End of BSG

Just read that SciFi and the producers of the show are going to wrap the series up this year, ending it with "a bang."

this is a good article about the ending and what the producers want from the show:

i actually prefer it when it's done like this. of course, they don't always get the opportunity, but i think this gives the final season a really good chance of finding the season one/early season two something that's been missing from season three. here's hoping.

it's true that when a series has control over its' own destiny, that usually it's a better viewing experience than abruptly cutting it off. but, the thing that's sad is that there's so little good SF on TV that losing (even if it's a year from now when it's actually done) a show the quality of BSG is a dark day for SF fans.

however, that said, at least it was on and at least it helped ease the pain of losing Farscape. i remember watching the pilot while i was stuck in Detroit. there was nothing else on and i thought, this cannot be good. and shit, if it wasn't great! i then, because i was still bored out of my mind, watched the repeats. and when i found out it was being made into a show, i couldn't believe it.

the great thing about BSG is that while it was great, it was a completely different great than Farscape. the look, the feel, the characters, a totally different model of a show. it was like, my sportscar got stolen and with the insurance money, i'm going to get an SUV and go 4 wheeling. fun, but in a a completely different way.

but, i anxiously await the next season. and i'm sure i'll get the dvd's of this one.

Good,
I for one will be glad to see the back of that series

my only next hope is that someday Bonnie Hammer grows a brain and decides to cancell wrestling, bsg, painkiller jyne
and support more firefly/Farscape.

Why Bonnie has decide to back one of the lowest rated series on tv we may never really know.

Many original series fans didn't like the new series, few African-Americans and other ethnic characters. TOS fans didn't like new characters, one played by Drik Benedict replaced by a cranky moody character played by Sackhoff. The drunken XO or the general dark moody feeling to the show, the wanted a continuation of disco planets and lizard aliens not a moody Sackhoff and a drunken Tigh.

But many of us scifi fans gave the series a chance and the first season and the first movie were showed us some great scifi
it proved to many critics what great potential the series had.

But the magic didn't last very long. A lot of people had feelings of utter shock at how the series changed in the latter of of s2 and into season 3 and many loyals fans became disgusted with the direction the show was going. The season finale was incredibly stupid. Not only did it fulfill on the return of Starbuck, and continue to fall back by ripping ideas from the old Larson script, they also bored us with a Springer soap opera and it was painfully obvious was going to happen.

The new-BSG series is dead, they should put it out of its misery now instead of watching it go through the slow seppuku ritual

I won't say any more on the series because whenever I criticize the series, waltersgirl who is a big crazy fangirl makes threats to have me banned.

All I will say is that I'm not alone in my criticism as there are dozens of people on this website ( Beo, OssinMcCool, Reddingo, DRD2001, RustySlinky, crichton_iasa.....), and millions of viewers who feel the same.

BSG is mostly crap now, a very mediocre show which was once tipped to become something great.

I agree that it is better to end like this.
I'm not happy to see it go, but at least I gain an hour each week to do something other than watch tv.
Maybe I'll drink rum.

It took me a while to warm to the new BSG, but now its one of my favorite shows which I will miss. But it is better to cancel arc driven shows such as BSG and Farscape within 5 seasons or it will get tired and old. As much as it killed me when Farscape was cut after the fourth season, if you think about it, the cancellation cemented Farscape in its prime. Sort of like if James Dean and Marylin Monroe lived a long life and became old actors, they would not have the legengary iconic status they do have now. By cancelling shows such as Farscape and BSG within the 4-5 season timeframe, they will never get old...they will always be prime-time heavy hitter shows that never got repetitive and were never went over the hill. Immortal they are.

What were the Nielsen ratings for the season finale ?
you know the episode with the bob dylan radio where everyone is a cylon and kara thrace does a return from the living dead ?

Many of us were unsure about the new series, we found it un-original, didn't know about a woman starbuck and found it too dark but we gave the series a second chance and it did have a few very good episodes. However the storyline became a trainwreck and fans started to tune out but posters like waltersgirl and AdamLGarcia are now trying to save face by saying every episode is still great and the show is as golden as ever.

I think Eick (Xena) and Ron D.Moore (StarTrek) are good at telling shorter story arcs, when they tried to push the series beyond the 13 episode story of the first season which some old school fans say were ripped from Glen Larson and Bryan Singer's source material. The later episodes seemed too long, it got packed with filler material and we discovered the re-imagined Cylons never really had a plan, if you like poorly written scifi with trainwreck soap opera plots then BSG si the show for you.

I saw Aaron Douglas (Chief Tyrol) this past weekend at Shore Leave. He says that HE thinks that the series will end with them getting to "Earth", and who comes out to greet them but thousands of Leobens, Cavils, D'Anna's, Gina/Sixes, Sharons, etc. The planet has been taken over by Cylons - or is the Cylon homeworld.

IMHO, I think that the Fleet should find Earth, discover that it's overcrowded, the CO2 levels are rising causing Global Warming, we're still fighting over monotheistic religions and ethnic differences, and we don't like "aliens". Roslin turns to Adama and says, "next planet?"

Or "Oh no, it's a whole world full of Season 3 crap. Pass me the camalla root Bill, and send those worker classes back down to check the air filters. And think of new ways to sort out those cylons and their pesky God".

Some news about upcoming films/DVDs:

(Possible spoilers)

Quote:
Trade publication Home Media Magazine is reporting that the 4th (and final) season of Battlestar Galactica will premier in January, but that a "prequel" of sorts will precede it, both on the SciFi Channel and on DVD. Razor will air on November 24th, and the DVD will release just a few weeks later (exact date is still to be announced), and features the return of Michelle Forbes (Star Trek: TNG's Ensign Ro) as "Admiral Cain", leading the Battlestar Pegasus in a standalone "two-part episode". This actually goes back and tells us the history of the Pegasus, and "covers a span of about 50 years, and two wars between the humans and the robotic Cylons". That quote from Home Media Magazine contains info which they attribute to coming from Ronald D. Moore, the show's Executive Producer.

In addition to Forbes, the regular cast of Galactica is slated to appear in Razor, which will reportedly feature an additional treat: ORIGINAL Cylon centurions! Yes, the silver-plated robots with the red eye that roves back-and-forth will show up, as will the original Cylon "raider" 3-seater ships that were seen in the original late '70s series.

The DVD is said to contain the full-length version of Battlestar Galactica - Razor, including scenes that won't air on the SciFi Channel. The trade mag's story, written by John Latchem and Billy Gil, emphasizes that Razor does not resolve any cliffhangers from the 3rd season (but does give background info that the fans may use to enhance their enjoyment of the 4th season).
