thread... there was a very long and well... bizarre discussion about cheeses and other things. When things were being discussed that involved something wierd... cheese would be referenced... and someone would post who has the cheese. And the reply would be grinner took the cheese. I will attempt to find the article again... but I am not promising anything.

Well my nic is a misspelling of the odd madeup word from Cannial the Musical (more hilarious fun from try Parker, Matt Stone, and that other guy) I found out after I had been using it a while that I am spelling it wrong.
Other stuff:
My avatar is a pic of GIR from Jhonen Vasquez's Invader Zim. One of the best cartoons ever, up there with The Tick and the classic Pinky and The Brain.
My signature "Fear My TANSTAAFL Fu" is something I made up for my motto on www.everything2.com
TANSTAAFL = There Aint No Such Thing As A Free Lunch is from Robert A. Heinlen's The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress. It was a little used catch phrase in the sixties, but became widespead from the book. There is a TANSTAAFL Pub in Arlington TX but I've never been there.
A few months ago I changed my motto to "You deny me freshmaker?" as a nod to Jhonen Vasquez's Happy Noodle Boy.
And you all know the quote that is there.
Hey Sacarrn Raptor, nice to see another Zim fan on the board.

I only recently started posting (within the last two years) on different boards and haven't given too much thought to my screen names. At present I use several screen names because I like making up names.
I usually pick something related to farscape because most of the boards I frequent are Farscape.
For this one Harvey'schurl is for Harvey of course and churl was a mistake. It was suppose to be jirl. I didn't realize my mistake until it was too late.
I like some of my other board names better but don't feel like changing this one.

Anyway, who cares. I'm pretty sure it was season two, and it had something to do with Crichton wanting to do something really stupid, like returning to a world full of peacekeepers.
All of a sudden, Sparkie shouts out, you're not farbot. You're madre farbot. Of course we could argue about the spelling. Could it be madra, magra or maybe even madre? Hang on a mo. I've even seen it spelt as magra_harbot, and as for farbot, I've also seen it spelt as fahrbot. So, there you are; I can't even get my own fugging nickname right!

Judith
10-19-2003, 12:30 AM
My name is from Virginia Woolf's A Room of One's Own. In "Room", Woolf wonders why there have been, up to the time she wrote "Room", so few female novelists in the canon. She does a "what if" story...basically...What if Shakespeare had a sister and she had the same talent as him? She would not be taken seriously at that time...and the what if story ends with Judith Shakespare committing suicide.
Now, I am neither a genius, a repressed genius, nor suicidal, but when I signed up, I didn't want a Farscape derived name, because I knew that people on the board would know I love Farscape...otherwise, why would I sign up. So I wanted to share one of my other interests, and I choose Virginia Woolf.
Judith
10-19-2003, 12:35 AM
Oh...also in my humanities class in high school I fell in love with the paintings of the Bibilical Judith. Especially one by Artemesia Gentileschi....Grrr....You'd think since I love her so much I'd remember how to spell her last name. Anyway, since then, I've really liked the name Judith, so that was an extra bonus for me.

witchdoctor
11-24-2003, 12:40 PM
Well, long ago, around 1994 or 95, when I first had to come up with a screen name for AOL, I wanted something to do with Doctor Who, but DrWho, DocWho and all such variations were taken and I didn't want someone elses name with numbers on the end, so I came up with witchdoctor instead. Unfortunately, I had to abbreviate the spelling since at the time AOL only allowed ten characters per screen name. That means there is a witchdoctor at aol, but that is someone who picked that name long after I had my witchdoc screen name and after AOL increased the number of characters permitted in a screen name. I have used witchdoctor in postings and in computer RPG's since. The only problem with it is that on many boards, as often as not it has already been taken. So on Kansas I am originalwitchdoctor and on the Dom I am SpiritScaper.
Why witchdoctor? I am a physician. My first wife is a witch and I was involved a lot with the pagan community then, so I added witch to doctor. BTW, male or female, you are a witch. There are no warlocks; that was only on Bewitched and in a series of scifi/fantasy books. I don't really consider myself a witch though. Even then I never practiced the craft, I just liked hanging out with the witches. I have always liked people who were out of the mainstream, plus witches have better parties.:D If I had to choose a term now, it would be Man of Knowledge. That is from Castaneda's series of books. A Man of Knowledge was someone who could dwell either in the world of the sorceror or in the world of science, equally at home in both. My current wife is a christian, so I see a lot from the other side now, though I wouldn't consider myself a christian either.
