Granted, Golan and Globus had their moments - 'Lifeforce' (1981) will always be one of my favorite films - but they had many, many other misses - the 'Breakin' films, their more recent 'Lambada' films, the 'Death Wish' franchise [Nºs 2-4], all those Chuck Norris films, and anything that stars BOTH Christopher Lambert AND Mario Van Peebles, and many of their Olivier Gruner ('VelocityTrap' good only for Alicia Coppola - no relation to Francis Ford,'Automatic', 'Universal Soldier', etc.) and early Van Damme flicks.

And did I mention 'Dirty Dancing'?

Ok - I think I'm done... for the moment.

this was actually a pretty decent film. Too bad that the director screwed over Olivier Gruner so he wouldn't appear in the sequels. Cyberpunk at its most noir-ish.

There are, of course exceptions. The odds are against Pyun et al., making as many films as they have, and that all of them be complete, money-losing stinkers.

In theory, they would have had to go out of business, before they were unable to make NO MONEY on any of their enterprises. And yes, 'Mean Guns' wasn't so bad, but it should have ended just a bit differently.

A question about 'Mean Guns': Is Ice-T an 'actor' in that film, or is his casting just a cynical stunt to get his rap-fans into the theaters to see the film?

Actually, that film is the only reason I've put Albert Pyun on my Tivo 'Wish List'. I've heard good things about it, but then maybe I just ought to see if I can get a $5.00 copy off of Ebay or something...

Nemesis is a gritty noir type of film that reminds me a bit of Blade Runner. Cyberpunk is a missing genre that has not really be explored very well in movies.

grinner, have you seen the Korean film 'Natural City'? It's billed as a Korean Blade Runner, but it owes a bit more to 'Ghost In the Shell', strangely enough. It's not a 'great' film, once you get past the subtitles, but it works alright, I suppose.

There's also 'Dead or Alive:Final' by Takashi Miike which is in the same league as the former - both I suppose started well enough, but got so eccentric that I lost interest after the first 1/2 hour, though I did tape them for later consumption.

But American production companies have tended to shy away from cyberpunk with the exception of the Matrix trilogy, '12 Monkeys', the awful 'Impostor' and the to-be-revisited 'Suspect Device'. Somehow, I suspect (sic) that Roger Corman bested director Gary Fleder and Dimension/Buena Vista/Disney on this one. If the Fleder pic had had any of the relative 'darkness' of Spielberg's last two cr@p sci-fi films, it would have been a better picture. But I suppose the budget for 'Impostor' made that all but impossible.

Oh well - another wasted opportunity from the House of Eisner...

Now this is a minor classic IMO. I will admit to having seen it about 20 times. Usiually as a double feature with Valley Girl.

Richard Gere.... ack! The only good thing I've seen him in was "Chicago". The worst movie, for me, was "First Knight". Gere was playing Lancelot as a Zen knight or something like that. It was horrible! John and I kept doing "Holy Grail" lines through it. The only reason we didn't walk out was because we were seeing it to get some time away from my parents during our Christmas visit.

"Star Trek: Generations" ranks pretty low on my list, too. Even worse than ST5, or "Star Bleck: The Motion Sickness". At least those two didn't kill Kirk!

Add in another vote for the horror that is Manos :vomit:

one major problem i had with The Sum of All Fears, being an armchair pilot myself;

the scene with the helicopter flying as the Thermonuclear bomb goes off rubs me the wrong way for many reasons;

1; nuclear explosions create an EMP (Electromagnetic pulse), unless the chopper had electronics shielded against EMP, which i doubt, as it wasn't a millitary aircraft, the electronics would have shut down, and the chopper would be forced into an autorotation landing
2; the pressure wave that tore off the tail rotor (if i remember the scene correctly) would have forced the chopper into an uncontrolled spin (assuming the same pressure wave wouldn't have affected the main rotor as well), the tail rotor's job is to stabilize the chopper and prevent it from going into an uncontrolled spin

a good example of an uncontrolled spin is in the infamous B movie "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes", there's a scene in the beginning of the movie where a helicopter pilot loses his tailrotor, the craft goes into an uncontrolled spin and crashes

3; the people in the chopper would have been exposed to massive amounts of ionizing radiation at the crash site, logically, Afflek's character should have died shortly after landing, or at least show signs of radiation sickness

i just remembered another bad aircraft-related scene in a different movie....

in ID4, when Air Force One is taking off and the fireball from the alien's superweapon is approaching the tail of AF1, one of two things should have happened;

1; the fire would have reduced the amount of oxygen being pulled into the engines, causing a reduction, if not total loss of power
2; heat rises, fire produces heat, as the fireball approached the tail of AF1, it would have lifted the tail of the aircraft, driving the nose of AF1 into the runway and causing a crash
