Hmpf...you can count me in........:)

and try tormented space www.tormentedspace.co.uk

Hmpf 01-21-2005 09:56 AM

Glad to hear, scrape_medic! Now we are three... possibly four, 'cause I know one German Scaper who may be coming. Still not exactly a Scaper army, but perhaps enough to do *something*. :-)

May I advise both you and norwegian_scaper to get your con membership soon? Nominations for the Hugos end at the beginning of March, and you need to give them some time to process your membership. I think Farscape may need every nomination it can get.

Also, it may be a good idea to look into accomodation very soon. If you're like me, that is, poor, you may want budget accomodation, and the best options (cheap *and* close to the con) for that are already out of beds. There's still the Eurohostel, with a dorm bed for 13.50 per night, though. That is probably where I will be staying, but it's rather far from the convention centre. :-( I'm going to book in the next few days, I think.

Hmpf 01-21-2005 09:57 AM

Oh, and could you perhaps post my appeal - or a link to it - to the TormentedSpace board? I'm really busy today and for the next few days with uni stuff...

It's tough getting volunteers. :( Hopefully, as the date approaches, more people speak up. ;) If you do find a handful to man the table at various times throughout the day, don't be surprised if a lot more Scapers than expected stop by the table. WorldCon has attendees from, well, all over the world. *g* The Boston Scapers did a table at last year's WorldCon (yay for FWA and Farops funding!), and we had Scapers from Canada, the west coast of the U.S., Israel, and South Africa (among other places) stop by the table. We drew the attention of people who weren't familiar with the show, too. We also found Scapers manning other tables (either fan tables or in the dealer room) when we took a walk around so supporting the other tables there is always a good idea whether or not you decide to have your own Farscape table presence.

You've got a little time yet to plan and drum up volunteers as the date approaches. Maybe even some UK Fargaters (is that the term everyone decided on?) will step up, too, and lend a hand. :)

Hmpf I feel your pain about lack of volunteers. I had to resort to bribery of sorts. But once the ball gets rolling and people see you are really suffering sometimes people at the con could possibly volunteer. At the last Toronto Trek a person with a new baby volunteered. I was stunned and I'm forever grateful.

Bandana Girl 01-21-2005 11:03 AM

Link with suggestions for world con if you can't afford to go. If it turns out you can't do a table Hmpf you could do some of these possible alternatives. Also if people email you saying they want to help, but can't volunteer at the table or attend Worldcon these could be some suggestions you could give. :D

I'm not sure I want to suffer that much, Bandana Girl! ;-) I'm pretty selfless when it comes to Farscape, but everything has limits... I'm spending about half a month's wage and a large part of this year's vacation time on the con, and much as I love Farscape, I'm *not* willing to spend the only WorldCon I'm going to be able to visit in a *decade* almost entirely at a campaign table. There's far too many interesting panels and stuff I want to catch going on there... But maybe we can have a table that's manned only part of the time each day or something. Or maybe we'll just make Farscape-themed t-shirts and badges for volunteers and walk around with a big bag of info material and swag each. *g* Anyway, the more volunteers the better, no matter what crazy plan we decide on. ;-)

Hmpf 01-21-2005 11:12 AM

Thanks! The pub night idea sounds great... definitely worth investigating. May even be an alternative to having a table - we could just distribute flyers at the con and talk to people, and invite them to the pub night to get introduced to the show!

Unfortunately I don't know anyone in Glasgow... but maybe the Scaping_the_UK list would deign to help with scouting out a suitable pub... ;-)

Bandana Girl 01-21-2005 11:14 AM

Would anyone have a copy of PKW to show? That could possibly be an enticement. Also I've realized room parties are so important (and fun).

Hmpf 01-21-2005 11:22 AM

Room parties may be a bit difficult, as I won't have a room. I'm staying in a dorm at the Eurohostel (yes, I'm *that* poor. ;-)) I realise they are important, but we would need a scaper with a room to host a room party... but the pub night might be an alternative, if properly advertised at the con. We'll see.

And I'll definitely take all my Farscape CDs and a laptop and speakers. *If* we have a room we can certainly look into getting a TV and DVD player, too, in which case I'd also bring my DVDs. I don't know if either scrape_medic or norwegian_scaper can afford to get a room in the 'party hotels' though.

Hmpf 01-21-2005 11:25 AM

It may be possible to find a non-active Scaper among the people who already *have* a room, though. I think there's an LJ community for WorldCon members - maybe I'll post something there and ask if anyone would volunteer their room for a Farscape room party.

Hmpf 01-25-2005 10:50 AM

Okay, sending my appeal through the announcements list worked; we've got a few more people now. Not too many, but enough to do something, I think. I'm going to look into booking a table tomorrow.

Since some of the volunteers aren't forum users and anyway the kind of discussion we may have to have sometime may get tedious for people not involved in the project, I've made a mailing list for us. It would probably be a good idea to join it if you want to volunteer. ;-)

Also, may I remind you that time is of the essence, especially if we want to get FS nominated for a Hugo? The deadline for that is at the beginning of March, and you probably need to give the WorldCon people some time to process your application. You can make your nomination via a form on the website, though, but only if you're already signed up, of course.
