Neo Genesis is truly great.
Eta_carinae, you should give it a go... all the way thrue.
Cos it is a full circle only with the 2 movies at the end.
A thinker it is and a dreamy hearty peacefull play to.
Is got BIG robots but also a big heart. Im having a hard time describing my thoughts on EVA,thats cos it is so complex and layered.
Watch it all and see for ur self. :)

Yeah, I couldn't listen to it in English... Just wait until you meet Asuka... her English voice actor is REALLY annoying!

Ok I just watched the last episode of Paranoia Agent last night. Me and my Dad rented them from net flix and got to see the whole series without missing an episode. I gotta say that was a really wierd and freaky show! I think I am more confused than when i started. I love it though, even though i don't really understand it, i really and truly love it. I have my opinion of what exactly was going on, but i could be way off. Really wierd show though.
We just got done with the Ghost in the shell series too, obviously a great show. Now we are renting Samurai Champloo. My dad watches it on adult swim but i have never seen it, he really likes it.

I love that show! Right now I'm waiting for new episodes to start showing - I think in November. Rewatching the earlier ones is fun though :D
I made it up to the episode where there was an old man, a younger man, and a little girl who made a suicide pact in Paranoia Agent. At that point, I just really didn't understand what was going on :lol I'm glad you liked it though
Isn't it awesome you can rent so much anime through netflix? I  them

Yeah netflix is my new best friend. I love how you dont have to hurry to return the dvd and its not expensive!!! And there is so many anime shows you can rent, it is awesome.
But yeah that ep with the three people who wanted to die was wierd. That whole show didn't make any sense.

Has anybody seen Fruits Basket? Hee hee. I like it :) It's much girlier than most of the shows I've watched so far, but it's fun. And I love that the hottest guy around is a rat :aok:
I don't see Wolf's Rain on the list. Has it been mentioned? ( I haven't rerread all 18 pages!)
Chryse

I don't remember, but Wolf's Rain definitely should be on the list!
Great show, lovely art. :)
Haven't seen Fruits Basket... it's not really my taste.
But other shows to add to the list:
Samurai Gun
Samurai 7
Both are fairly new releases. I saw some eps from both and don't really like either one of them.
Samurai Gun is set back in the beginning of the Meiji Era, late 1860 -70. They are using period tech (locomotives, guns, etc plus a bit extra, slightly higher tech than they should have had) and a quite a bit of literary license to have a band of gov't spies/agents keep the peace and keep the highly varied and volatile rebels against the gov't in line. It's bloody, violent and sad. The art is interesting, but not really to my taste.
Samurai 7 is set in the future on another world. There are cyborgs, robots, aliens, and humans. It's based on Kurosawa's Seven Samurai movie. And I could feel him spinning in his grave as I watched the shows.... The story is basically the same, a group of samurai are hired to protect a farming village from maruaders. But it's just weird.
I've been watching Peacemaker Kurogane these days... It's historical fiction so it shouldn't be added to the list. I sorta keep expecting to see Kenshin show up though. LOL Fun series, I still have to watch the last disk. They make the Shinsengumi way too sympathetic and funny, even though the story is told from their pov. But the details seem to have quite a bit of historical accuracy.
Naruto should be added to the list. I've been watching it on Cartoon Network, but I have fan subs to ep 120, so I'm way ahead of the airings. Ninja show, but not on earth or Japan. It's an odd mix of technology and magic/chakra/chi abilities. Rather fun, but Cartoon Network really gutted it. I'm not sure how they are going to show a lot of future eps if they keep editing out the blood, not to mention the fan service, the dubbing/translation is pretty bad too. The fights get really intense. And Naruto is a pro at ending an ep at just the WRONG moment! It's a bit annoying... but I don't have to wait a week to see what will happen. :)

I have Samurai 7 in my netflix queue, but it's near the bottom so I have no idea when I'll get to it. Interestingly enough, I've got the Seven Samurai right now! I'm hoping we'll watch it tonight, we haven't had time since we got it and I've heard such great things about it.
And I think Wolf's Rain has been mentioned before. At least, I remember discussing it with somebody :)
ETA- found a thread about it here: wolf's rain (http://www.watchfarscape.com/forums/showthread.php?t=28302&highlight=wolf%27s+rain)

Seven Samurai is a spectacular film. It's considered the first modern action film. Akira Kurosawa is a god. And Toshiro Mifune is excellent in his role. I could go on and on about this movie.

