LIBRARY PROJECT: New Scapers 10 cents apiece?
Current Fund Total can be found Here
Paypal Donations taken Here It’s a cold and rainy day. There’s nothing better to do, so you decide to head to the library and see what’s kicking around on the shelves. As you saunter toward the DVD area, your heart skips a beat at the beloved gray and blue faces staring back at you from the shelf. Your friends are here. You can feel your heart racing as the woman next to you picks up the case and looks at the back, curiosity etched on her face. She glances at her companion. “You ever heard of this?” she asks. “Nope. Not a clue.” The man shakes his head. “It looks…weird.” She says with a hint of a smile. You fight the urge to scream that it’s the best Sci-Fi show ever and calmly step forward with a smile. It’s a groundbreaking moment. A new ‘Scaper is about to be born. People who go to the library are usually looking for something to challenge or entertain them. They are, in most cases, open to something other than their normal fare because it’s free and there’s more leniency to their schedule. Library patrons are by definition intelligent, literate people. Don’t they sound like ideal potential Scapers? The Farscape Library project wants to put Farscape DVDs in front of these people. Thanks to the efforts of a ‘Scaper with ties to the national library community, librarians from all over the country are coming to us. They want to place Farscape materials in their libraries. All we have to do is provide the resources. We have even had a library in Torrance CA (outside LA) contact us about putting together an entire program for the public based on Farscape. It seems they have one DVD (Premiere/I, E.T.) that is in heavy rotation. They can’t seem to keep it on the shelves. Can you imagine an entire program for the public based on Farscape? Taking advantage of the public library system means that a single DVD has a prospective audience of thousands. The librarians we have corresponded with say that the Farscape materials they have circulate very well. That means at the very least, hundreds of actual viewers for each and every single DVD. Want a cost analysis? The lowest price we’ve seen for BOS1 is $30.00. Let’s say three hundred people who have never seen Farscape watch that DVD, that would equal ten cents a viewer. That means a ten-dollar donation is worth one hundred new viewers. Don’t you think that’s worth it? There’s a page of our goals HERE so you can see what libraries we have on the list. Remember, many of them are coming to us and requesting materials. How can we ‘Scapers let them down??? Go check out the list today. So just to recap, public libraries. They want Farscape. Thousands of potential new ‘Scapers. We have an opening of epic proportions. We’ve not had anything like this in the course of the campaign. It’s time to share the love folks. Donate today! The original Library thead can be found here: http://www.watchfarscape.com/forums/...&threadid=9263

Library Project Update 5/18
Hey all!
The Library portion of the Special Projects Fund is at 697.27. This is incredible, enough to fill all the current library requests. We are in the process of making the final decisions on who we will be buying from and which libraries get what materials. I will definitely keep you all up to date when the materials are purchased and sent out (this is so exciting!! ). Once the librarian requests are filled we will start hunting down libraries and offering them materials. (much thanks to everyone who has sent me library contact information) I’m starting a new Main Library thread, the original is getting large and unwieldy. Thanks to Twich for coming up with the text. I’ll put in a link to the original for anyone who’s interested in reading the backstory Direct donations from scapers to libraries in no particular order: Boston Public Library (MA): the first 12 episodes on tape tape, AHR/Durka Returns, BTBW/Family on Tape and the Nerve/AHM on DVD. I did some snooping today and found that while there is no central/hub library for the LA County Public Library system, the library with the largest circulation is the Valencia Public Library. I'm not sure what to do from here, though.
I can talk to the Valencia AV librarian about donations, but I wanted to check with you first to find out what sort of thing I should be telling them. Also, what info do you need from them? Is it best to donate a bunch to a single, high-traffic library in a library system? Or would it be better to donate several different volumes to different libraries? Also, I spoke to the AV librarian at Torrance, and I'll be delivering volume 2.5 to him next week. He's very excited! He even said he wanted to try to get the rights to show episodes in their special viewing room on a projector screen! Sounds awesome! chemx

Yea, the Torrance library/librarian is awesome. Hopefully we'll be able to get the rest of the package together and over there in the next couple of weeks too.
The whole question of weather it is better to go deep (give a wide variety to a single big library with big circulation and ILL) or to go wide (give a lot of the same to a lot of different libraries) is a question that I've been debating ever since the project was conceived. I'm guessing a compromise of the two is probably the best way. Get BOS1 or Premire/I-ET on the shelves of a lot of different libraries to catch the eye of the casual browser, then have as much as possible available through the Inter-Library Loan system once they know to look for it. (Not a lot of help, I know)

I wanted to donate $5 bucks, why was my payment denied? Just wondering! Does it have to be $10? Cause I will happily donate $10 instead of $5.

Did you try to donate with a credit card? The SPF cannot accept credit card donations, so I am accepting them at mickie66er@yahoo.com
I will then paypal transfer the amount to the Library Fund

Library information for Washington County Library System:
The main library in the system (which is getting rebuilt into a huge 13,000+ sf beautiful library), is the Fayetteville Library. The mailing address is: Fayetteville Public Library 217 E Dickson Fayetteville, AR 72701 The phone is: 479-442-2242 fax: 479-442-5723 and email : fpl@fayettevillelibrary.org The library system covers all of Northwest Arkansas with 8 libraries, along with checkout priviliges at the University of Arkansas and Fayetteville Public Schools. Nearly 1 million items are checked out of the system every year, and the population of the area is close to 500,000. While it is not one of the top 20 Nielsen markets, it is a Nielsen Market (number 108), and I think it would be a good place to donate DVDs or Videos. Thanks edited to add: There are NO Farscape items in this library .

Or you could just buy a DVD and take it straight to your library like I did. The library I work at is now a proud owner of "The Best of Season One." (I double-checked with the people in the donations department before I bought it, though.)
