Shannon Doherty article
(found this on a news search)
Scripps Howard News Service August 06, 2003, Wednesday SECTION: ENTERTAINMENT HEADLINE: A more settled Doherty settles into 'Scare Tactics' SOURCE: Scripps Howard News Service BYLINE: TERRY MORROW BODY: Shannen Doherty is getting the last laugh, but she isn't enjoying it. "Scare Tactics," her extreme pranks series, is a hit despite the beating it took from critics when it debuted late last spring. After a summer of repeats, new episodes can now be seen at 10 p.m.(EDT) Friday on the Sci-Fi Channel. A second season will launch in the fall. "Do I feel validated now that it's a hit?" she asks. "No." Come again? "I can't feel validated because something is a hit because it can always go away the next day." And the 32-year-old actress knows about the here today-gone tomorrow lifestyle in Hollywood. She bolted from two hit shows - "Beverly Hills 90210" and "Charmed" - due to conflicts. Her reputation has been somewhat tarnished, she says. A drunk driving charge two years ago has only made her image matters worse. In another matter, she was ordered to attend anger management sessions. The world hasn't exactly been her oyster in recent times. She says time and newfound success have given her perspective. What means more to her is how she's getting along with everyone. On her last two series, she wasn't exactly known for being an all-out team player. "Yeah, we're a hit, and it feels good. Yes, the bosses at Sci-Fi likes me, and that makes me feel good," she says. "I am an ambitious girl, and when you work with me, I expect the best. I push for it." Doherty says she hasn't read the reviews of "Tactics," which was universally panned. "I only read the good reviews," the Memphis native says with a smile. "You know us Southern women. We avoid the bad news." Critics objected to the cruelty of the pranks in a post-9/11 world: Victims think they've been involved in a hit-and-run accident or accidentally killed someone with an experimental military device. One mark filed a lawsuit against the show after she thought aliens were trying to abduct her. Doherty says she thinks critics take the show too seriously. "If someone doesn't like it, they can change the channel," she says. "My job as an actress is to entertain the audience." If anything, Doherty sounds more confident than she did in an interview last spring, when she admitted she was adrift. Then, she said, "My fear is that I will not have accomplished what I am suppose to on this Earth. I definitely think we are all here for a reason. I don't think I know what mine is yet. It's like, 'Oh God, show me the way.' I want to do it now." Now, there are little signs of a diva attitude, at least the one that made scandal sheet headlines in the 1990s. Doherty says she's starting to enjoy her down time more. "Tactics" gives her the leeway to be choosier about her projects. She says she turned down three series offers this year and a role in "Scary Movie 3." The success of "Tactics" is allowing her to just say no a lot these days. But she admits it has not been easy. "You second guess about whether you said 'no' to the right project," she says. "It's scary making huge career decisions on your own. There are times when I second-guess myself. At 32, I've just gotten comfortable with myself. I'm not that girl who has to be a celebrity. I'm all about the work now." Not much reading then lately.... Quote:
This saddens me actually...because I can't imagine that doing what she does is what God wants of someone on earth. The show is cruel and that's all there is to it. It desensitizes people to those REAL LIFE situations where someone may have been injured in a car accident or killed in front of a friend. Not only that, it traumatizes it's victims. I wonder how many of them are happy with the fact that they were on the show. I can't actually believe that God would want her to lie and frighten people in such a way..and then make fun of them for it on national tv. *sigh*

Well, I can see how she could say that her job is to entertain people. That's fine by me. I suppose Roman emperors said the same thing as they were feeding their lions.
Fortunately, most actors/actresses don't take that mandate (to entertain or to provoke feeling) as a license to cause hurt to innocents.

"And then God spoke to Shannon, and God said, "I want you to do a show that scares the crap out of people while others stand around and laugh."
I can't wait to see what Shannon's God wants her to do next! Actually, I can't wait NOT to see it.

I can honestly say that I refuse to watch that show. But, in a day where reality tv is the SHIZ, what more can you expect from Sci Fi? It's not like there's much reality in Science Fiction. They can't say, "Why don't we make a show about a bunch of people stranded on the moon... But really get a bunch of people on the moon with a camera man! "Surviving the Moon" we'll call it!"
My Fiancé finds the show funny while I just find it mean. Hell, the actors of the show themselves end up getting beat on half the time. I'm still waiting to hear on the news that somebody had a heart attack on the show, you know? TV is just going to hell. Where's my Farscape?!

A perfect place for an early wash-up
Pity the girl.
When I saw she was going to host a show like that, I knew she was really washed up. What "actor" or "actress" is going to take a gig like that? Where does she go from here? Hosting "Blind Date"? She's already parodying herself at age 32. Shatner didn't start that until age 60 or so. Where is SHE gonna be in 28 years at this rate? |

Maybe she'll be the next host of Extreme Dating. That show is along the same line as Scare Tactics.