We own a number of Kurosawa films on DVD. :D Yes, Kurosawa was a genius. It was a period film, so he insisted that everything be made in the style of the period. There were no iron nails in any of the buildings, for example. He would insist on everything being genuine, even if nobody watching the film would be able to tell the difference. It's one of the reasons Samurai 7 was so jarring, they are advertising it as based on Kurosawa's movie and it's really just the same plot. :(
I remember discussing Wolf's Rain too, but i couldn't remember if it was here or on Kansas/TerraFirma or somewhere else! LOL

Well, I finally finished the Eva series, all of the tv episodes anyway. And as with the endings of most anime, I am left with a definite sense of "I don't get it" :lol
I was suprised how philosophical it got. I put the two films in my netflx queue... don't know if they'll clear anything up or not, but figure I should give 'em a try
Chryse

The last ep of Eva was a surprise. The crew thought they had another half season worth of eps to make, but were told, rather last minute that they had only 1-2 eps to make before the series was officially over. So they had to cram in about 10 or so eps worth of stuff into 1 ep. :(
The movies help a bit, but they are depressing. The creator was pressured into making the last movie to explain the ending and said "Ok, but you won't like it" and lo and behold, not many people liked it. :lol
It's a very philosophical series.. What is the nature of humanity? Who am I? What am I? Where am I going? These are the questions Shinji asks himself and makes you think about them too.
There's a lot in the series that isn't well explained. I had to ask SO what was going on half the time and who WERE those people? all the time. He ended up doing a lot of research years ago when he first watched the series so he was able to tell me when I asked.
Anything you want explained now?

Anything you want explained now?
Well, yeah, actually. But I think I'll wait until I see the movies to see how much I can figure out on my own. My main questions pretty much regard Rei, and what the hell happened there with the "instrumentality" thing :freak2:

Here's a really cool thing I learned about Kurosawa's samurai films recently. It might have been from that show on IFC a while ago about spaghetti Westerns. We all know how Sergio Leone based his man-with-no-name films on Kurosawa's...well, it seems that Kurosawa had Westerns in mind when he made his films. So it all comes full circle. I thought that was so neat when I heard it.

I finished End of Evangelion. I think it explained a lot about the end of the anime, and I actually didn't think it was that bad. The end still left me a bit confused, but not nearly as bad as the end of the tv show.
I think I read somewhere that Anno Hideaki had experienced depression prior to making the series... and I can totally see it.

ooh, Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone complex.
We got the entire first season for Christmas and we have the first 2 discs of season 2 (also the first movie - we will probably have to get the second movie at some point). It's a wonderful, absolutely wonderful series. Definitely one of my all time faves. The Tachikomas rocks and Major Motoko Kusanagi is a wonderful female role.

Ok So this movie isn't sci-fi at all it is fantasy, and someone might have already mentioned it (i didnt read every post). But I just saw Princess Mononoke for the first time on tv last night. I was in awe of how great a story line and how wonderful the animation was. The story was so complex and the characters were cool. I was about to go to bed when i turned to the amc channel and they are doing a marathon on the director of the film. Anyone else like this movie?

Mononoke is a Hayao Miyazaki film, and Miyazaki is a god among men. I would watch anything the man made. Spirited Away is much better though (they showed it as well).

Yeah i havent seen that yet. but since seeing the movie i did yesterday i am awe-struck by the complexity of the story. Mr. Miyazaki is quite talented

How on earth have I missed this thread.... it's propably the sticky thing.
I don't watch that much anime these days, due to my lack of money or a working sound card.
But I have read a lot of Manga. My favourites are Battle Royale and AbenoBashi (wich I hear is an anime too)
I do have the first two Cowboy Bebop DVDs on my shelf.

what is Abenobashi about? I have heard that name before but havent seen anything on it.

It makes fun of every other Anime and Manga around.... Plus boobs... lots of Boobs.
And it's funny as hell.
I have a pic I took of one of the Manga's pages to show to my friend, but it contains nudity... so.. no go.

Oh yes! Mononoke Hime is one of my favorites :D I even have a picture of San and one of her brothers as the background on my cell phone.
I  Miyazaki films. Spirited Away is another one of my favorites. And I've been patiently waiting for Howl's Moving Castle to be released on DVD later this spring. Although, IMO, Howl isn't as good as the other two. But still, I really love his work

Me and my friend have been argueing. Does anyone think Wolf's Rain is scifi?
Hey, if all that, "use the force Luke" in Star Wars is Sci-fi then why not Wolf's Rein.
I just got Howls Moving Castle and I think it is very good. I would definatly recommend it to any anime fan. The animation is great, the plot is understandable and well scripted, voiced extreamly well by very talented actors.
I still need to find Princess Mononoke. It's amazing the number of times I've looked for that, just to be told that they "just sold the last copy in the store"! I guess sometimes I have bad timing too! LOL

Have you tried deepdiscountdvd.com? They usually carry Miyazaki stuff. In fact, I just looked, they have it for $17. You can always get that stuff on amazon too.
I've found that Best Buy usually carries a pretty decent selection of anime, if you prefer going to stores :D
