Need help/input/PKW DVDs to scape Hugo voters! (Urgent)

Now that the deadline for new people to nominate PKW for a Hugo award has passed, our only chance to get Farscape some recognition at the Hugos is by scaping the people who are *already* signed up for the con. Worldcon is dominated by traditional SF fans, many of whom are organised in clubs and SF societies. I've noticed before that Farscape is not as well known among that crowd as it should be, so I think giving them an opportunity to check out PKW (and perhaps some other Farscape, as well), is probably a good idea. I'm not entirely sure how to do it, though. Contact every club or society by e-mail and tell them about the availability of FS at local libraries? (But in how many libraries is PKW already available?) Or offer to send them the DVD? (But where to get those DVDs?)

An additional problem is that time is running short. Voting is only possible until the first week of March, I think, so we should get this project off the ground real fast. But, I don't know how to proceed, so I need some input.

Rusty_Slinky has compiled this great list of SF clubs and societies that may come in handy:

Strategizing...Gotta love it!

I haven't looked at the compilation, and have little knowledge of the clubs/societies, but would it work to divy up the project geographically?

*goes to check the list*

Hhmpf...

I don't want to pull this thread away from you, but I decided to quote the club list over to this thread. Being that this is totally geographical, I don't see it being impossible to get at least one DVD to each group. The easiest route would probably direct donation by a local Scaper, followed by direct contact with the group. That would totally cut-down on the time issue, and would make it seem a heck of a lot less like they were getting spammed by Scapers.

Also, it might be great to have someone explain the prestige of a Hugo to the population at large. I would provide, but am in the dark myself....

The above considered, I will take care of getting a copy to each of the Minnesota groups!

About the Hugos: the Hugo awards are one of the most important - perhaps *the* most important - awards you can get in SF. Granted, they may have decreased in importance a bit in recent years, with the changing structures of fandom, but they're still pretty important, and it's a crying shame (and testament to the limited reach of Farscape in traditional SF fandom, which in itself is a crying shame) that Farscape has never won a Hugo before. They're awarded at the annual Worldcon, which still is a fairly important event in the science fiction world. (With 3000 to 6000 members per year it used to be the biggest con in the world, though nowadays it's been overtaken by the huge juggernaut that is Dragoncon. It still is the oldest con in the world, though, with a history reaching back to 1939, and the Hugo is probably the oldest science fiction award there is.) Entitled to nominate and vote are the year's Worldcon members as well as the previous year's. So, it's an award that's awarded by the fans, not by a board of critics or peers.

There's lots of info about it here: http://www.emcit.com/hugo_home.shtml

As well as here: http://www.interaction.worldcon.org.uk/hugo.htm

Star Trek: TNG and Babylon 5 have both won two Hugos; Buffy has won one.

Almost all of the above websites described their meetings as being open to the public. Some sites even state that they welcome newcomers interested in all forms of science fiction and fantasy. It can help to bring along a buddy, and some extra money for club dues or other activities.

The clubs that only deal with books, and the clubs that only deal with one show (ie Trek, LotR, etc.) were all omitted from the list.

It was interesting to learn that it's not really true what some say, about the literary types thinking that TV based Sci-Fi, and the people who watch it, are inferior in some way.

It's more accurate to say that literary types don't watch as much TV. So when a good episode of a TV show comes down the pipeline, they're not as likely to hear about it until after the broadcast is over and word-of-mouth gets back to them that "Hey, that was Good, did you see it?"

About TV mini-series like *Dune* or *Taken*. Usually enough appears in the written-media beforehand to get their attention.

Yes, exactly. And that is why we have to scape them!

Here's the summary for the efforts in the San Francisco Region:

Web searches revealed that the local Science Fiction club met in a restaurant down in the Southern part of the area. Also, an interesting quirk about this particular club was that it held periodic auctions to raise money for club activities.

So two copies of Peacekeeper Wars were brought along, along with an assortment of other Sci-Fi merchandise intended to be used for the Auction.

Basically, once they arrived, the scaper(s) paid membership dues and (like the other members there) ordered dinner in support of the host restaurant.

The scapers openly admitted that they were Farscape Fans, and that they "knew that Peacekeeper Wars was eligible for a Hugo". They also said they were there to make sure everyone at the club knew that the Peacekeeper Wars DVD was now available, and to provide a complimentary DVD to make sure that everyone (both voters, and nonvoters) who hadn't seen Peacekeeper Wars yet could easily do so.

The two DVD's were announced as being a gift from all the members here at FMD. One Peacekeeper Wars DVD was given to the club to circulate around. The other DVD was donated (with the other stuff) to the club auction, where the DVD was displayed where everyone could see it. The DVD ultimately auctioned off at a final price of around $7.50.

What was the meeting like? The members spent the evening eating dinner together, drinking beverages, and talking. Bascally people would take turns presenting a topic that interested them. After each presentation, the floor would be opened for round-table discussion.

Discussions included: the Worldcon preparations underway in Scotland, a book review, a local play, nightmarish travel tales, various movies, the cancellation of the TV show Enterprise, various permutations of Oreo Cookies, the new Battlestar Galactica, and (since the scapers were there) Peacekeeper Wars of course!

Most of the members there had already heard of Farscape, because at least one had watched Peacekeeper Wars and given a review at a previous meeting. But none of them knew yet that the PeaceKeeper Wars DVD was now available. Some had missed the mini-series. Some had not mentally-connected Peacekeeper Wars with a Hugo yet.

One of the neat things was that there was a jar placed on one of the middle tables there. A law exists there, that anyone cracking a joke had to pay a quarter for the privilege of breaking up the meeting. People brought in their spare change, and had a lot of fun trying to out-do each other's wisecracks and tossing their coins into the jar.

In summation, the club members there were all very welcoming, and made efforts to be inclusive. At the end of the evening, all (scapers) were warmly invited to return in the future.

Thank you for that report. Actually I'm going to Toronto. If I have time I will try and go to ameeting if they have on, but I don't want to go alone. If I can convince a friend I will try and do this.

The thing is I can't seem to find a date for these meetings. I will send an email.
