Taking the GRE
The GRE is what I need to get into grad school. I'm totally lost on where I do this, how I do this and when I do this. I know some of you went to grad school so I was wondering if you'd be so kind as to steer me in the correct direction. I'm entering my third year of undergrad right now...sigh.

The GRE (Graduate Record Exam) is a computer-based test that is given by the same people that gave the SAT. Last time I took it, it has all the sections of the SATs (verbal & quant) except that the math section doesn't have as much as the SAT did. I think, since I last took it, they've added a written section as well.
You can get more information on the test at the website http://www.gre.com like the SATs there is a general exam and subject specific exams as well.

you young whipper-snappers are lucky it's computer-based now.
if you studied what you were supposed to study in college, it's not that bad. tough and demanding, yes, but not unreasonable. or at least that's how it was back in the day. ![]() good luck, AS!

well as it turns out, i'm really jumping ahead here. i figured out that if i was to graduate in 2007, i would take the GRE in the fall of 2006 and apply for grad school in the spring to apply in the fall.
that is, if i were to graduate in 2007. |

I'm thankful I was able to forgo that and now my proven graduate record means that if I decided to get another degree, I wouldn't have to take it. While I did well at standardized tests, I can't stand them.
There are plenty of books on the test to help you figure out what to study. Not sure which are the good ones, though.

AS, research grad schools before you take the GREs. A lot of schools are doing away with the GREs. The school I'm going to (fingers crossed anyway) doesn't require them...at least not for a MA in English.

yeah i've got a list of schools that i want to apply to. problem is, i'm too ambitious and all the schools that i want to go to are 'very selective'. let's just say that harvard is on the list. but not for journalism. they don't have that program. if i were to consider harvard, it'd be for law or medical. for journalism, columbia, northwestern and unc chapel hill are the top of my list and those are supremely selective.

I kinda figured you'd go for those types of schools.
Good for you for being ambitious. You seem determined enough to make it happen. I'm sure all of those schools will require the GREs. Try and find a prep course for them if you can. That may help.

haha You've had that taste of freedom and you're not giving it up, eh?
That's cool though. Did you look into NYU? They have some sort of specially tailored to suit you program. I think the Olsen kids are doing it.

yeah i was looking at NYU too. i've got a few brochures from NYU, northwestern and columbia coming my way.
haha, you bet i want my freedom! i go to school like 4 hours away and i'm not giving up the freedom of goin where i want to on my own. too bad UVA doesn't have a journalism program. do you know of any grad schools that do double degree? like, if i wanted to do degrees in journalism and law? i think NYU does, or northwestern. i was considering going into Law also but I didn't like that i would have to choose one. I think it'd be nice to pull double duty and try for both degrees. |
